BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Tuesday underscored the role of science and technology in promoting the country's sustainable development and weathering the global downturn. Addressing the science and technology community in Beijing, Wen said China should be built into an innovation-oriented country and neo-strategic industries should become the leading force in promoting the social and economic development.     He called on scientists to boost research in such neo-strategic industries as the new energy industry, information networking industry, micro-electronics and nanotechnology, life science as well space and ocean exploration. SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday called on the Chinese and U.S. governments to strengthen cooperation in dealing with such global challenges as climate change.     "There are very few global challenges that can be solved unless China and the United States agree," he stressed while answering a question at a town hall with Chinese students in Shanghai, the first stop of his four-day China tour.     As the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters, the United States and China should assume the responsibility to curb greenhouse gas emissions, he said.     "Unless both of our countries are willing to take critical steps in dealing with this issue, we will not be able to resolve it," Obama said.     The president called on world leaders to strike a deal at the December Copenhagen conference during which they would make differentiated commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.     China should not take the same obligations as the United States since it has a much larger population living in poverty, he said.     Climate change is expected to be one of the main topics at the upcoming meeting between Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao.     President Hu promised at a September UN climate summit in New York that China would cut carbon dioxide emissions per unit of gross domestic product by "a notable margin" by 2020 from the 2005level.     Obama has said he wants to cut U.S. emissions back to 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 percent further by 2050, but the U.S. Congress was unlikely to complete climate legislation by the time of Copenhagen, due to great political challenges in the midst of a recession with high unemployment and other domestic priorities.     According to U.S. top negotiator Jonathan Pershing, it would be difficult for the U.S. to pledge an emissions target without legislation by Congress, therefore a new pact to combat global warming is a forlorn hope for Copenhagen.     The Dec. 7-18 Copenhagen meeting, which is expected to bring together leaders from 190 countries, aims to renew greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set by the Kyoto Protocol, due to expire in 2012. 

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama had a taste of Chinese history on Wednesday by visiting the country's most iconic site, the Great Wall.     "It's magical," Obama said when walking along the Great Wall in chilly winter wind. "It reminds you of the sweep of history and our time here on earth is not that long. We better make the best of it."     Dressed in a dark winter jacket, a smiling Obama broke away from companions and walked alone along the ramp.     "I brought back the admiration for the Chinese civilization, I bring here the greetings of American People," Obama said when ascending a watchtower to enjoy a distant view at the Badaling section of the Great Wall.     Obama is the fifth U.S. president to visit the manmade wonder. Former U.S. President Richard Nixon visited the Great Wall in 1972,Ronald Reagan in 1984 and Bill Clinton in 1998. In 2002, former U.S. President George W. Bush and his wife Laura toured the same section as Obama did.     "I'm inspired by the majesty of the Great Wall and am grateful for the warmth of the Chinese people," Obama wrote on the visitor's book after his half-hour tour.     The Great Wall was the second sightseeing program for Obama during his visit to China. He toured the Imperial Palace Tuesday after nearly two hours of talks with President Hu Jintao.     Built originally as the biggest defense work in ancient China, the Great Wall today has become one of the must-see places for visiting foreign leaders to the country in the past six decades.     The Badaling section, which is in the northwestern suburb of Beijing, runs about 3,741 meters on a mountain of about 700 to 800 meters above sea level, dotted with 19 beacon towers.     The wall at the Badaling section averages seven to eight meters in height, six to seven meters in thickness, with a width of four to five meters on top.     Over the past six decades, more than 450 heads of state and government have visited the Badaling section.     The Great Wall is listed among the UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage sites given its historic status.     Separated sections of the Great Wall were built as early as 2,000 years ago by small kingdoms to defend against raids from nomadic tribes to the north.     When Emperor Qinshihuang, the country's first emperor, united China for the first time in 221 B.C., he ordered the separate sections linked together, forming a complete military defense system.     The Great Wall today was mostly rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644).     With its sections stretching from northeast to west China, the Great Wall now runs 6,700 kilometers long and its section at Badaling is the first part that opens to tourists.

When the mainland began to open up, the enterprises and industries also worried that they would be beaten by overseas competitors, but 30 years after, they not only survived but also became stronger, Chen said. "The restrictions will prevent mainland companies from enjoying fair competition."     She cited the complicated procedure that mainland businessmen had to undergo to travel to Taiwan.     "We have invested in an IT firm in Taiwan. Research work requires cooperation between staff on both sides and they have to travel a lot across the Strait. When there is an emergency, our mainland staff always could not go to Taiwan promptly," she said. "In a world of tough competition, we should not sacrifice efficiency."     Many mainland companies are interested in real estate development, finance and telecommunication that are still not on the list.     Long Ge, vice president of Shanghai Xiandai Architectural Design Group, just finished a business tour in Taiwan.     "We hope to set up an office in Taiwan in near future," Long said.     His company hoped to launch real estate businesses, not only design but also construction and marketing, in Taiwan. "But we cannot if the restrictions remain there," he said.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama issued the China-U.S. Joint Statement here Tuesday, expressing the hope that the multilateral mechanism of the Six Party Talks would convene at an early date.     The two presidents reaffirmed in the joint statement the importance of continuing the Six Party Talks process and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.     The joint statement said the two sides will work together with other parties concerned to comprehensively achieve the purpose and overall goal of the Six Party Talks through consultations and dialogues.     "The Chinese side welcomed the start of high-level contacts between the United States and the DPRK," said the joint statement.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States can take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures towards Chinese poultry products, said Yao Jian, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce, on Friday.     Yao made the remarks in a comment on the ministry's official website on the 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which has modified the stance towards Chinese poultry imports, compared to that in the Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009.     "We welcome the changes," Yao said.     He pointed out, however, there are still restrictions against Chinese poultry products in the new bill.     "China is evaluating whether the restrictions are totally in line with the non-discrimination principle of the World Trade Organization and other relevant regulations," Yao said.     "China's poultry products are safe and reliable... We hope the United States can stand on the footing of maintaining mutual benefit in China-U.S. trade and take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures and normalize bilateral poultry trade at an early date," Yao said.     Yao hoped that the U.S. could modify relevant regulations to resume poultry imports from China.     The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 410-billion-U.S.-dollar Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009 in February, which said "none of the funds made available in this Actmay be used to establish or implement a rule allowing poultry products to be imported into the United States from the People's Republic of China."

BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- European fashion retailers are accelerating business expansion in China thanks to the nation's increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers.     Two companies that opened new outlets in China at a rapid pace this year included Sweden's H&M and Spain's Zara, both retailers of clothing and accessories for adults and youth.     H&M is ending this year with a total of 13 new stores, raising the company portfolio in China to 27 outlets, while Zara, opened 33 new stores in China, winding down the year with 60 in total.     "In China, new store openings have more than doubled due to strong domestic consumption, which has not been affected by the global financial downturn," said Wu Shuang, public relations manager of H&M China. I love to get everything here, and the prices are acceptable," said Liu Dan, a woman in her 20s shopping at one of Zara's Beijing stores. Liu, who works in the public relations department at an international company, said she is also a regular patron of H&M in Beijing. Both H&M and Zara stores are often crowded with local consumers, especially on the weekends.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and he welcomes China to be a "strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     Obama made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese youths in China's economic hub Shanghai.     He said the world is fundamentally interconnected and power in the 21st century is no long a zero-sum game.     "The jobs we do, the prosperity we build, the environment we protect and the security we seek are all shared, " he said. "One country's success does not come at the expense of another."     He arrived in Shanghai late on Sunday and met city officials Monday morning before his meeting with young Chinese.     He will head to Beijing Monday afternoon.
