BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday visited an exhibition which pays tribute to victims of the May earthquake in Sichuan Province and the nation's concerted efforts to assist the disaster-stricken areas.     Photos and videos showing the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, as well as items that were used to rescue victims drew attentions of the leaders.     They were also briefed on how the people from all walks of life had made donations and contributions to help the earthquake-stricken areas recover from the country's worst disaster in the past 30 years. The quake, which has left more than 80,000 dead or missing, was the deadliest and strongest tremor to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations.

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, has started the first-class national food safety emergency response to deal with the tainted Sanlu milk powder incident that has caused kidney stones in at least 432 babies.     The State Council has set up a national leading group comprising officials from the Health Ministry, the quality watchdog and local governments for the incident.     A preliminary investigation has confirmed the Sanlu baby milk powder contaminated by melamine was the cause of kidney stones in infants, said an official statement released here Saturday evening.     The melamine substance found in some of the Sanlu products was deliberately added to increase the protein percentage in raw milk or milk powder, it said.     The statement said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council attached high importance to the issue, urging all-out efforts in treating the affected babies. The patients will be given free medical treatment and the cost will be shouldered by the government.     Meanwhile, the State Council urged a thorough overhaul of the milk powder market, directing the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to join other departments to check all the brands of baby formulas circulating in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves.     The reason why the Sanlu baby formula was contaminated must be found out as soon as possible, the State Council said, directing the local government and relevant departments to overhaul all the links including the milk powder production, cow raising, raw milk collection and dairy processing.     Based on the findings, the criminals and all those responsible would be severely punished, it said.     Relevant local government and departments should draw lessons from the incident and improve the food safety and quality supervision mechanism to ensure the food safety of the public, it added.     The State Council has directed the provincial government of Hebei, where the Sanlu group is based, to halt production of the group. An investigation team set up by the health ministry and other departments is also in the province to probe into the cause, and the quality watchdog AQSIQ is conducting an all-round overhaul of baby milk powder producers across the country

Asahi Breweries Ltd., Japan's largest beer producer, is targeting the Chinese milk products market with an all-around manner with its new milk factory being under construction in China's Shandong Province, company officials told Xinhua Saturday.     A milk company, which has been building the factory, was established in Laiyang city, Shandong Province, in April. It's the first time for a large-scale Japanese corporation to enter the Chinese integrated milk business in the fields of both production and sales.     The company is owned 90 percent by Asahi. Business of the new company will involve the entire process from raising cows to marketing, while products will be sold to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao under Asahi's proprietary label, according to Asahi Breweries officials.     Price of the Asahi milk products will be about 50 percent to 100 percent higher than average local milk, and sales in the first year will be targeted at 1 ton per day, they said. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank on Friday said it will continue international cooperation to tackle the global financial crisis and maintain market stability.     The pledge came two days after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced an interest rate cut in a co-ordinated global move to revive solvency in the international financial system.     The PBOC on Wednesday cut the benchmark lending and deposit rates by 0.27 percentage points and the reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points amid growing fears of a slowing economy and falling equities market.     "The PBOC will continue close contacts and cooperation with counterparts and international financial organizations to jointly maintain stability of global financial market," PBOC spokesman Li Chao told Xinhua.     The PBOC would closely watch the developments and effects of the crisis and take timely and flexibly measures according to changes in the domestic and international situations to guard against financial risks, Li said.     The global economic slowdown reduced demand for Chinese exports and inevitably affected China's economy, he said.     The central bank was fully confident and capable of dealing with the crisis and maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth.     "China has a huge domestic market and the liquidity is abundant," he said. "As long as we take strong measures to boost domestic demand, the economy has big potential for sustainable growth."     A PBOC statement on the third-quarter meeting of its monetary policy committee said it would take flexible and prudent macro-economic control measures to boost economic growth.     The PBOC was not optimistic in its global economic outlook as intensifying fluctuations in the financial markets had affected the real economy.     It said it would boost coordination between monetary policies and fiscal, industry, export and financial regulation policies to help transform economic growth mode and boost domestic demand to balance international payments.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

XIANYANG, Shaanxi, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao has written to the Tibet Nationalities Institute (TNI) to celebrate its 50th founding anniversary, which was the first institution of higher learning for ethnic Tibetans set up by the Central Government outside Tibet Autonomous Region.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, hailed the institute's "important contribution to the economic development and social progress" of Tibet, which has turned a great number of ethnic Tibetans into high-quality cadres and specialists.     Hu expressed the hope that the TNI would continuously improve its managerial level in teaching, play a better role as the training base for Tibetan cadres, and make greater contributions to improving the life of people of different ethnic groups in Tibet and promoting stability and unity in the region.     A ceremony was held on Sunday at the TNI in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, northwest China. Raidi, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, who is an ethnic Tibetan and a former leader of Tibet Autonomous Region, attended the celebration.
