BEIJING, Feb 7 (Xinhua) -- After some parts of the drought-stricken north China embraced the long-awaited rain on Saturday, more rainfall was expected to come on Sunday, said National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Saturday.     Rain or snow is forecast for Sunday and next Monday in parts of the northwest and southwest China. They will also spread to the country's north and central regions, according to the NMC. BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin met visiting Taiwan journalists here Thursday, expecting media to bridge the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), urged media on both sides to improve cooperation and exchanges as a bridge between people across the Strait.     Their cooperation will help create a favorable environment for cross-Straits exchanges and encourage people on both sides to work for peaceful development, he said, when meeting with journalists from the Taiwan-based United Daily News (UDN) headed by Duncan Wang, chief executive officer (CEO) of UDN Group.     Jia appreciated the efforts UDN has made to improve relations and promote cooperation across the Strait.     The two sides of the Strait have seen favorable interaction since last year, while the relations headed for a peaceful development, he said. BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China said it would raise benchmark retail prices of gasoline and diesel by 290 yuan (42.46 U.S. dollars) per tonne and 180 yuan per tonne, respectively, as of midnight Tuesday.     It is the second oil price adjustment this year. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner, cut benchmark pump prices of gasoline and diesel by 140 yuan and 160 yuan per tonne, or 2 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, on Jan. 14.     Experts said more frequent price adjustments show China can respond more quickly to international oil price changes after a new pricing mechanism took effect Jan. 1, 2009. On the previous trading day, it settled at 53.80 U.S. dollars a barrel, the highest price since Dec. 1.     Under the new mechanism, China's domestic prices are to be "indirectly linked" to global crude prices "in a controlled manner."     "The 'indirect link' would be based upon average global crude prices, while taking into account domestic production costs, taxation, and 'appropriate profits' of oil producers," deputy director of the pricing department of the NDRC, Xu Kuning, said.     Government-set fuel prices were previously changed infrequently.     As a result, either Chinese drivers ended up paying more than those in other countries when crude prices dropped, or domestic refineries suffered huge losses when crude prices surged.     Last Dec. 18, when the international crude price dropped from a record 147 U.S. dollars a barrel to less than 40 U.S. dollars, the NDRC announced a move to cut pump prices by 900 yuan and 1,100 yuan per tonne for gasoline and diesel, respectively.     The new pricing mechanism was announced the following day and took effect at the beginning of this year.     In Tuesday's notice to raise pump prices, the NDRC urged the two state-owned oil producers, PetroChina and Sinopec, to increase oil production to meet demands.     It also urged local pricing regulators to strengthen supervision over oil prices and crack down on any price violations.     China's crude oil output reached 190 million tonnes in 2008, up2.3 percent year-on-year, the highest growth in three years, according to the China Petroleum and Chemical Association.     Imports of crude oil rose 9.6 percent year-on-year to 179 million tonnes last year, which accounted for 48 percent of total crude oil demand.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for the country's law-enforcement personnel to learn the selfless dedication to the people from Tan Dong, a policeman in Sichuan Province.     Tan, 45, was a traffic policeman in Dayi County of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan. He died of myocarditis on Jan. 5 because of long-time hard work at his position.     On Dec. 29 last year, in order to save a person having fallen into a trench in a car accident, Tan jumped into the cold water and got a serious cold. Being seriously sick afterwards, Tan insisted on working, until the last minute of his life.     After his death, Tan was honored as a first-class model by the Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.     On Friday, some of Tan's relatives and colleagues were invited to give a report on his heroic deeds in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The audience were deeply moved by the report and gave applauses to show their respect for the hero.     More than 800 police and citizen representatives listened to the report.     Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Tan's families and colleagues before the report.     "He is an ordinary, but great person. He is the model for the police, and also a good example for China's grassroots officials," Zhou said.     In Tan Dong's diary, he wrote: one cannot be a public servant if he has no intention of dedication.     "He did what he said," Zhou said.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday urged Japan to proceed with discretion in word and deed over the Diaoyu Islands issue.     Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expatiated China's stance over the issue when holding talks with his Japanese counterpart Hirofumi Nakasone, urging Japan to act with discretion in word and deed over the Diaoyu Islands issue.     Nakasone arrived here Saturday afternoon for his two-day visit to China.     During the talks, both sides made candid and in-depth exchange of views over regional and international issues of common concern, and agreed to fulfil the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries and maintain steady development of China-Japan relations.     Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in bilateral, regional and international issues to cope with the international financial crisis, noting that their cooperation is in the interests of both peoples, and conducive to the world peace, stability and development.     Before his China tour, Nakasone said, in the wake of Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso's remarks on Thursday, that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and The United States was applicable to the Diaoyu Islands.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu rejected Nakasone's remarks later in a press release, saying that any words and deeds that bringing the Diaoyu Islands into the scope of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty are absolutely unacceptable for the Chinese people.     Ma stressed that the Diaoyu Islands and adjacent islets had been Chinese territories since ancient times and China held "indisputable" sovereignty over the islands.

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- North China's severe drought is still threatening 104 million mu (6.9 million hectares) of farmland in north China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Sunday.     The drought-affected farmland dropped only 6.41 million mu, compared to a day earlier, although the country is going all out to fight the worst drought in decades, including artificial rain.     Among the total affected farmland, 30.33 million mu was seriously threatened by the drought, though 940,000 mu less than a day earlier, and 4.21 million mu had dried out, according to the office.     In the meantime, 4.68 million people and 2.5 million heads of livestock are still facing water shortage.     About 88.42 million mu of winter wheat crops are suffering from the drought, 5.88 million mu less than a day earlier, in provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi, and Gansu.     The respite was limited as there was no effective rainfall in the drought-hit winter wheat growing provinces Saturday, although 5.11 million mu of wheat farmland was watered by irrigation facilities.

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday sent a message of condolences to his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano over the heavy loss of life and property in a deadly earthquake that struck central Italy.     In the message, Hu expressed condolences to the victims and their families and those affected by the earthquake on behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as in his own name.     Hu believed that, under the leadership of Napolitano and the Italian government, the Italian people will overcome the difficulties arising from the quake and restore the normal life and work in the quake-affected areas at an early date.     A powerful earthquake hit central Italy early Monday, killing 207 people, injuring about 1,500 and leaving around 70,000 homeless, said the latest reports.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao also sent messages of condolences to Italian Senate Speaker Renato Schifani, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Gianfranco Fini and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, respectively.
