BEIJING, June 29 -- Chinese listed banks, which have lent record high amounts in the first half, are likely to report lower profit growth in the period due to narrowing interest spreads and higher provisioning requirements, industry analysts said.     "We are expecting a 7 to 8 percent year-on-year profit fall among the 14 listed banks in the first half-year," said Wang Liwen, banking analyst with Shanghai-based Guotai Junan Securities Co, citing stretched interest spreads as the major reason.     In 2008, the net interest rate spread for banks ranged from 2.45 percentage points to 3.62 percentage points, with the average figure hovering around 3 percentage points. This year, as the government cut interest rates several times to spur economic growth amid the global financial crisis, the net interest rate spread is expected to be lower, at around 2.36 percentage points. Clients walk into the Suzhou branch of Bank of Ningbo in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, March 27, 2009.The bank, the first listed lender to file a mid-term report, said its first-half profits would drop nearly 5 percent from a year earlier    "A drop of 0.7 percentage points in the average net interest rate spread could mean some 7-billion-yuan decrease in the interest yield for each trillion yuan of new loans," said Wang.     Chinese banks extended a record 7.37 trillion yuan of new loans in the first half, triple the amount offered in the same period a year earlier and 47 percent more than the government's full-year target, after lending restrictions were eased in November to stem an economic slowdown.     However, most securities firms' reports said the country's 14 listed banks might post an average profit decrease ranging from 6 percent to 10 percent year-on-year in the first six months.     According to Wind Info, a financial data provider, the 14 listed banks reported a net profit of 232.7 billion yuan in the first half of 2008, an increase of 73 percent year-on-year. But this year, the net profit could probably stand at 210 billion yuan, down 10 percent on a yearly basis.     Bank of Ningbo, for instance, on July 14 announced no more than a 5-percent decease in net profit in its pre-released semi-annual report to the Shenzhen bourse. It is the first Chinese listed bank to report a profit fall in the first half.     Wang Yifeng, an analyst at TX Investment Consulting, said the improved provision coverage ratio requirement might also cripple profits at listed banks.     To prevent potential risks arising from the lending spree, China Banking Regulatory Commission raised the minimum provision coverage ratio requirement to 150 percent from 130 percent earlier this year.     "The increase will mainly eat into the profits of several large State-controlled banks as they are still not up to the new requirements," said Wang.     But as the squeezed spreads bottom out in the second half, most analysts said listed banks would still post positive growth for the whole year.     "Thanks to the widened interest rate spreads and lower loan cost in the following months, we are expecting a 10-percent growth in profits overall this year," said Liu Yinghua, an analyst with Shenzhen-based Ping An Securities.

URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior government official said Friday the situation in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was under control after local residents had taken to the streets over two days to protest against hypodermic syringe attacks.     There were no major protests in the city Friday, a day after massive protests that left five people dead Thursday, said Executive Deputy Mayor Zhang Hong. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese food and drug regulators are required to report food accidents to their superiors and local health authorities within six hours, according to a government draft regulation Thursday.     The draft, issued by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), demands that once accidents occur involving 30 or more people, food and drug regulators at or above the county level should report them to their superiors and local health authorities within six hours.     With regard to food safety accidents that occur on campuses, during important nationwide festivities, involve 100 people or more, or kill one or more people, food and drug regulators should not only abide by the "six hour regulation," but also report them to the SFDA "in a timely manner," according to the draft.     Catering service runners, should they find food accidents, are asked to immediately stop using all suspicious food and cooking facilities and protect the site. They are also required to report to medical authorities and food regulators at or above the county level within two hours.     The draft regulation also stipulates that heads at schools, companies or government organs will be held accountable if food accidents occur twice in one year in their cafeterias.     The SFDA also asked food and drug regulators at all levels to formulate emergency plans to deal with food accidents based on local conditions.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.

HONG KONG, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bank of China (Hong Kong) said Thursday its half-year profit fell by 5.6 percent from a year earlier, dragged lower by falling interest income amid the deepening economic downturn.     The bank's net profit for the six months ending June 30 amounted to 6.69 billion Hong Kong dollars, down from 7.09 billion Hong Kong dollars in the same period last year.     However, the bank said it represented a major improvement against the net loss of 3.75 billion Hong Kong dollars in the second half of 2008, which can be attributed to the increase in operating income as well as the decrease in impairment charges on securities investments.     Net interest income decreased by 11 percent to 8.93 billion Hong Kong dollars as net interest margin narrowed by 27 basis points to 1.76 percent. But the net fees and commission income grew by 1.7 percent year-on-year to 2.95 billion Hong Kong dollars driven by the rebound of the local stock market in the first half of this year.     The bank's vice chairman and chief executive He Guangbei said the performance in the first half of this year reflected the progress the bank had made in regaining its growth momentum. As the turbulence and its knocks-on effects began to subside, the bank would pursue a prudent yet flexible development strategy in an environment of change and challenge.     He also said BOC (HK) would actively expand the RMB-related banking business as the sole Clearing Bank for Renminbi business in Hong Kong.
