China's employers have dual problems on the hiring front as they face the biggest salary increases in Asia needed to attract talent and the region's highest turnover, according to a survey.The findings appeared in the Friday edition of the China Youth Daily.Nearly one-third, or 32 percent, of the employers surveyed planned to raise salaries by at least 20 percent to attract badly-need talent, said the survey by human resources company Hudson.The survey covered employers' first-quarter plans and expectations.Year-end bonuses are expected to rise significantly, with 66 percent of the respondents planning to increase year-end bonuses at least 10 percent and almost one-fourth planning raises of more than 20 percent.But despite significant increases in compensation, staffing turnover has been heavy.Across all industries, 47 percent of companies surveyed had turnover rates of more than 10 percent in the past 12 months, and 13 percent said that the rate was more than 20 percent.China's staff turnover rate was highest in Asia, more than twice that of Japan, the Youth Daily report said. Unsatisfactory compensation and limited career progression were blamed for China's high turnover level.Among respondents, 22 percent agreed that limited career progression was a major cause of high turnover, while 18 percent believed it resulted from dissatisfaction over money.The report predicted a persistent increase in salary levels in China because of limited talent resources.

SHANGHAI, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The gas supply to about 10,000 households in Shanghai was suspended for eight hours after a gas pipeline was broken by a grab at a construction site on Thursday. No casualty has been reported, according to the municipal government. The accident happened at around 8 a.m. at the crossing of the downtown Caoyang and Shunyi streets. Workers said gas burst out after the grab broke a gas pipeline with a diameter of 300 millimeters. Though they tried to plug the crack with bricks and mud, the leak was out of control till rescuers from the municipal gas supply company arrived. The company cut the gas supply later and fire fighters sprayed water around the pipeline to dilute the gas to avoid explosion. The pipeline was repaired at around 4 p.m. and the supply had resumed by 6 p.m., according to the gas supply company.

LAS VEGAS -- Three men enslaved more than 20 members of a Chinese acrobatic team, feeding them little, paying them next to nothing to perform and confiscating their passports and visas, US authorities said. A woman who worked as an interpreter for China Star Acrobats escaped late last month and contacted authorities, the FBI said. She told police she and 20 teammates -- including five teens ages 14 to 17 -- were being held against their will. Social workers interviewed 14 of them Friday, according to a criminal complaint. According to the complaint, Li confiscated visas and passports and told them their phone calls home would be monitored. One girl who performed as a contortionist told authorities she was being paid (euro36) a month, while a boy who said he had been traveling with the troupe for two years said he received 0 (euro73) per month. Beijing - China is turning the site of a prison camp run by Japanese forces during World War Two into a war museum, the Xinhua news agency said on Sunday. More than 2,000 prisoners from the United States, Britain, the Netherlands and Australia were imprisoned at the camp in Shenyang, a Manchurian city formerly known as Mukden, between November 1942 and August 1945. BEIJING - Only 7.6 percent of migrant workers in China are satisfied with their social status, according to a survey carried out by Shanghai's Fudan University.The survey, which questioned 30,000 migrant workers in major Chinese cities, found 68 percent of migrant workers believed urbanites did not fully accept them or accept them at all.The report also showed that working overtime was common for migrant workers - more than 80 percent worked more than eight hours a day and 18 percent worked more than 10 hours.Only 16.4 percent of migrant workers had more than five days a month off and 55 percent had less than two days off a month, it said.Working overtime with little holiday made migrant workers tired so accidents easily occur, it said. China's production of natural gas rose 23.1 percent last year, faster than in 2006, to 69.31 billion cubic meters as the country used more "clean" energy, an industry association said.In 2006, output jumped 19.2 percent to 58.55 billion cubic meters, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) said.
