This figure, revised up from the previous 755.4 billion U.S. dollars, means China remains the largest overseas holder of U.S. treasury bonds.

HONG KONG, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The relationship between the United States and China has been growing despite potential friction over trade and other issues, said Clark T. Randt Jr., former U.S. ambassador to China, at a lecture in Hong Kong on Friday.Randt said the potential trade friction, which should not be surprising given the dire economic situation and the upcoming mid- term elections in the United States, was more likely to come from the Congress rather than the administration.Randt, who had been U.S. ambassador to China from July 2001 to January 2009, said it was not surprising that the two countries should have disagreements given the differences in history, culture and the values."But the important thing is to keep in mind ... the awareness on both sides of the very important strategic interests we share," he added.The leaders in both Washington and Beijing understand that the two countries share strategic interests on many topics, Randt said, adding that he was "sure that the United States policy towards China has not changed.""More and more Americans are trying to know China, though the Chinese people still know the United States better than the Americans know China. There are currently 11,000 to 12,000 Americans studying in Beijing," he said.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The appreciation of renminbi, or China's currency yuan, will not help tackle the global economic imbalance, economists said here Saturday.The idea that yuan's appreciation would cure global economic imbalance was not going to happen, Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, said at the China Development Forum 2010.To solve trade imbalance, countries such as the United States and China should seek measures to encourage domestic consumption, improve social well-being and reform pension system, instead of sticking to the exchange rate issue, Gurria said.The exchange rate adjustment, especially between the United States and China, would not help cut the U.S. trade deficit, while one way to tackle the problem is to loose restrictions on high-technology exports to China, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said.Since China overtook Germany to become the world's largest exporter, the country is facing increasing criticism for devaluating the yuan to earn artificial price advantages. Some U.S. senators have recently ratcheted up pressure on yuan appreciation and urged the government to label China as currency manipulator."If the U.S. government names China as a currency manipulator, quite unfortunately, it will hurt the bilateral relations at least in short and medium term," said Li Daokui, director of the Center for China in the World Economy of Tsinghua University."The two countries should be cooperative to solve the problem, while naming China as a currency manipulator will be no help," Li said."After all, it will not be in the interests of the United States, China and the whole world if the two countries' disputes escalate into a trade war," he said.

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers and political advisors from Tibet and Xinjiang said Friday that cultural and religious freedom is fully respected and protected according to law in the two ethnic regions, fighting back against an annual U.S. human rights report."If you go to Tibet, you will find scripture halls or shrines in almost all believers' families, and see prayer banners or cairns of stones with scripture texts almost everywhere," Padma Choling, chairman of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Regional Government, told Xinhua on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the country's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), in Beijing."Monasteries in Tibet are always thronged with believers turning the prayer wheels or paying homage to Buddha. BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Severe drought has affected 51 million Chinese and left more than 16 million people and 11 million livestock with drinking water shortages, China's State Commission of Disaster Relief said Friday.About 4.348 million hectares of farmland were affected and 940,200hectares would yield no harvest, the commission said in a statement.Since autumn last year, southwest China, including Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality, has received only half its annual average rainfall and water stores are depleted. Photo taken on March 17, 2010 shows the thirsty fields of a terrace in Donglan County, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The local government and people were mobilized to fight against the drought here.The commission said the ministries of finance, agriculture, civil affairs and water resources had appropriated more than 370 million yuan (54.4 million U.S. dollars) to the provinces, autonomous region and municipality to combat the drought.The funds are generally to be used to purchase drinking water, equipments and supplies for urgent water construction projects.More than 4,000 troops of Chinese People's Armed Police Force (PAPF) in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi and Chongqing have been mobilized to help rural residents with water supplies.The PAPF detachment in Yuxi, Yunnan Province, has supplied more than 17 tonnes of its water reserve to 176 households in the province. In Sichuan, PAPF troops used their machinery to help pump underground water.In Guangxi, the PAPF troops transported water in trucks to 13 remote villages which were home to more than 7,000 farmers and 6,000 livestock.Weather forecasts show no obvious indications of rain in the drought region in the next 10 days.
