WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has congratulated the Chinese people on their "unbelievable accomplishments" over the past 60 years, saying that China's modern transformation is an "extraordinary historic event." "If anyone had predicted to me in 1971 what China looks like in2009, I would have thought he was dreaming... but you have made a reality out of these dreams, " Kissinger said in a recent interview with Xinhua at his New York office on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, which falls on Oct. 1.     Kissinger, who helped pave the way for the normalization of U.S.-China relations in 1979, said the 30-year-old bilateral relationship has grown remarkably. "In that sense, both sides really have to rebalance the relationship."     The United States needs to take into account the growing role China is playing, while China needs to adjust itself to assume bigger responsibilities, Kissinger said.     Meanwhile, cooperation remains a key solution to the global challenges, he added.     "The United States and China should have a very close relationship," Kissinger said. "They should constantly exchange ideas, so when they go into an international forum like the G20, they have parallel positions and can work together."     Energy and environment remain two major long-term challenges the world has to face, while nations worldwide have yet to coordinate in the globalized economic system, he said.     It is "the imperative of our time" that China and the United States cooperate on these global challenges, he said.     The Group of 20, or G20, should become an inclusive platform for international political and economic affairs for "the next few decades," he noted.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Eight Conference of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) came to an end Thursday, re-electing senior leader Jia Qinglin the council's chairman.     Jia is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     He attended the closing session and congratulated its success on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, saying facts indicate that the council has become a major link between the mainland and overseas Chinese, and a bridge between Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     He highlighted the role of the CPC in the great changes of New China in the past 60 years, stressing, "the Chinese nation will definitely play an even more splendid movement in the process of its great rejuvenation." LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.

CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer? She was born and grew up in Xinjiang, but she cannot speak Chinese (Mandarin); She has 11 children and many many grand children (a lot of them live abroad); she was once one of the richest women in China; she had been a representative for her people in the highest political body in China and had gushed so much praises for the Chinese government...," Weldon, a netizen in Canberra, said in a follow-up post to Sheridan's article.     "'Extermination of Uygur cultural?' or 'Ethnic cleansing?' or 'Suppressing the minority people?' or 'A woman compassionate for her cause?', I am confused," he said.     Jonny of China called the report "another anti-Chinese rant."     "I did not read all the replies. BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday China would not change the orientation of its stimulating economic policy as the country is at a critical stage in the recovery of the economy. Wen said, when meeting with World Bank President Robert Zoellick, that China's government would continue to pursue proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies.     "We will not change the orientation of our policy," Wen said.     Wen said China would fully implement and continue to enhance and perfect policy in response to the international financial crisis to achieve the goals of economic and social development. The Ministry of Commerce predicts China's exports will slow their decline or even grow on a monthly basis.     "The macro-economic policy and measures that China adopted in response to the international financial crisis have been proved inconformity with reality, prompt, forceful and effective," Wen said.     Wen said the world economy was now showing signs of stabilizing, but an all-round recovery would be a slow, difficult and complicated process. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said. SHANGHAI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China would firmly stick to its moderately easy monetary policy and concrete the recovery momentum of the country's economy, said vice governor of China's central bank on Wednesday. Su Ning, Vice Governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) made the remarks in a meeting held in the bank's Shanghai-based headquarter, saying a proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy were crucial for sustained growth.     Despite an initial economy recovery resulted from the government's stimulus efforts in the first half, the country still faced severe difficulties and challenges from both domestic and abroad.     In the second half, the PBOC would use a set of monetary policy mix to coordinate a "reasonable" credit structure based on market rules, and to ensure more loans to major infrastructure construction and technology innovation, Said Su.     China's economy rebounded to grow 7.9 percent in the second quarter driven by a surge of fixed-asset investment backed by government's 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package on last September.     Chinese banks lent a record 7.37 trillion yuan in the first half to shore up the economy, which sank to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's key July economic data adds to the optimism that the world's third largest economy is back on the track to recovery amid the global downturn, though challenges still persist. The July decline compared     MORE POSITIVE CHANGES     Both investment and consumption, two major engines that drive up China's growth, increased, according to statistics the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released Tuesday.     Urban fixed-asset investment rose 32.9 percent year on year in the first seven months. Retail sales, the main measure of consumer spending, rose 15.2 percent in July, following a 15 percent growth in June. The CPI was down 1.8 percent in July compared with the same month a year earlier, according to National Bureau of Statistics of China on Aug. 11, 2009Further signs of rebound in private spending supported a sustained growth recovery, Peng Wensheng, analyst at the Barclays Capital, said in an e-mailed statement to Xinhua.     Although exports, another bedrock that fueled China's fast growth in the past few years, fell on a year-on-year basis last month, there were signs of improvement.     China's foreign trade figures were better than they looked on the surface. July exports fell 23 percent from a year earlier, but increased 10.4 percent from June. Imports declined 14.9 percent year on year last month, but rose 8.7 percent month on month.     According to the General Administration of Customs, the country's foreign trade has risen since March measured from month to month, and the trend of recovery had stabilized.     Improvements in these data indicated China's economy was recovering and the government's policies to boost domestic demand and stabilize foreign trade had paid off, said Zhang Yansheng, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's economic planner.     Among other statistics released Tuesday, industrial output climbed 10.8 percent in July from a year earlier, quickening from 10.7 percent in June and 8.9 percent in May. Power generation, an important indicator measuring industrial activities, expanded 4.8 percent in July.     Peng expected the country's economic growth to rise above 8 percent in the third quarter this year and 10 percent in the fourth quarter.      　　POLICY STANCE UNCHANGED     Despite these positive changes in China's economy, uncertainties still existed in world economic development and some domestic companies and industries faced difficulties, said Song Li, deputy chief of the Academy of Macroeconomic Research under the NDRC.     As a result, the macro-economic policy orientation should remain unchanged, Song said.     China's economy grew only 7.1 percent in the first half this year. This compared with double-digit annual growth during the 2003-2007 period and also the first two quarters last year.     The government set an annual target of 8 percent for this year's economic growth, which was said essential for expanding employment.     China unveiled a four-trillion-yuan (584.8 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package and adopted proactive fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy to expand domestic demand, hoping increases in investment and consumption would make up for losses from ailing exports.     To stimulate economy, lenders pumped 7.73 trillion yuan of new loans into the economy in the first seven months, the People's Bank of China, the central bank, said Tuesday.     The surge in credit, however, sparked concerns over possible inflation and speculation about a shift in the country's monetary policy.     Economists dispelled such concerns, saying consumer prices were still falling and the growth in new bank loans eased in July.     The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, dipped 1.8 percent in July from a year earlier. The producer price index (PPI), which measures inflation at the wholesale level, fell 8.2 percent year on year last month.     New lending in July cooled to 355.9 billion yuan, less than a quarter of the June total of more than 1.5 trillion yuan.     Premier Wen Jiabao reaffirmed during the weekend that China would unwaveringly adhere to its proactive fiscal and moderate monetary policies in face of economic difficulties and challenges, like ailing exports and industrial overcapacity.     Wen's stance echoed Zhu Zhixin, vice minister in charge of the NDRC, who underscored on Friday that there would be no change in China's macro-economic policy as the overseas market was still severe.     He warned that any change in the macro-economic policy would disturb the recovery or rebound momentum, or even perish the previous efforts and achievements.     "Efforts to keep a stable and fast economic development is the top priority of the country in the second half," he said.
