WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said on Monday that China will continue to cooperate with other countries to cope with the current financial crisis.     "For the international community, the most urgent task is to join efforts to stem further deterioration and spread of the crisis -- the major threat to global growth -- and restore global economic and financial stability," said Yi Gang, vice governor of the People's Bank of China     "China will continue to strengthen its cooperation with concerned countries and hopes that all governments will work together to overcome the current difficulties and restore international financial stability," he said in a statement at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.     He urged the two Bretton Woods Institutions to "fulfill their mandates to maintain global monetary and financial stability and facilitate sustainable, balanced growth."     The fund should give the surveillance priority to the ongoing financial turmoil, deepen its analysis, learn lessons, and listen to the opinions of member countries, said the senior official of China's central bank.     "From the medium- and long-term perspective, the fund must address the inherent deficiencies of the current international monetary system and foster an international financial architecture adaptive to the evolving global economy and financial markets," he noted.     As the largest multilateral development institution, the World Bank should re-assess the challenges confronting the developing countries -- soaring food and fuel prices, higher financing costs, deteriorating balance of payments positions, and mounting inflationary pressures, said Yi Gang.     "With the advantages of its financing capacity and expertise, the World Bank should urge the developed countries to shoulder their due responsibilities in stabilizing the global economy through targeted measures, carried out in an even-handed and professional fashion," he said.     Yi Gang also stressed the fundamentals of the Chinese economy are "solid and resilient."     "We are confident we can weather the financial turmoil," he said. "With the global economic slowdown, it is important that China maintains its stable and relatively rapid growth." 

BEIJING, April 2 -- China Everbright Bank, Everbright Group's banking unit, will go public in Shanghai in July or August, Everbright Group said Tuesday.     The bank will issue more than 820 million A shares, accounting for 10 percent of its enlarged share capital, said Everbright Group, a State-owned financial conglomerate.    The bank may float shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange if its Shanghai IPO is successfully completed before the 2008 Olympic Games.     "But the bank has no timetable for a Hong Kong listing yet," said its vice-president Xie Zhichun. "And the Shanghai listing plan will be further discussed by and is subject to approval from the board and shareholders."     Xie added: "The board may enlarge the A-share issue further to more than 10 percent of the enlarged share capital as we don't know whether we can realize a Hong Kong listing or not, but we expect to finish the Shanghai listing before the Olympic Games."     The bank has postponed inviting strategic investors as concerns are rising that the subprime crisis will worsen the finances of financial institutions, the bank said.     "We will restart the work after the strategic investors release their third-quarter report," said Li Jie, another vice-president of the bank.     The bank is a target for foreign investors given its low share price and large scale. It said earlier it will reserve a 20 percent stake for foreign strategic investors and would like to pick investors that can hold the bank's stakes for a long time.     The bank disclosed that Industrial Bank from France showed interest to invest in it, but the French banking scandal hindered talks.     It will restart inviting strategic investors after its Shanghai listing, the bank said.     The bank is 24.16-percent-owned by China Everbright Group and 21.4-percent-owned by Hong Kong-listed China Everbright Ltd.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- From anti-terrorism drills to halt of flights during the opening ceremony, Beijing is taking every possible measure to ward off terrorism and ensure security for next month's Olympic Games.     China Civil Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday a new move for Olympic security that no planes would be allowed to take off or land at Beijing Capital International Airport from 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 8, the night of the Games' opening ceremony. "Now we are entering a critical stage to boost rehabilitation." Wen went into the field, asking farmers about their crop yield. Told there was a bumper rice harvest despite the quake, he urged local officials to resume production as soon as possible where conditions allow.     At quake-devastated Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. of Deyang, which Wen had visited twice previously, he was visibly happy to see production back at the pre-quake level.     He urged employees to continue working to build the company into a more advanced, secure and sustainable organization.     The premier also visited a road repair site near the epicenter,Yingxiu, praising the soldiers and workers who braved aftershocks and landslides to keep the road clear after the quake.     The worst-hit Beichuan County must be relocated as it was severely damaged in the quake and the original site might be vulnerable. Wen again visited the debris where the county seat was once located. He trudged on foot for an hour through the debris with a heavy heart.     He laid a wreath at a mass burial site of quake victims and observed a one-minute silent mourning period together with his entourage.     He told survivor Wang Dan, a 26-year-old woman of Qiang ethnic group, that the pain was overwhelming but the Beichuan people were strong.     "Although half of the population perished, the other half -- the survivors -- will build a new Beichuan with hope," he said.     When invited by Wang to come again when the new Beichuan is built, Wen promised he would come to the place, which he would remember for life.     He told local officials that the county should be rebuilt not only materially but also spiritually, as its unique Qiang culture should be preserved and promoted.     Presiding over a meeting attended by Sichuan provincial-level officials on Tuesday night, Wen said the quake rescue and relief work had entered an important phase of reconstruction. He urged local governments to seriously implement the reconstruction plan approved by the State Council, the country's Cabinet, and lead local people to accomplish the major tasks of rehabilitation and reconstruction in three years.

ZHANJIANG, Guangdong, June 28 (Xinhua) -- After a five-day visit to China, Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer "Sazanami" left the southern Guangdong Province port city of Zhanjiang on Saturday morning.     Sazanami, with its 240-member crew, is the first Japanese warship to visit China since World War II.     A farewell ceremony was held at the port before its departure.     "Please send the love and friendship of the Chinese navy and people back to Japan," Lt. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will stick to an economic policy that focuses on curbing inflation for the rest of the year, a senior official on Wednesday told China's top legislature, as slowing output and rising prices loom over the post-Games economy.     Economic planners would exert themselves to increase supplies of necessities, closely track key prices and make price controls more effective, National Development and Reform Commission deputy chief Zhu Zhixin told the fourth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress.     "A lot of factors can drive prices up," said Zhu. "There is a strong demand for primary products, with prices hovering high on international markets, while more expensive land and labor at home will add to costs."     His statements came after China's main inflation indicator showed a deceleration in July and as the world wondered where the already slowing economy would head after the glitz of the Games.     The consumer price index was up 6.3 percent last month over July last year, lower than the 7.1 percent in June and 7.7 percent in May, as tighter monetary policies adopted last year seemed to bite.     Meanwhile, the country's economic output in the first half was 10.4 percent higher, compared with 10.6 percent in the first quarter and 12.2 percent in the first half last year.     Zhu said the output slowdown was "a moderate correction from a high level".     "The national economy is heading in the direction expected by the macro-control policy."     Zhu cited the pressures on some industries and enterprises as one of the major conflicts in the economy, saying it would take time for the latest supportive policies to show an effect and for companies to adjust.     He told the top legislature the government would continue to seek a balance between fighting inflation and maintaining growth.     Tasks for the rest of the year included improving the contribution of domestic consumption to economic growth, boosting agricultural output and increasing aid to small enterprises, he said.     The government had been focusing on preventing the economy from overheating before changing the goal to "keeping steady, rapid growth" in July.     Many analysts foresaw a loosening of the tight monetary policy to provide liquidity for enterprises, especially exporters, that were squeezed by weakening demand, credit controls and rising costs.     Earlier this month, administrators raised the export tax rebate rates for some textiles and garments, while the central bank allowed more credit to small and medium-sized enterprises.     "The fiscal and monetary policies are likely to be eased, if the current trend is a guide," said CITIC Securities analyst Zhu Jianfang. "The central bank is not expected to come up with any big tightening moves after the Olympics."

China's hotel and catering industry saw its retail sales rose 24.3 percent in the first seven months over the same period last year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Friday.The growth rate was 6.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year, said the MOC on its website.Retail sales of the country's hotel and catering industry amounted to 837.49 billion yuan (1.99 billion) between January and July, accounting for 14 percent of the nation's total domestic retail sales during the same period.China's retail sales of consumer goods in the first seven months of this year was 5.9672 trillion yuan, up 21.7 percent, compared with 15.5 percent growth rate recorded over the same period of last year.Foreign hotel and catering enterprises established 399 new branches in China during the January and July period, down 18.2 percent over the same period last year, while contract value rose 4.3 percent to .71 billion.The country's hotel and catering industry reaped 116.8 billion yuan in July alone, representing an increase of 26.5 percent over the same month last year, according to the MOC.

NANNING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region became the 10th Chinese locality to have replaced gasoline and diesel oil with bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday out of environmental and energy efficiency concerns.     Petrol stations in all the 14 cities of Guangxi began to sell bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday and in two weeks, traditional petrol and diesel oil will be phased out, said Fu Jian, an official in charge of transport with the regional government.     Fu said about 350,000 motor vehicles and more than 3 million motorbikes will have their tanks cleaned up for the fuel change.     Presently nine other Chinese provinces are using ethanol fuel including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in the northeast, Henan and Hebei provinces in the north, Anhui, Shandongand Jiangsu provinces in the east and the central Hubei Province.     Guangxi is the first Chinese locality to commercially produce ethanol fuel with cassava instead of grain. The region produces 7.8 million tonnes of cassava a year, more than 60 percent of China's total.     It is home to China's first bio-ethanol fuel production base that went into operation in December in the coastal city of Beihai. The base is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of biofuel annually out of about 1.5 million tonnes of cassava.     China banned the use of grain for ethanol production last year to ensure sufficient food supplies, and biofuel manufacturers havesince turned to sweet potatoes, sorghum and straw stalks instead.     Ethanol fuel is believed to help ease China's energy supply bottleneck. Customs statistics say China's net crude oil import climbed at least 12 percent year on year to reach 160 million tonnes in 2007, and the country's reliance on crude oil import is at least 46 percent.     It is also believed to help cut carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, by around 30 percent and 10 percent respectively.     Chinese officials said the country's ethanol fuel sales will reach 30 million tonnes in 2010 to make up half of the total gasoline supplies.
