ISLAMABAD, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani met respectively with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday and reiterated their resolve to improve bilateral ties to a new level.     They said Pakistan will always stand with China on the Taiwan and Tibet issues and Beijing Olympics will be a great success. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday visited hospitals, communities and supermarkets in Beijing to see for himself the infants sickened by tainted milk powder and the milk market. His first stop was Beijing Children's Hospital, where many parents had brought their children for kidney tests.     Outside the consulting room, ultrasonic scan room and medical wards, Wen asked parents and children how they were faring. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. More than 3.46 million houses were wracked, Li said.     Li said he was deeply saddened by the super earthquake. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The latest tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine, the country's top quality control agency said on Saturday.     It was the ninth investigation on the industrial chemical following the tainted baby formula scandal that killed at least three infants and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).     The latest tests covered 532 batches of liquid milk, including yogurt, from 69 brands in 23 major cities nationwide, the agency said.     At present, 4,213 batches of liquid dairy products from 131 brands produced after Sept. 14 were tested and all in line with the limit, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.     China on Wednesday set temporary limits on melamine content in dairy products. The limits were a maximum of 1 mg of melamine per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products containing at least 15 percent milk.     The State Council, or Cabinet, issued a series of quality control regulations for dairy products on Thursday.     The regulations tighten control of how milk-yielding animals are bred, how raw milk is purchased and the production and sales of dairy food.     They promised more severe punishment for people who violated safety standards and quality control departments that failed to fulfil their duties.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will work diligently to maintain an effective and smooth communication channel with citizens who want to submit complaints, a senior Party official said here on Tuesday.     "We should try to adopt every open, convenient and easy method to guarantee the public's right to express their requests to the government," said Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a video tele-conference on government officials receiving citizens and visiting grassroots people.     In the past nine months, asked by the central government, senior officials of the city, county and district governments met with ordinary citizens in person regularly, listening to their requests and complaints and helping solve their problems. They also paid more frequent visits to grassroots people.     "Their work eased serious problems that were closely related to people's interests and threatened social stability," Zhou said. "Their visits at grassroots levels contributed to the implementation and improvement of central government policies."     The country will formulate the measures into a system and continue improving them, he said. Supervision will be tightened upon the implementation of the measures.     "Senior officials of local governments will receive serious penalty according to laws and Party disciplines if problems and conflicts worsen and linger because they ignore people's requests, harm their rights and interests, breach their duty."     Officials were also urged to well inform people about expressing their requests through legal and rational ways.     Governments at all levels should adopt a scientific and democratic way of decision making, pay more attention to public service and try to prevent new problems from emerging, Zhou said.     They should also find out the cause and solution to existing problems, he said. "They should focus on well solving people's legal requests timely."
