WASHINGTON: A team of researchers found there is not much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking, when you actually count the words. The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students in the United States and Mexico for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day. The score: Women, 16,215; Men, 15,669. The difference: 546 words: "Not statistically significant," say the researchers in Friday's edition of the journal Science. "What's a 500-word difference, compared with the 45,000-word difference between the most and the least talkative persons" in the study, Matthias R. Mehl, an assistant psychology professor at the University of Arizona, who led the research, said. CHONGQING -- A bus fire that killed 27 people in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Tuesday had been an arson attack, local police said on Wednesday.Xiao Yonghua, a former employee of the company that operates the ill-fated Yutong bus, hid gasoline in his baggage before he got on the bus that left Wansheng district for downtown Chongqing at around 5:00 pm on Tuesday, said Wang Yunsheng, deputy head of the municipal public security bureau.In less than 20 minutes, the bus carrying 38 people caught fire. The driver pulled over, and the panic-stricken passengers tried to flee. But the flames started in the front of the bus and blocked the exit.Twenty-seven were killed in the accident, including 17 men and 10 women, and the remaining 11 people were injured.One passenger, Zhang Dazhong, said he had to jump out of the window to survive but was injured on the head.Xiao, 50, was sitting with his wife, 38-year-old Zhang Xiaoya, in the first row on the left side of the bus, right behind the driver, said Wang.Both died in the fire.Lab work has confirmed the presence of gasoline traces on their seats.Until September 20, Xiao was deputy manager of the Wansheng branch of the Guanzhong Public Transport Company that owned the bus.He was suspended from his post because of family disputes, and was unhappy with the punishment, the company said.The Ministry of Public Security sent experts to join the investigation in Chongqing.Hospital sources said the 11 injured are out of danger.By 5:00 pm Wednesday, 26 of the dead have been identified by their families.

The first national-level association of Taiwan-funded enterprises held its inaugural ceremony in Beijing yesterday - a move which experts say will help boost cross-Straits economic integration and peace. "Taiwan business people are all over the mainland now," said Chang Han-wen, the newly-elected chairman of the Association of Taiwanese-invested Enterprises on the Mainland. According to conservative estimates, there are at least 1 million Taiwan business people on the mainland. The national-level association, comprising heads of Taiwan enterprise associations and representatives of Taiwan enterprises on the mainland, aims to serve the island's enterprises, protect their legal rights, boost relations with the ministries in Beijing and strengthen communication with mainland firms. Chen Yunlin, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the island has chalked up a huge trade surplus with the mainland and its trade with the mainland has become an indispensable driving force of Taiwan's economy. "The mainland market provides huge potential for the expansion and industrial upgrading of Taiwan enterprises," he said. Xu Shiquan, vice-chairman of the National Society of Taiwan Studies, said that the establishment of the association coincides with the mushrooming of Taiwan-funded enterprises on the mainland. "Besides their number and scale, more and more Taiwan enterprises are keen to upgrade their industrial structure into the hi-tech sector," he said. "Though they usually forge local associations, faster expansion and a larger scale require a higher level of coordination," he said. Visiting US Chief of Naval Operations Mike Mullen reaffirmed in Beijing on Tuesday that the United States will not support Taiwan independence and will adhere to the one-China policy."The United States will not support Taiwan independence or any unilateral move toward that direction on the part of Taiwan," Mullen told reporters at a press conference.As a guest of Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy commander Wu Shengli, Mullen arrived in China on August 17 for a friendly visit. Reduced bank deposits by Chinese households suggest that a large amount of money is being invested in the capital market, according to the central bank. Household deposits decreased by 167.4 billion yuan (.7 billion) in April.
