BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday called on police in Beijing to continue efforts in protecting public stability in the capital city, especially in areas near the Tian'anmen Square.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with representatives from Beijing's special police forces, traffic police, and armed police who were stationed in the Tian'anmen Square. BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and the European Union (EU) should properly cope with trade frictions, and push forward economic and trade cooperation, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said here Wednesday.     Wang was meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton, who is on her first visit to China.     "China and the EU should appropriately handle trade frictions, and fight resolutely against trade protectionism," he said.     Since late July, the EU has launched a series of anti-dumping actions against Chinese products, covering steel wire rod, seamless steel tubes, sodium gluconate, steel cables and aluminum road wheels.     "Some of China's major trading partners have shown signs of protectionism during the global financial crisis, and there has been rising trade protectionism inside the EU," said Sun Yongfu, who is department chief in charge of European affairs of Chinese Commerce Ministry.     Vice premier Wang said the two sides' top priorities at the present time should be making efforts to continuously further coordination and cooperation, jointly tiding over the global financial crisis, and facilitating the recovery of regional and international economy. Bilateral trade volume reached 425.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.     During her visit, Ashton was scheduled to meet with Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, and attend the 13th China International Fair for Investment and Trade in Xiamen city of southeast Fujian Province.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday pledged to further assist the development of other developing countries when addressing the UN General Assembly during its the general debate.     "As a responsible and major developing country, China has always made common development an important aspect of its foreign policy," Hu said in his speech.     "We have made great efforts to provide support and assistance to other developing countries, and fulfilled our commitment under the UN Millennium Declaration," he said.     To further assist other developing countries, the Chinese president said, China will increase support for those hit hard by the global financial crisis, earnestly implement relevant capital increase and financing plans, intensify trade and investment cooperation and help raise their capacity for risk-resistance and sustainable development.     "China will continue to implement the measures announced at the UN High-level Event on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to assist other developing countries in speeding up development and facilitate the attainment of the MDGs," he added. NANJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- An antiwar cartoon exhibition displaying works by 110 Japanese artists opened in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing Saturday to mark the 64th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.     The exhibition, jointly organized by the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre and the Japanese non-governmental association of "My Aug. 15," will last three moths.     About 160 cartoon works will be displayed, the first time the exhibition is held outside Japan, the organizers said.     Most of the authors of the cartoons were born before Aug. 15, 1945 and had deep memories about the war. In addition, many of them lived in different parts of China with their parents at that time and learned of the news of Japan's surrender in China. Many years later, they produced a group of works with the theme of "My Aug. 15," conveying their condemnation about the war atrocities and reflection on the militaristic brutality.     The exhibition was divided into four parts according to the authors' ages when Japan surrendered, "above 16," "8-15," "5-7" and "below four."     Nine prestigious Japanese cartoonists, along with about 100 people from several Japanese NGOs, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition Saturday.     "It tells a true story," said 70-year-old artist Kenji Morita, pointing to his own work "Thanks to Adoptive Chinese Parents."     "Although Japan was an invader, many Chinese parents still helped raise Japanese children orphaned by the war," he said.     Leading Japanese manga artist Tetsuya Chiba also recalled the war past he experienced in China.     "I was in Shenyang (capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province) the day when Japan's surrender in World War II was announced by the late Emperor Hirohito over radio. I was only six then, and I couldn't really understand what happened," Chiba told Xinhua.     "I didn't manage to return to Japan immediately, so I spent a very hard year in China after Japan's surrender. But I met a very nice Chinese couple, they gave me food even when they didn't have enough to eat. When we separated, they gave me a blanket. I kept the blanket for years until I met their offspring," he said.     "Aug. 15 is a meaningful day for both China and Japan, whether to mark the victory or to introspect the war. The day reminds us to be against wars," he added.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday urged Communist Party members and government officials to exert more efforts to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on better implementation of the theory.     He said after the first and second round of the theory implementation work, progress has been made in solving problems, institutional innovation and Party's working style building.     He urged Party members and government officials to better deal with social contradiction and disputes and further strengthen the social security work.     Xi also pointed out the third-round learning would mainly be held at towns, villages, communities, hospitals, and primary and secondary schools.     About 1.22 million grass-roots Party organizations with nearly 40 million members will join the third round learning work.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday urged more efforts to push forward the rejuvenation of the country's northeast and other traditional industrial bases.     Great progress has been made in the regions since China launched the rejuvenation move more than five years ago, said attendees at a meeting of the leading group of the State Council, the Cabinet, for revitalizing the northeast and other old industrial bases. The rejuvenation strategy of old industrial bases mainly covers regions including Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces and the northeastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese merchants will be allowed to retrieve their goods in a closed Moscow market, the head of a Chinese coordination group said on Thursday.     A Chinese coordination group on Thursday discussed with Moscow's consumer department the clearing up of Chinese merchants' stalls in the Cherkizovsky market as well as the transferring of their goods.     The Russian side agreed to take further steps to safeguard the market's order and to work with the Chinese side to crack down on the illegal activities, said Cai Guiru, head of the temporary Chinese coordination group and chairperson of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Russia.     It is agreed that Chinese merchants will be allowed to clean up their stalls and ship out their merchandise during a specific period of time every day, Cai said.     The Russian side took "sincere and earnest" attitudes towards the handling of the market closure, in the hope that most of the Chinese merchants will be able to retrieve their goods safely, she said.     This meeting is helpful and the Russian side heard positive opinions from Chinese vendors, said Georgy Smoleyevcky, first deputy head of the Moscow Consumer Market and Services Department.     The Russian side will make conclusions accordingly and give instructions to relevant departments, he said, expressing the hope that complaints from Chinese traders will be less and less in future.     The official also dismissed the speculation that a Chinese shopping mall will be built in the place of the closed Cherkizovsky, Russia's biggest wholesale market.     The coordination group, formed under the auspices of the Chinese embassy in Russia in July, involves heads of China's provincial chambers of commerce.     Russian police abruptly shut down the nearly 300-hectare market in northeastern Moscow on June 29, after the disclosure of various illegal and irregular operations in the market by the Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare.     A Chinese senior delegation, led by Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, reached broad consensus with the Russian side on the closure issue.
