BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. He wished the Chinese government and people a speedy recovery from the disaster.     On the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, Hu said China appreciated Venezuela's generous support while Chavez said the successes of hosting the two games would go down in history.     Stressing both China and Venezuela stayed at an important stage, Hu said the two countries shared the goal of stepping up substantive cooperation and seeking common prosperity.     To advance the bilateral strategic partnership, Hu proposed the two countries keep the high-level visits, enhance dialogues between the governments, legislatures and ruling parties, and exchange views on issues of common concern.     On the economic front, Hu said China would like to deepen "all-phase and integrated" oil cooperation with Venezuela, encourage businesses to invest in Venezuela and establish a trade zone.     China will also participate in building Venezuela's infrastructures, including railway system, telecommunications network, social housing and hydro-power.     Hu also called on the two countries to work more closely in education, culture, science and technology, justice, sports, journalism and poverty eradication.     Sharing Hu's view on bilateral ties, Chavez said bilateral trade had progressed smoothly, citing remarkable progress in oil, agriculture, science and infrastructure.     Chave said Venezuela would like to work closely with China on stronger political ties, increased dialogues and more substantive cooperation in energy, finance, agriculture and machinery.     On international issues, Hu and Chavez agreed to step up communication and consultation in multi-lateral organizations and on global issues, so as to safeguard the reasonable rights of developing countries.     Earlier Wednesday, top Chinese legislator Wu Banguo also met with Chavez. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.

GENEVA -- The Tibet issue is not an ethnic issue, not a religious issue, nor a human rights issue, but an issue either to safeguard national unification or to split the motherland, a Chinese diplomat said in Geneva on Friday."The Tibet issue is entirely an internal issue of China which concerns the country's sovereignty," said Qian Bo, counsellor of the Chinese Mission to the UN Office in Geneva.The diplomat was addressing a regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, during which some delegates made biased comments on the so-called human rights situation in Tibet.Those delegates' comments were "an evident act of politicizing human rights and practicing double standards," said Qian.Qian stressed that the human rights situation in Tibet had improved continuously since its peaceful liberation in 1951.He said Tibetans are now enjoying full religious freedom and their traditional culture has also been carried forward."The progress and achievements made in Tibet are facts that cannot be written off by lies and libels," he said.The diplomat stressed that the violent crimes committed in March in Lhasa, the capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, were mastermind and incited by the ** clique aimed at splitting the motherland.The riot has nothing to do with human rights, so China cannot accept any unreasonable accusations, he said.The diplomat also urged the Human Rights Council to avoid politicizing human rights and remove double standards in order to maintain its prestige and credibility.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt here Monday. Both agreed to deepen cooperation.     During their talks, Wen said as the first western country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China 58 years ago, Sweden and China have continued to increase mutual trust and understanding, as well as expand cooperation in all areas.     The recent years, in particular, have seen rapid growth in bilateral trade volume, said Wen, noting that China has become the largest trade partner for Sweden in Asia. He has just finished his attendance in the year's annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in China's Sanya, a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world.

TOKYO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea agreed here Saturday to strengthen trilateral cooperation for better political, economic and cultural relations.     Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung Hwan reached the agreement at the second trilateral meeting of foreign ministers from the three countries. LHASA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake followed by some 1,000 aftershocks has affected more than 60,000 people in the Tibet Autonomous Region this week, the local government said in a news conference Saturday.     Since Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake struck Damxung County in Lhasa, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been monitored, including one that measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, said Gong Puguang, vice president of the regional government.     61,231 people in the region's capital have been affected and 989 houses collapsed, said Gong.     More than 4,800 people have been relocated out of the quake zone.     The quake-hit areas include Lhasa, Xigaze and Shannan regions, where 28 km of road and 11 bridges were damaged.     So far, ten people have been confirmed dead. 54 others sustained injuries, one third of those injuries are serious.     The central government allocated 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars), 11,000 tents, quilts, and other quake relief materials to the affected area.     The items were being distributed as traffic and telecommunication resumed in the area.     The local government is evaluating economic losses from the disaster.     Seismologists predict more aftershocks will hit the county but the force is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. More than 1,000 out of the 18,000 population in Leigu Town died or were missing in the quake. UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Thursday urged the international community, especially developed nations, to speed up intensive efforts to realize the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     CHINA'S CONTRIBUTION     Wen made the calls in his address to the UN high-level event on the MDGs. He told the meeting China has honored its commitments to the MDGs by dramatically reducing the number of Chinese living in poverty and by providing assistance to least developed countries.     China, the most populous country in the world, has accelerated development mainly through its own efforts and through reform and opening-up since 1978, and has "brought down the number of people in absolute poverty from 250 million to 15 million in less than 30 years," he said.     The nation's free compulsory education, medical care for 800 million farmers, and governance at various levels have all witnessed substantial progress, the Chinese premier said. It has also trained 15,000 African medical professionals, sent medical teams and provided free medicines to Africa, he added. The first and foremost development goal should be economic, with educational, cultural and social development also high on the agenda, he added.     He urged respect for the right of all countries to choose their own development paths suited to their national conditions, and called for efforts to resolve regional conflicts and ethnic strife through peaceful means.     On international assistance in eliminating poverty, Wen said developed countries in particular should assume the responsibility of helping underdeveloped countries.     "Assistance should be provided selflessly, with no strings attached. It is particularly important to increase assistance for least developed countries and regions," he said.     Wen proposed that donor countries double their donations to the World Food Programme in the next five years and that the international community do more to cancel or reduce debts owed by least developed countries and provide zero-tariff treatment to their exports.     Efforts should also be made to improve the working mechanisms for the development goals in the Millennium Declaration and coordinate the functions of international organizations to jointly overcome the difficulties facing developing countries, he proposed. Ninety-five percent of products from these countries will also enjoy zero-tariff treatment in the Chinese market, the premier said.     China will also increase agricultural technology support and provide more agricultural training opportunities for developing countries, he said.     Over the next five years, developing countries will get 10,000 more scholarships from China, along with some training programs provided exclusively for African teachers. China will also fully staff and equip the hospitals it builds for African countries and help train their medical staff.     Also in the next five years, China will develop 100 small-scale clean energy projects for developing countries, including small hydropower, solar power and bio-gas projects, the premier said.     Wen arrived in New York Tuesday morning for a three-day visit. He attended the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly Wednesday as well as Thursday's UN MDGs summit meeting, and held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and leaders of some countries.
