BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Sunday stressed the importance of nurturing more first-class financial personnel for the nation.     Liu made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) to convey congratulations on its 60th founding anniversary.     CUFE is the first university specialized in financial and economic studies established by the People's Republic of China. It is one of the 100 universities to which the Chinese government attaches top priority in the 21st Century.     Noting that finance is an important state function, and the core of modern economy, Liu expected the university to play a better role in cultivating innovation-oriented financial talents.     She also called on the university to contribute more to the national and local development programs.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Goni has brought huge rainfall to south China after it landed early Wednesday morning in Taishan of south China's Guangdong Province.     Downpours drenched most parts of Guangdong and neighboring Fujian province, with a hydrological station in Guangdong reporting precipitation of about 400 mm.     The weakening Goni is moving westward slowing and is expected to bring downpours to west Guangdong from Thursday to Friday.     Maritime affairs department in the southern island province of Hainan said Tuesday that it had issued an emergency warning to 20,000 fishing vessels in the South China Sea, calling them to harbor.     Another tropical storm, Morakot, has strengthened into typhoon and is expected to make a landfall from late Friday to Saturday in central and northern Fujian, weather forecasters said.     Local authorities have put in place emergency plans to evacuate residents amid other efforts to reduce losses from Morakot, the 8th typhoon this year.     Severe rainstorms also wreak havoc in other parts of the country Wednesday.     In Suichuan, eastern Jiangxi province, flash flood washed down five houses and killed at least three people.     Rain-related disasters also killed two in the southwestern Guizhou province and another two in neighboring Chongqing municipality.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Renowned Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin was cremated here on Sunday.     Chinese leaders including Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun and Li Keqiang attended his cremation ceremony. "I even couldn't help crying when I saw the fireworks portraying a train running on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway lighted the Tian'anmen Square."     Senior Chinese can still remember another touching scene on the evening of the National Day in 1966 when Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, surrounded by a crowd of civilians, sat on the cold ground of the Golden Water Bridge in front of the Tian'anmen Rostrum to enjoy watching the fireworks show with beaming faces.     Behind the close relationship between CPC leaders and the people is the "Mass Line," the fundamental work method of the CPC, which means "all for the masses, all rely on the masses" and "from the masses, to the masses." BUCHAREST, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived here on Sunday to start his official visit to Romania after he concluded a visit to Hungary.     In a written statement upon his arrival at the airport, Xi said China and Romania have enjoyed long-term friendship, and they have enhanced political trust, cooperation in various areas, and coordination in dealing with international affairs since they forged diplomatic ties six decades ago.     Noting that the Chinese government values relations with Romania, Xi said his visit was to cement traditional friendship and reciprocal cooperation by taking the chance of 60th anniversary of bilateral ties. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Several hundred former generals, famous military artists, and soldiers gathered at the foot of the Great Wall Saturday to celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which falls on August 1.     At the ceremony organized by the China Great Wall Society (CGWS), veterans recited a poem telling their love and wishes for the country and the people.     Lieutenant General Shao Huaze, vice chairman of the CGWS, said the peom was written based on the wishes collected from the veterans.     The CGWS also held an exhibition of more than 500 calligraphy and painting works by former generals.

LANZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has written a congratulatory letter to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lanzhou University in northwest China's Gansu Province.     The university has been sticking to its motto of making constant efforts to become stronger and fostering its own features, and has developed glorious patriotic and academic traditions, Hu said in the letter.     After the founding of New China and particularly the country's reform and opening up, Lanzhou University has shared the fate of the nation and kept pace with the times, and made important contribution to the economic and social development in the western regions, the president said.     He expected the university to contribute more to supporting the national program of developing the western regions, building an innovation-oriented country and a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, and stepping up the socialist modernization drive.     A grand gathering was held Saturday to commemorate the centenary of the university. XIAMEN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- China remains the most attractive country for foreign capital, despite that the country's foreign direct investment declined for ten straight months, a commerce official said Wednesday.     "China has been the top destination for foreign capital for 17 consecutive years," Wang Chao, assistant commerce minister, said at the World Capital Forum in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.     A report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on July 22 showed that China stands first on the list of five most attractive destinations for foreign capital, followed by the United States, India, Brazil, and Russia.     The country has received 48.3 billion U.S. dollars of foreign direct investment (FDI) from January to July this year, down 20.3 percent over the same time last year amid a global economic downturn, Wang said.     Wang said the country's prospects for overseas investment remains optimistic as it would simplify examination and approval procedures toward foreign investors.     It will also guide foreign investment to go to high technology industry, advanced manufacturing industry, energy saving and environment protection industries, in a bid to optimize investment structures.
