BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first seven companies applying for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-alike market in China, have got green lights from the country's securities regulator on Thursday.     They are in the fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars), from the IPOs, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     "This means the seven enterprises are eligible to list on the market, but they still have some flaws in information issuance, which need to be improved," said Jiang Xinhong, a member of the review commission.     The flaws don't hinder the listings, but these enterprises should go through some necessary procedures before getting listed, said the CSRC.     The CSRC had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10, since it started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26.

NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25.     President Hu will attend a UN climate change summit in New York on Tuesday, address the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, and participate in a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament on Thursday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     In a note to heads of state and government regarding the summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the objective of the Summit on Climate Change, which I am convening on Sept. 22, is to mobilize the political will and vision needed to reach an ambitious agreed outcome based on science at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen." BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday urged Communist Party members and government officials to exert more efforts to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on better implementation of the theory.     He said after the first and second round of the theory implementation work, progress has been made in solving problems, institutional innovation and Party's working style building.     He urged Party members and government officials to better deal with social contradiction and disputes and further strengthen the social security work.     Xi also pointed out the third-round learning would mainly be held at towns, villages, communities, hospitals, and primary and secondary schools.     About 1.22 million grass-roots Party organizations with nearly 40 million members will join the third round learning work.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China is to launch a two-year campaign to fight corruption and misconduct in the construction sector, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said Monday.     The move aimed to crack down on offences such as embezzlement, bribery and misconduct in the construction sector and improve the system to prevent offences.     Zhang Geng, SPP deputy procurator general, said the procuratorates nationwide had investigated 16,830 bribery cases in the sector from January 2006 to June 2009, accounting for 46 percent of all commercial bribery cases during that time.     The campaign will focus its efforts on offences such as corruption resulting in substandard construction and giving the green light to construction without a permit.

XIAMEN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- China remains the most attractive country for foreign capital, despite that the country's foreign direct investment declined for ten straight months, a commerce official said Wednesday.     "China has been the top destination for foreign capital for 17 consecutive years," Wang Chao, assistant commerce minister, said at the World Capital Forum in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.     A report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on July 22 showed that China stands first on the list of five most attractive destinations for foreign capital, followed by the United States, India, Brazil, and Russia.     The country has received 48.3 billion U.S. dollars of foreign direct investment (FDI) from January to July this year, down 20.3 percent over the same time last year amid a global economic downturn, Wang said.     Wang said the country's prospects for overseas investment remains optimistic as it would simplify examination and approval procedures toward foreign investors.     It will also guide foreign investment to go to high technology industry, advanced manufacturing industry, energy saving and environment protection industries, in a bid to optimize investment structures.

BEIJING, Aug.3-- China's steel industry association said on Friday that it plans this year to unify the spot and long-contract prices for the country's iron ore imports.    It will also set a ceiling for charges levied by import trading firms, as part of an effort to regulate the market.     The proposal was the top item of discussion at the steel industry body's two-day semiannual meeting, said Luo Bingsheng, deputy chairman of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), at a press conference.     The term prices negotiated with global miners should become a benchmark unified price, and the import agencies could charge 3-5 percent in commission on top of the term prices, Luo said.     The move aims to regulate excess iron ore import by steel makers and trading firms, which distorted the supply and demand balance and disrupted the annual contract talks, Luo said.     The price talks, which are continuing, appeared to be snagged on China's insistence upon bigger reductions than the 33 percent cut agreed to earlier with Japanese and Korean steel mills. News reports and industry analysts say China wants a 40 percent price cut.     Luo said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive sales on the spot market, leading to huge stockpiles.     Spot iron ore accounted for 82.7 percent of imports this year, leading to excessive imports that far exceed actual needs, the CISA said.     Luo made the remark as the spot price of iron ore in China surged above the contract prices offered by three large miners - Rio, BHP and Vale.     Benchmark spot prices of iron ore in China rose above 0 a ton on Thursday, as compared with a ton in April, according to industry consultant Mysteel.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     There are 152 iron ore importers in China this year, exceeding the 112 licenses that CISA issued, the association said.     Luo said the annual talks were ongoing and CISA would keep working to push them forward.     "We are working for a reasonable result and hope to reach a win-win situation," Luo said.     "For small steel companies, a unified price system is definitely good news," said Fan Haibo, a steel analyst from Xinda Securities. "Large steel mills and trading companies have made huge profits by selling iron ore to small steel factories who do not hold import license."     "But how to define which firms have 'agent license' seems essential. Giving them the privilege is akin to guaranteeing a business always makes a profit," he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China contributed 19.2 percent of the world economic growth in 2007, up from 2.3 percent in 1978, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said. It said China tops the world in contribution to the global economic growth.     The report was the 18th by the NBS. It showcased the improving international status and influence of new China over years of development.     According to the NBS, China's gross domestic product (GDP) was 30 billion U.S. dollars in 1952, more than doubling by 1960, and reached 3.86 trillion U.S. dollars in 2008.     China had also become the world's third largest economy in 2008 by accounting for 6.4 percent of the global GDP.     Meanwhile, the country's gross national income (GNI) per capital has been catching up with the world average. The GNI per capita was 10.1 percent of the world average in 1978, and 32.3 percent in2008.     In terms of GNI per capita ranking among 209 countries and regions by the World Bank, China was 130th in 2008 at 2,770 U.S. dollars, up 15 places compared 750 U.S. dollars in 1997.
