SANYA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Friday with Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev and discussed the measures to withstand the impact of the global financial crisis.     The two leaders, who were in the city of Sanya for the 2009 meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in south China's Hainan Province, expressed willingness to make concerted efforts to cope with the crisis. He said the two countries should:     -- take effective measures to maintain the growth of bilateral trade;     -- fulfill previous agreements and give priority to the cooperation in the energy and resources sectors;     -- reinforce financial and investment cooperation to ensure smooth implementation of major cooperation projects;     -- promote cooperation in the non-resources field, such as infrastructures, so as to forge a more dynamic bilateral trade relation.     Nazarbayev said the two countries had signed a series of cooperative documents during his visit, which fully reflected the common will of the two nations to jointly resist the financial crisis and China's strong support to Kazakhstan.     He believed that China would certainly be able to cope with the challenges, which was crucial for strengthening the international effort in combating the crisis.     Kazakhstan agreed with China's tentative plan on enhancing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and was ready to work with China to boost cooperation in such sectors as oil and gas, agriculture, technology innovation, finance and transportation, he said.     The BFA, established in 2001, is a high-level forum where governments, businesses and scholars promote regional economic integration and bring Asian countries closer to their development goals.     Under the theme "Asia: Managing Beyond Crisis," more than 1,600participants will discuss how to cope with the international financial crisis.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities closed 1.47 percent up Wednesday to stand at 2,408.02 points, surpassing the 2,400 points mark, echoing the overnight Wall Street rebound.     The Shanghai Composite Index gained 34.81 points, or 1.47 percent to 2,408.02. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 174.06 points, or 1.94 percent to 9,156.01.     Gains outnumbered losses by 675 to 183 in Shanghai and 599 to 140 in Shenzhen.     Combined turnover expanded to 250.67 billion yuan (36.68 billion U.S. dollars) from 200.03 billion yuan on the previous trading day.     Coal shares boosted the index up, as there were reports Monday that the government might consider raising the coal price by 4 percent.     China Shenhua Energy, the country's leading coal producer, gained 5.8 percent to 21.9 yuan, while China Coal jumped 5.65 percent to 9.17 yuan.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index continued the upward trend of the previous trading day and touched a 2422.63 points intra-day high Wednesday, exceeding the previous intra-day high of 2402 points on Feb. 17.     Zhang Yunpeng, an analyst with Beijing-based Huarong Securities, said investors should not be overly optimistic about the continuing rebound, as the turnover in recent days was lower than that in mid-February, which suggested that some investors were still cautious.     China's top banking regulator Liu Mingkang said Tuesday the government would require foreign banks taking stakes in domestic commercial banks to hold those stakes for at least five years, rather than three as at present, to reduce risks for local banks.     Zhang said this was a piece of positive news for Chinese bank stocks for the long run, as this move would help stabilize their share prices.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China's top lender, rose 0.76 percent to 3.97, while the China Construction Bank, the country's second largest commercial lender, gained 0.47 percent to 4.32 yuan.     Chongqing Iron and Steel Co. rose 1.24 percent to 4.91 yuan, after the steel producer reported a 33.18 percent growth in net profit to 598.3 million yuan last year in its annual report released Wednesday.

TOKYO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), arrived in Tokyo to kick off his official goodwill visit Sunday afternoon.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, conveyed sincere greeting from the Chinese people to the Japanese people in a written statement delivered at the airport.     "China and Japan are important countries in Asia and the world at large. Chinese President Hu Jintao paid a successful visit to Japan last year, during which the leaders of the two countries reached important consensus to fully advance the China-Japan strategic relations of mutual benefits," he said in the statement.     "Sino-Japanese relations now stands in a new historic point and faces an important opportunity to go further ahead," he said.     "With concerted efforts made by both, I believe the visit can meet the pre-set goal of increasing political mutual trust, deepening mutually beneficial economic cooperation, expanding friendly communication and pushing forward our strategic relations of mutual benefits," he said.     Li is the highest-ranking official who visits Japan this year. During his stay, he will also meet with leaders of ruling and opposition parties and people from all walks of life.     Japan is the third leg of Li's four-nation tour which will also take him to the Republic of Korea. He has already visited Australia and Myanmar.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China should keep potential polluters away from the industry-heavy Yangtze river, the country's longest, by raising threshold and readjusting industrial layout, a political advisor said here Saturday.     "We must set quotas on and raise threshold for potential polluting plants along the Yangtze River to wipe out pollution from the roots," said Chen Qinghua, a member of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top political advisory body.     A monthly report on China's surface water quality showed the Yangtze River was slightly polluted in December 2008 and its branches suffered medium-level pollution, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.     China's sizzling economy has seen a surge of heavily polluting industries along the lower valley of the Yangtze River.     Nearly 10,000 of the 21,000 chemical companies in China are along the 6,300 km-long Yangtze River, according to Chen. More than 20 chemical industry parks were under construction.     Local governments had built more than 40,000 reservoirs along the river and its branches in a scrabble for water resources, which has further degraded Yangtze's ecological system, he said.     The government was expanding domestic demand and increase investment amid the global financial crisis, he said.     "We should take the opportunity to improve sewage treatment facilities in cities, and move faster to readjust industrial layout and structure along the river," said Chen, also chief of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), one of China's eight non-Communist parties.     China has seen a spate of industrial accidents along major rivers that disrupted water supplies in cities in recent years.     In the latest incident, at least 200,000 residents in Yancheng,a city in eastern Jiangsu Province, were deprived of tap water supply for three days last month after a chemical factory illegally dumped the disinfectant phenol into a local river.     The city mayor promised earlier this month to shut 33 of the city's 317 chemical plants to check contamination.

TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered all-out efforts to combat the severe drought in the country's vast wheat-growing area to ensure a good summer harvest, a State Council meeting was told Thursday. The central government on Thursday decided to earmark another 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) as drought relief fund in additional to 100 million yuan already allocated. The fund will be used to buy agricultural machinery and other production materials.     Lack of rainfall has led to severe drought in northern China, leaving about 141 million mu (9.3 million hectares) wheat or 43 percent of the country's total affected, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA). The Ministry of Water Resources also said it would enhance supervision and launch emergency plan when necessary.     Relevant departments should allocate special funds to aid poverty-stricken people in rural areas.     The Cabinet said it will send working teams to eight drought-hit provinces to discuss anti-drought procedures. The MOA has already sent 12 working teams of experts to the drought-hit provinces, to instruct farmers on drought relief work.     Plant diseases and pest prevention were discussed and local governments were advised to supervise and prevent the spread of severe animal diseases.     Efforts should also be made to monitor or combat forestry fire, upgrade anti-disaster ability and avoid casualty, the State Council said.

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) -- China voiced its strong dissatisfaction Wednesday against a U.S. Congress resolution on the Taiwan Relations Act saying it is an interference in its internal affairs.     "China is strongly dissatisfied and has lodged a solemn representation over the resolution adopted to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.     The U.S. House of Representatives voted for the resolution Tuesday.     The Taiwan Relations Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 1979, required the United States to provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character. China has never recognized the legitimacy of the act.     Qin said the Chinese government and people, from the very start, resolutely opposed the Act adopted by the United States unilaterally.     "We urge the United States to follow the basic norms guiding international relations and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, and stop the wrongful act of using the Taiwan issue to interfere in China's internal affairs," Qin said.
