BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- China would deepen economic and trade cooperation and step up strategic and mutually beneficial relations with Japan, Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Sunday.     "China hopes the two sides would work together to enhance economic and trade cooperation, aiming at realizing mutual benefit and development," Hu told members of a delegation from the Japan-China Association on Economy and Trade (JCAET).     JCAET honorary president Fujio Mitarai and president Fujio Cho congratulated China on the success of the Olympics and Paralympic Games, and expressed willingness to push forward bilateral ties.     Hu expressed gratitude for Japanese aid after the Sichuan earthquake and for supporting the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, praising the JCAET for "important contributions to the improvement and development of bilateral ties". BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao inspected the southern province of Hainan before attending the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) opening on Saturday.     The forum, April 11-13, is a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world. Boao has been the permanent venue of the annual regional economic forum since 2001.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, discussed reform and development issues with local officials and visited with a public made up of various ethnic groups during the inspection tour that started on Monday.     The island province marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Hainan special economic zone (SEZ) later this month. Hu visited an exhibition marking the anniversary at the provincial museum.     "Over the past two decades, Hainan's economic and social development has made a remarkable progress. The appearance of cities and villages has undergone profound changes. Practice shows the policy of setting up SEZ in Hainan is completely correct," said the president. The throughput of the harbor, launched in 1990, reached 4.27 million tons in 2007.     Hu encouraged officials and workers to seize the regional economic cooperation opportunity. BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing global financial turbulence will have a limited impact on China's banks and financial system in the short run, according to officials and experts.     "We feel China's financial system and its banks are, to the chaos developed in the U.S. and other parts of the world, relatively shielded from those problems," said senior economist Louis Kuijs at the World Bank Beijing Office.     He told Xinhua one reason was that Chinese banks were less involved in the highly sophisticated financial transactions and products.     "They were lucky not to be so-called developed, because this (financial crisis) is very much a developed market crisis." Farmers harvest rice in 850 farm in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Sept. 26, 2008.    A few Chinese lenders were subject to losses from investing in foreign assets involved in the Wall Street crisis, but the scope and scale were small and the banks had been prepared for possible risks, Liu Fushou, deputy director of the Banking Supervision Department I of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, told China Central Television (CCTV).     Chinese banks had only invested 3.7 percent of their total wealth in overseas assets that were prone to international tumult, CCTV reported. The ratio of provisions to possible losses had exceeded 110 percent at large, state owned listed lenders, 120 percent at joint stock commercial banks and 200 percent at foreign banks.     Kuijs noted most of the banks resided in China where capital control made it more difficult to move money in and out. Besides, the country's large foreign reserves prevented the financial system from a lack of liquidity, which was troubling the strained international markets.     "At times like this, one cannot rule out anything," he said. "But still we believe the economic development and economic fundamentals in China are such that it's not easy to foresee a significant direct impact on the financial system."     However, he expected an impact on China's banks coming via the country's real economy, as exports, investment and plans of companies would be affected by the troubled world economy and in turn increase pressure on bad loans.     Wang Xiaoguang, a Beijing-based macro-economist, said the growing risks on global markets would render a negative effect on China in the short term but provided an opportunity for the country to fuel its growth more on domestic demand than on external needs.     He urged while China, the world's fastest expanding economy, should be more cautious of fully opening up its capital account, the government should continue its market reforms on the domestic financial industry without being intimidated.     Chinese banks had strengthened the management of their investments in overseas liquid assets and taken a more prudent strategy in foreign currency-denominated investment products since the U.S.-born financial crisis broke out, CCTV reported.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee recently held a forum to solicit opinions and suggestions from non-Communist personages on the documents of its latest plenary session held late last week.     CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao briefed the leaders of the non-Communist parties, leaders of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and persons without party affiliation on what was considered when forming the document. He asked them to raise suggestions on its revision.     Some delegates made remarks, approving the summary made by the CPC Central Committee on the experiences of the 30 years of rural reform and development and supporting the guideline thinking, objectives, principles and measures of rural reform and development.     They raised suggestions on the overall plan of urban and rural development, farmland protection, grain security, spread of agricultural technology and rural financial system reform, as well as on deepening cross-Strait agricultural exchanges and cooperation and improving grassroots democracy.     After hearing the opinions, Hu said the suggestions were valuable and reflected the in-depth thinking of the participants. Relevant departments would conscientiously study and adopt them.     He added China was an agricultural country with the majority of its population in rural areas. Addressing issues on agriculture, the countryside and farmers would be taken as the fundamental work.     Since China launched its reform and opening up, the CPC Central Committee had held many plenary sessions to discuss agricultural and rural issues.     Facing new situations and tasks, the rural development system should be continually innovated, Hu said, adding rural reform remained the key to China's reform, and agriculture and rural development were still the strategic foundation of the country's development.     Promoting rural reform and development would bring the national economy and society into a new round of development, he added.     Hu asked the participants in the forum to contribute to the new socialist countryside construction by make in-depth study, identify and handle the protruding problems in rural reform and development in a timely manner, and raise relevant suggestions accordingly.     Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin and Xi Jinping, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the forum.     On Sunday, the CPC Central Committee approved a decision on major issues concerning rural reform and development at the close of a four-day meeting, such as doubling the income of rural residents, boosting their consumption by a big margin and basically eliminating absolute poverty in rural areas by 2020.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The world's widest tunnel with an inner diameter of 13.7 meters completed its excavation here under the Yangtze River on Friday.     The 8.9-km tunnel is part of a 12.6 billion yuan (1.84 billion U.S. dollars) bridge and tunnel project to link Shanghai with Chongming Island, the country's third largest after Taiwan and Hainan.     The tunnel will accommodate a six-lane expressway and a rail line. When operational in 2010, travel to Chongming from urban Shanghai will take 20 minutes, according to Yu Xuanping, vice general manager of the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd, builder of the tunnel.     The company used a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 15.43 meters, the largest of its kind, to excavate under the Yangtze.     The tunnel and bridge project would make the transport networkson the southern and northern sides of the river more closely connected, said Wu Liangyong, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician.     The tunnel connects Shanghai's vast Pudong District with Changxing Island in the Yangtze, while the bridge connects Changxing and Chongming.     Currently, Chongming is connected with Jiangsu Province to its north.     Located at the Yangtze River mouth, Chongming covers an area of1,200 sq. km, equal to about 20 percent of Shanghai's total land area.     China's central government plans to turn the island into a model of an eco-friendly town in the country. Shanghai municipal government is also paying great attention, with infrastructure projects being built within the island.     Experts said the inconvenient traffic between Shanghai and Chongming once blocked the development of the island. The construction of the bridge and tunnel would help attract overseas investment and make the suburb a major channel of the Yangtze River Delta area.
