Cross-Straits relations now exhibit a bright future of peaceful development, said Jia.     In May last year, the Chinese Kuomintang Party (KMT) won in the island's elections. BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance announced Monday that the country's fiscal revenue in June rose 19.6 percent year on year to 686.75 billion yuan (100.5 billion U.S. dollars).     However, in the first half of this year, fiscal revenue fell 2.4 percent to 3.398 trillion yuan, said the ministry in a statement on its website.     The growth rate last month was 14.8 percentage points higher than the growth rate in May. Fiscal revenue fell 9.9 percent in the first four months this year from a year earlier to 2.05 trillion yuan due to shrinking business profits hit by the global economic slowdown and active fiscal policies including tax cuts to buoy domestic economic growth.     The ministry attributed the revenue rise in June to the stabilization of overall economic performance, growing business profits and the increase in the cigarette tax.     The government announced on June 20 the tax on cigarette cartons costing 70 yuan or more would rise to 56 percent from 45 percent, and the tax on cigarette cartons costing less than 70 yuan would rise from 30 to 36 percent.     Sales tax revenues rose 63.1 percent year on year in June, with business tax revenues edging up 6.4 percent, but the ministry did not specify the figures.     In June, China's fiscal expenditure increased 21.5 percent to 640.56 billion yuan from a year earlier. From January to June, the figure stood at 2.89 trillion yuan, up 26.3 percent from the same period last year.     The government unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November last year to be spent over the next two years to shore up the world's third largest economy, with 1.18 trillion yuan from the central government.     Fiscal revenue includes taxes as well as administrative fees and other government income, such as fines and income from state-owned assets.

HEFEI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged efforts to fight pine wood nematode disease, which has caused severe damage to pine forests in several provinces.     Strong measures and more funds must be used to curb the spread of the disease, Hui said.     The disease, also known as pine wood cancer, can quickly kill huge numbers of trees. In China, the disease was first detected in1982 in eastern Jiangsu Province.     According to a conference in Huangshan City in eastern Anhui Province held by the State Forestry Administration, the disease has spread to 14 provincial regions, killed more than 5 million mu(333,333 hectare) of pine forests and caused huge losses.     Attendees at the conference agreed measures must be taken to stop the spread of the deadly disease by 2010 and reduce the area of affected forests 60 percent by 2030.

ZHENGZHOU, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin urged making all-out efforts to ensure economic growth, care for the lives of people and ensure stability during a research trip.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the call during a visit to central Henan Province from April 17 to 23, where he visited enterprises, urban and rural communities, research agencies and colleges.     There had been positive changes in China's economic development as the central government's macroeconomic policies started to pay off, Jia said. But downward pressure was still great, said Jia, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China raised gasoline and diesel prices by 600 yuan (about 87.8 U.S. dollars) per tonne, starting zero o'clock Tuesday.     The increase raised the price for gasoline by about 0.45 yuan per liter, or 8.6 percent, and the price of diesel by about 0.51 yuan per liter, or 9.6 percent, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in a statement on its Web site.     It was the third oil price adjustment this year. On May 31, the NDRC raised the pump prices of gasoline and diesel by 400 yuan per tonne, or 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively.     The adjustment was in response to "recent international oil price fluctuation" under the country's new fuel pricing mechanism, as international crude prices kept rising, said the statement.     According to the new mechanism, China's domestic prices are to be "indirectly linked" to global crude prices "in a controlled manner."     Under the pricing mechanism, China would consider changing benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price rises or falls by a daily average of 4 percent over 22working days in a row.     Oil prices settled at 69.16 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday, registering a 4.2 percent rise from the price of 66.31 dollars a barrel when the last adjustment took place on May 31.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will send a sports delegation to participate in the 2009 World Games to be held in Kaohsiung, a southern coastal city of Taiwan.     Liu Peng, chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), said athletes from nine associations of the COC will compete in the games.     He made the promise during his meeting with Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu in Beijing Friday.     The mainland will also send an observation delegation to the games, Liu said, adding that sports is a medium and bridge which connects people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.     Chen Chu said her delegation hoped to learn from the successful experience of the Beijing Olympic Games.     She led a promotion team for the 2009 World Games to the mainland on Thursday. The games will be held from July 16 to 26.

BRUSSELS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials and scholars from the European Union (EU) and China held a conference here, urging the two sides to enhance cooperation dedicated to seeking a global solution to the financial crisis.     "After the financial crisis hit us, we stood closer, supported each other and worked together for an early recovery of our economy and that of the world. We become tightly bound more than ever before," Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe said in a keynote speech at the conference in the European Parliament on Monday.     "We have every reason to cooperate," Song said, adding China and the EU have converging interest and share common responsibility.     Sino-EU relations has experienced slight derailing last year, as China postponed a summit with the EU due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the ** Lama when France held the EU presidency. Relations appeared back on track in the face of the global financial crisis.     Early this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Europe on a Journey of Confidence. Later during the G20 summit in London early this month, President Hu Jintao met a number of European leaders to consolidate mutual trust.     In an effort to build a joint front against the financial and economic crisis, a trade and investment delegation from China last month struck multi-billion-U.S.-dollar deals with European companies to boost trade.     Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan is scheduled to visit Brussels next week for high-level economic dialogues with EU counterparts.     The 11th China-EU Summit will be held in Prague in mid-May, as the Czech Republic is holding the current EU presidency.     The EU is the biggest organization of developed countries and China is the biggest developing country, Song said, adding bilateral relationship takes on greater global and strategic importance.     Antonie Quero-Mussot, deputy head of cabinet of EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, noted that cooperation between the EU, China and beyond is a necessary condition for a solution to the global financial crisis.     "Without the dialogue not only between the EU and China, but also between all the major economies... there will not be a solution to the crisis," he said.     His remark was echoed by Mei Zhaorong, former president of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.     "We can not solve the problem alone but have to work together," Mei said at the conference.     He also downplayed the possibility of a G2 framework, under which the United States and China are expected to have a joint central role of leading the world out of the crisis.     "We are not of the opinion that we alone with the U.S. can solve the problem," Mei said, "I do not think Europe like that opinion either."     "I think the current form of G20 are far better. We should look at developing countries and emerging economies," he added.
