CHENGDU, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged designated provinces and municipalities to contribute more to the reconstruction work in quake-hit areas in the southwestern Sichuan Province.     Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection to Sichuan on Jan. 2-4. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- The United States welcomes the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties and "more positive and stable" cross-Straits relations, said a China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday.     The statement said that both sides underscored the importance of the Taiwan issue in China-US relations.     The Chinese side emphasized that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed the hope that the US side will honor its relevant commitments and appreciate and support the Chinese side's position on this issue.     The US side stated that the United States follows its one-China policy and abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, said the statement.     The two sides reiterated that "the fundamental principle of respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the core of the three Sino-US joint communiques which guide China-US relations. Neither side supports any attempts by any force to undermine this principle," said the statement.     The two sides agreed that respecting each other's core interests is extremely important to ensure steady progress in China-US relations.     Both countries believe that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust is essential to China-US relations in the new era.     The US side reiterated that it welcomes a strong, prosperous and successful China that plays a greater role in world affairs.     The two sides are of the view that in the 21st century, global challenges are growing, countries are more interdependent, and theneed for peace, development and cooperation is increasing. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao admitted Sunday that it'd be good if lending by Chinese banks had not been growing on a too large scale as a result of the government's immediate response to the global financial crisis."It would be good if our bank lending was more balanced, better structured and not on such a large scale," he said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency.     Wen said the State Council had noticed the problem in the middle of the year and moved to correct it. "It has been improving in the second half of this year," he said. BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw smooth flow of traffic Monday, the first workday of 2010, after a snow storm Sunday caused traffic breakdown in the national capital.     The city's bus and subway services went smoothly on Monday, with no gridlock and serious traffic accidents reported, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.     During the peak hours on Monday morning, the Beijing Subway Operating Company dispatched 20 additional subway trains to ease the passenger flow.     The early bus of all routes started off on time in the morning, according to the Beijing Public Transport Holdings.     Most of the bus services ran smoothly, while only 19 lines leading suburban mountainous areas were suspended, it said.     From 9:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Monday, more than 20,000 sanitation workers were dispatched to clean the snow in the city's main roads with 15,710 tonnes of snow-dissolving agent, said Zhang Zhiqiang, an official with the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group Co., Ltd.     By 9:00 a.m., all expressways in Beijing reopened to traffic, while some national and municipal highways were shut down due to the slippery road conditions.     The vehicle flow in Beijing was reduced Monday after authorities announced on Sunday that classes in primary and middle schools would be suspended on Monday, and urged institutions and companies to stagger their work time.     However, transportation in eastern Shandong Province and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was seriously affected by the heavy snow.     By 9:30 a.m. Monday, many expressways in Shangdong were closed and 19 flights cancelled in the Yantai International Airport.     In Inner Mongolia, 13 trains were delayed Monday in Hohhot, the regional capital, said the Hohhot railway authorities.     The No. 1820 train, carrying more than 800 passengers, started off at 5:10 p.m. after being stranded for 12 hours, they said.

ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov agreed here Sunday to continually advance bilateral cooperation in an all-round and sustainable way.     The Chinese president, who arrived here earlier in the day for a working visit, held talks with Berdymukhamedov in Ashgabat, capital of this Central Asia nation in the afternoon.     Hu said the Chinese and Turkmen economies are highly complementary to each other, and bilateral cooperation in all dimensions and various fields accords with the needs of economic development of both countries.     Hu outlined four areas that the two countries should focus on to advance practical cooperation. Despite the changes in international situation, the Turkmen government and people will always firmly push forward cooperation with China, he said.     Berdymukhamedov spoke highly of the rapid growth of bilateral trade in recent years, saying China has become one of the biggest trade partners to Turkmenistan.     Despite the impacts of international financial crisis, trade between China and Turkmenistan increased 135.5 percent in 2008 and38.7 percent in the first 10 months of 2009.     Berdymukhamedov said Chinese companies have made investment in oil and gas, transportation and other sectors in Turkmenistan and won respect of Turkmen companies.     He said the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline is an example of sincere cooperation under the strategic partnership of the two countries. He said the project is not only in the long-term interests of both countries and their peoples, but is also conducive to maintaining stability of the global energy market.     President Hu will fly to the border town of Turkmenabad Monday to attend a ceremony to inaugurate a natural gas pipeline linking China, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.     Berdymukhamedov said that under the new circumstance the two countries share a broad prospect of cooperation in all areas. Turkmenistan is ready to strengthen political dialogue and carry out practical cooperation with China in the fields of chemical industry, building material industry, science, culture and education.     The president said China is an important force for promoting world peace, stability and development. He expressed satisfaction with the effective cooperation between the two countries in multilateral organizations, saying the two sides share broad common interest and hold similar stances on international affairs.     Before the talks, Hu presented Berdymukhamedov with a list of books donated to the National Library of Turkmenistan.
