BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares continued Tuesday's rising momentum to hit a new high with Shanghai Composite Index closing at 3,188.55 on Wednesday, setting the highest close since June 2008 as coal, nonferrous metal and auto shares bolstered the rise.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.38 percent, or 43.39 points, to 3,188.55.     The Shenzhen Component Index advanced 0.68 percent, or 88.19 points, to 13,079.26. ZAGREB, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in the Croatian capital of Zagreb Friday for a state visit to strengthen the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two nations.     This is the first visit to Croatia by a Chinese head of state since the two countries established diplomatic ties 17 years ago.     In Zagreb, President Hu is expected to meet Croatian leaders to discuss how to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange views on major regional and global issues of common concern.     The two countries are expected to sign a host of cooperation deals involving various sectors during the visit.     "I believe that President Hu's visit to Croatia will have great impact on consolidating traditional friendship between China and Croatia and deepening all-round and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Hui last week. SHIJIAZHUANG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The brand of Sanlu Group, the dairy company embroiled in China's tainted-milk scandal, was sold at an auction Tuesday for 7.3 million yuan (1.07 million U.S. dollars), court officials said.     An unidentified individual entrepreneur from south China won the bid at an auction in the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court in northern Hebei Province. No further information about the bidder was released.     The auction started at 7 million yuan and drew three bids from only two bidders.     The "Sanlu" brand was worth 14.9 billion yuan in 2006, according to the China Brand Asset Evaluation Center.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine adulteration scandal broke last September. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007.     The company's tainted baby milk powder was found to have caused the deaths of at least six children and sickened more than 300,000others.     Beijing-based dairy producer Sanyuan bought the core assets of Sanlu, which went bankrupt in February, for 616.5 million yuan at an auction on March 4.     Also Tuesday, Sanlu sold 51-percent stakes in three dairy companies for 22.8 million yuan. The purchasers' identities were not immediately known.     But it failed to sell 51 percent stakes in another two dairy firms and withdrew 12 patent techniques from auction.     The bankruptcy trustee is to announce plans to dispose of Sanlu's last remaining assets, which include a 51-percent stake in a third dairy firm in Hebei's Baoding City

TOKYO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Japan and China vowed to promote cooperation on the topics of environment protection, technology trade and intellectual property rights (IPR) protection during their second high-level economic dialogue held here on Sunday. "China attaches great importance on saving the energy and protecting the ecology, while Japan has broad experience and advanced technologies on these areas," said Zhang Ping, chairman of China's National Development and Reform Commission, "So the two countries can achieve win-win results through close cooperation." "China, as a developing country, will face a lot of problems in the process of enforcement, but we will not shun such problems."     "China and Japan have a broad range of economic cooperation. We will use the working group mechanism to solve problems in respect of IPR protection," Chen said.     The memorandum signed by Chen and Nikai stipulates that the intellectual property working group meet once a year. Nikai asked that the working group convene its first meeting by the end of the year.     The one-day dialogue, co-chaired by Wang and Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone, was attended by senior officials from the two countries.     The dialogue mechanism, first held in Beijing in December 2007, was jointly launched by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during Wen's trip to Japan in April 2007.

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks have been active in transacting yuan cross-border settlement after the first deal was made Monday.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) said Tuesday it had dealt with yuan cross-border settlement totaling 17 million yuan (2.49 million U.S. dollars) in two days.     Many banks in Guangdong Province were active in dealing with yuan cross-border settlement. The Bank of China Guangdong branch transacted yuan cross-border settlement totaling 7.96 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) Tuesday.     "Guangdong Province has a large economic scale and is highly dependent on foreign trade. Yuan cross-border settlement could help enterprises avert exchange rate risks and reduce costs," said Cao Licong, deputy governor of the BOC Guangdong branch.     "The service is favored by enterprises and will be promising in the future," said Hu Ye, deputy governor of the ICBC Guangdong branch.     China launched its first yuan cross-border settlement Monday.     China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in Shanghai, and southern Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan cities to settle cross-border trade deals in Renminbi (RMB), or yuan.     China last week issued detailed regulations for the pilot program for cross-border trade settled in yuan. The rules specified how to make transactions using yuan to settle trade with Hong Kong and Macao and regional trade partners.

CHENGDU, Sichuan, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday expressed his appreciation of the world community for their strong support and valuable aid on the wake of last year's devastating earthquake in southwest China and called for further international cooperation in tackling major natural disasters.     "In face of grave natural disasters, the international community could support each other, enhance cooperation, join hands and jointly tackle the difficulties," Hu told some senior foreign diplomats who were invited to the capital of Sichuan Province on the anniversary of the quake.
