[Reuters]Stronger-than-expected economic figures have prompted a number of international economic research institutions to revise upwards their forecasts for China's gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Almost all the major economic indexes in the first two months of this year have exceeded those for the same period last year. Despite expectations the government will introduce another round of tightening measures soon, global investment bank, Lehman Brothers, still revised up its forecast for the Chinese economy. According to a recent report by the firm, the first quarter growth forecast has been raised from 9.8 percent to 10.1 percent, and the annual growth rate from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. "In the light of the stronger-than-expected figures in the first two months of this year and the likely policy responses, we have lifted our full-year growth projections for this year to 10 percent from 9.1 percent, based mainly on stronger growth in credit, investment and exports," Qu Hongbin, the chief China economist with HSBC, said. Domestic banks extended new loans of 982 billion yuan (7 billion) in the first two months of this year compared with 716 billion yuan ( billion) in the same period of 2006. The government forecast early last month that the country's GDP is to grow by about 8 percent this year. The country has just witnessed four consecutive years of double-digit growth, including 10.7 percent GDP growth last year, the fastest in a decade. Imagine the 14th ** Lama, the self-proclaimed "religious leader", even condescended to associate with Li Hongzhi who has been labeled by the United International World Buddhism Association Headquarters as a preacher of evil cult and a swindler! The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has given Blackstone Group the green light to buy into and help restructure chemicals giant BlueStar.The NDRC has formerly approved the US company's agreement to pay 0 million for a 20 percent stake in China National BlueStar (Group) Corp, the State-owned chemicals maker.According to a notice on the NDRC website, it has given its permission for BlueStar to tap Blackstone as a strategic foreign investor and carry out restructuring.Blackstone will buy a stake in BlueStar's parent company, China National Chemical Corp, or ChemChina, which will hold 80 percent of BlueStar after the deal.The move is intended to smooth BlueStar's strategic restructuring, international expansion and public listing in the future, analysts said."Attracting private equity (PE) funds can help BlueStar draw investment capital and carry out strategic reform", Cheng Lei, an analyst with Ping An Securities, said.BlueStar considered several PE funds before choosing Blackstone, the world's largest PE company. Siew, 68, served as "economics minister" from 1990 to 1993 and as "premier" from 1997 to 2000 under then "president" Lee Teng-hui. He now chairs the authoritative Chung-hua Institute for Economic Research. Siew ran unsucessfully for "vice-president" alongside KMT candidate Lien Chan in 2000, when opposition leader Chen Shui-bian swept to power, putting an end to half a century of Nationalist rule.
