CHENGDU, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has pledged to help its Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to cope with the impact of the ongoing international financial crisis.     It was revealed by Vice Premier Li Keqiang when meeting the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah in Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province on Sunday.     Ho arrived here on Sunday, leading a delegation of the SAR to attend the Ninth Western China International Economy and Trade Fair.     The Vice Premier said the central government would give all-out support to the SAR's Chief Executive and government in administration in line with laws. BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said on Saturday the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no trace of melamine.     It was the seventh round of tests for the industrial chemical since the report of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 105 batches of baby formula from 20 brands in 10 provinces and 161 batches of other milk powder from 52 brands in 15 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 804 batches of baby formula from 66 brands and 1,126 batches of other milk powder from 161 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine.     Earlier on Friday, the agency said the 12th round of tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine.     So far, the quality watchdog had conducted sample tests on 5,797 batches of liquid dairy products manufactured after Sept. 14from 136 brands and found all safely under the limit.     Last week, the government set temporary melamine content limits in dairy products of a maximum of 1 mg per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products that contained at least 15 percent milk.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.

TAIPEI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland's chief negotiator on Taiwan affairs Chen Yunlin said Thursday that complicated historical problems across the Taiwan Strait could well be resolved through mutual trust.     Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), told a banquet, held in the island's landmark Grand Hotel, that problems could be settled as long as the two sides made concerted efforts with "kindness and wisdom" to create conditions and firstly solve economic and livelihood problems closely linked with public interests.     Chen was grateful for the considerate arrangement and warm and friendly service on the part of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) over the past four days.     He was on a five-day visit to the island starting Monday for economic talks with the SEF, which was the first meeting held in the island between the ARATS and the SEF. The two signed historical deals concerning direct shipping, flights and postal services. BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is in good shape despite the changing economic environment, and it will maintain stable and relatively fast growth, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) chief Ma Jiantang told Xinhua on Sunday.     "The fundamentals of China's economy remain unchanged despite the changing world economic environment," the new NBS director said. "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook."     The world's fastest economic growth rate, successful commodity price controls, increasing foreign exchange reserves and good employment rates were the factors to support the economic fundamentals, said Ma.     The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, eased to 4.6 percent in September from the same period last year. It hit a 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.9 percent in the first three quarters, 2.3 percentage points down from the same period last year.     The slowdown was a result of combined effects, including the global financial crisis, the world economic downturn and severe domestic natural disasters, Ma said.     However, he said, "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook." The country had rich resource reserves, great market potential, vigorous enterprises and the government had strong macro-control abilities.     The government had made a series of macro-economic policy adjustments against the changing economic environment, which would guarantee a steady and sound economic development, he said.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China called on the international community here on Friday to honor its commitment of aid to Iraq so as to help speed up its process of reconstruction and development.     La Yuefan, minister counselor from the Chinese mission to the United Nations, said at the Security Council meeting on the situation concerning Iraq that for progress in security and political fields to be effectively consolidated, economic and social reconstruction must also move ahead.     In this regard, "we call upon the international community to truly honor its commitment of aid to Iraq by helping Iraq speed up its process of reconstruction and development," La said, adding that China supports the meeting of foreign ministers of neighboring countries and other mechanisms playing a bigger role.     China also hopes that the Iraqi government will continue to lead all factions to agree on the common vision for the future of the country by placing national interests above everything else and strengthening dialogue and unity, La said.     "We encourage UNAMI (the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq) to continue its positive role in this regard. We believe it is essential to promote political dialogue and national reconciliation of Iraq in order to consolidate the progress already achieved in various fields," the Chinese diplomat said.     Noting that right now the process of peace and recovery in Iraqis at a critical juncture, La said China welcomes the continuous progress achieved by Iraq in the political, security and recovery fields.     However, he pointed out that the overall security situation in Iraq remained fragile.     "We are especially concerned about the large number of civilian casualties caused by military operations and violent attacks," La said.     "We call once again upon the parties concerned to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties while carrying out military operations," he said.

Workplace injury and childbirth insurance have to be paid by employers.     A series of social insurance fund embezzlement scandals have been exposed in China since 1998. More than 16 billion yuan (about2.3 billion U.S. dollars) was embezzled.     The new social insurance law's draft said any individual or organization has a right to complain or report illegalities about the social insurance fund. The measure is an endeavor to invite more supervision of the citizen's basic security.     The draft also determined that a new type of rural medical system, in which farmers and governments raise funds together, would be included in the medical insurance.     Governments will cover medical insurance expenses for citizens who live on low-income subsidies, have serious disabilities or are older than 60 years, the draft said.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- An artistic performance was staged in Beijing on Monday night to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of late Chinese leader Liu Shaoqi.     Li Changchun and Vice President Xi Jinping, who are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, watched the performance together with more than 2,000 people of various walks of life in the National Center for the Performing Arts.     The performance was composed of five parts to show Liu's dedication and contribution to the cause of the Party and the people in different revolution and construction periods.     Liu was born on Nov. 24, 1898, in Ningxiang County of Hunan Province, central China. He was one of the earliest members of the CPC, joining the Party in 1921, shortly after its founding. In the following years, he served at many important positions in the Party.     Liu was elected vice chairman of the central people's government in September 1949, just before the founding of New China. Later he was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. In April 1959, he was elected chairman of the People's Republic of China.     Severely persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977), Liu died of illness in Kaifeng of Henan Province on Nov. 12, 1969.
