BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders on Sunday attended a concert of a renowned Chinese singer to commemorate the 70th anniversary of her participation into the country's revolutionary artistic cause.     Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun and He Guoqiang, all members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, attended the concert performed by Wang Kun and her students.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory letter to the show, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.     Wang Kun, born in 1925, was the protagonist in the opera of the White-Haired Girl, a household legend describing the sufferings by local farmers under the exploitation of landlords before 1949.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- State-run companies in China should stick to the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice President Xi Jinping said Monday.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting held here to promote Party building in China's state-run enterprises.     Party building lay at the core of the competitiveness of state-run enterprises, Xi said, adding that "the CPC's leadership over the enterprises should be upheld unswervingly... in order to help enterprises retain scientific development".     Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at the meeting that bosses of the state-run companies headquartered in Beijing should increase the Party organs' involvement in the companies' decision-making process.     Party organs should participate in the process of the state-run companies' major decisions made by the companies' board meeting to ensure that they could play supervising functions, Li said.     Meanwhile, He Yong, deputy secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), urged the bosses of the country's state-run companies to be cleanhanded.     Restrictions and supervision over power should be intensified for the main leaders of the companies, He said, adding that the anti-corruption effort inside the state-run companies was an important part of the mechanism's construction.     The state-run companies' bosses should also enhance their discipline education and loyalty to the Party, the official said.     The anti-corruption effort in the state-run companies came after former chairman of Sinopec Chen Tonghai was sentenced to death last month with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes.     Chen took about 195.73 million yuan (28.66 million U.S. dollars) in bribes from 1999 to June 2007 by taking advantage of his positions in Sinopec, one of the country's major oil refiners.     Also present at Monday's meeting was Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who stressed that the top priority of state-run enterprises at the moment was to maintain steady and relatively fast development.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. GENEVA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday formally requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up an expert panel to investigate and rule whether a U.S. ban on Chinese poultry imports violates WTO regulations.     The request was made at a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, but it was rejected by the United States according to relevant procedures.     During the meeting, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the U.S. measure is "discriminatory" and "has damaged the lawful rights and interests of China's poultry industry."     "While violating various WTO rules, the measure has severely undermined the stable development of Sino-U.S. trade in poultry products," the Chinese delegation said.     At the heart of the dispute is the U.S. Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which contains a section prohibiting any funds being used to facilitate imports of poultry products from China. The act was signed into U.S. law in March, and China filed complaints to the WTO in on April 17.     While Monday's request for the WTO panel was rejected by the United States, China could make a second request at the end of this month. After the second request, the WTO panel will be established automatically.     It usually takes more than half a year for a WTO panel to give its final ruling on a trade dispute.     China and the United States banned imports of each other's poultry products in 2004 following outbreaks of bird flu. They agreed to lift the bans at the Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade in 2004.     China did lift the ban but has complained that the United States was not following suit.     China imported 580,000 tons of chicken products from the United States last year, accounting for about 75 percent of total chicken imports. 

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China resolutely opposes U.S. move to start anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into seamless steel pipes imported from China, the Ministry of Commerce(MOC) said.     The current hardships facing the U.S. steel industry was because consumption and demand waned after the financial crisis. "Blindly blaming Chinese imports of dumping or subsidies is lack of factual bases, which China strongly opposes," MOC announced in a statement on its website Saturday.     The statement came after U.S. Department of Commerce said Wednesday that it had initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations at the request of the U.S. Steel Corporation, V&M Star LP, TMK IPSCO and the United Steelworkers (USW).     The U.S. petitioners requested a 98.37-percent anti-dumping duty against the Chinese imports and additional countervailing duties to offset what they allege are Chinese government subsidies.     The case was the seventh such investigations this year launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce against Chinese imports that included claims of both dumping and subsidies, MOC said.     Resorting to trade protectionism would not solve the real problem, instead it would hurt the interests of U.S. downstream steel businesses as well as bilateral trade, it said.

In 2009 (January-September) ASEAN export to China was approximately 85.6 billion U.S. dollars.     China is the third largest source of import of ASEAN. Imports from China valued at nearly 107.0 billion U.S. dollars, the Thai minister said.     This will lead to an increase in green field investments and reinvestment of profit in sustainable way. This is in line with the objectives of the ASEAN Economic Community, she said.     China is the 8th largest investor in ASEAN, with accumulated investments as of 2008 valued at 6.1 billion U.S. dollars, while ASEAN accumulated investments in China as of 2008 were valued at 5.6 billion U.S. dollars, she said.     The 41st meetings have been focusing on the economic integration within the ASEAN region as the ASEAN Economic Community is expected to complete in 2015, in which investment, capital and skilled labor can flow freely.     Thai Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu, who presided over the official opening ceremony on Friday, said that it is crucial that the ASEAN region will be the outward-looking group since it is essential to live harmoniously within other community in the world as the ultimate goal for ASEAN integration.     Prior to the official opening ceremony, high level officials from the 10 ASEAN-member countries began on Wednesday discussing and setting up economic policies and topics prior to submitting to the related ministers on these following days.     And, on Thursday, the ASEAN economic ministers and Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma signed a long-awaited free trade agreement (FTA) for trade in goods after over six years of intense negotiations.

He vowed joint efforts with the country to cement bilateral exchanges in all fields to build better future for both sides. Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), hailed the progress of bilateral ties since the forging of diplomatic ties 17 years ago, citing frequent high-level visits, remarkable trade cooperation and increasing exchanges in cultural, technological and educational areas.
