BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Sirens wailed in a number of Chinese cities Friday to remind people of the Sept. 18 invasion and occupation by Japanese troops in 1931.     "We should not forget the past. The history tells us that we will be beaten if we are week," said Yang Jianhua, a 56-year-old worker who beat the bell at the 9.18 History Museum.     Dozens of cities across China including Harbin, Changchun and Xi'an also sounded the alarms at 9:18 a.m. to remind the people of the humiliating history.     On Sept. 18 in 1931, Shenyang resounded with the noise of cannons and explosions when Japanese forces attacked the barracks of Chinese troops. The move marked the beginning of a Japanese occupation that lasted 14 years.     A history museum in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, opened to the public for free as from Sept. 18. The Museum covers 10,600 square meters with more than 3,000 historical documents and materials.     An exhibition in Beijing displayed 220 photos and 260 items of historical relics on ordinary people's fighting against Japanese troops. The exhibition will run until April 30 in 2010.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China contributed 19.2 percent of the world economic growth in 2007, up from 2.3 percent in 1978, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said. It said China tops the world in contribution to the global economic growth.     The report was the 18th by the NBS. It showcased the improving international status and influence of new China over years of development.     According to the NBS, China's gross domestic product (GDP) was 30 billion U.S. dollars in 1952, more than doubling by 1960, and reached 3.86 trillion U.S. dollars in 2008.     China had also become the world's third largest economy in 2008 by accounting for 6.4 percent of the global GDP.     Meanwhile, the country's gross national income (GNI) per capital has been catching up with the world average. The GNI per capita was 10.1 percent of the world average in 1978, and 32.3 percent in2008.     In terms of GNI per capita ranking among 209 countries and regions by the World Bank, China was 130th in 2008 at 2,770 U.S. dollars, up 15 places compared 750 U.S. dollars in 1997.

There are also ornamental plants and plant structures in the shape of dragon, Great Wall, and all symbols of the country's pride.     The grand military parade scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. Thursday will be the 14th parade since 1949, the year when the People's Republic of China was founded.     The most recent massive parade was in 1999 when New China marked its 50th birthday.     Military parades normally feature a display of formations of the armed forces, as well as new weapons, artillery, tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Chinese steel mills would prefer to import more iron ore from Brazil rather than Australia after the detention of four Shanghai-based employees of multinational miner Rio Tinto on charges of commercial espionage, according to data specialist ASXMarine. But the exact figures would be available only in September as shipments from Brazil and Australia would be delayed by one or two months.     China's main ports received 56.5 million tons of iron ore in July, up 35 percent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said last Friday that excess iron ore imports had distorted the demand-supply situation and hampered its position at negotiations with global miners on new long-term benchmark prices.     It also said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive selling on the cash market, leading to huge stockpiles and urged to limit import licenses.     However, the iron ore import figures in July reflected orders in May as it takes more than a month to deliver ore from Australia and Brazil, said Zang from Rizhao port.     Chinese steel mills started to reduce orders ever since CISA rejected the 33-percent cut offered by miners in May and held out for more discount, he said.     China News Service reported yesterday that CISA halted talks because iron ore spot prices have been "seriously distorted", citing a statement issued by the association.     However, no such statement could be found on the association's website, and its official surnamed Wang said the report was not true and talks were ongoing.

WUHAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines, the debt-laden private airline based in central China's Wuhan City, officially went bankrupt after its restructuring application was rejected Thursday.     The Intermediate People's Court in Wuhan City said the plan submitted by the East Star Group and ChinaEquity was unfeasible and failed to meet the conditions for a legal restructuring.     ChinaEquity, an investment company founded in 1999 in Beijing, had promised to invest 200 million to 300 million yuan (29 million to 44 million U.S. dollars) for the restructuring plan.     However, it did not specify the source of the funding and failed to provide certificates and documents, and lacked measures to protect creditors, the court said.     The court said East Star Airlines had no operating income in 2008, while ChinaEquity recorded 470,000 yuan in main business income and a 187,477-yuan deficit last year. When asked if China's investigation was a retaliatory move because of the dispute over tire tariffs imposed earlier by the United States, Yao said at a press conference the investigation was in accordance with the country's anti-dumping and anti-subsidy regulations, and based on facts.     China Sunday launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into chicken products and an anti-subsidy investigation into automobiles produced in the United States.     Yao said the probe followed Chinese manufacturers' and industrial associations' demands for an investigation into U.S. companies' dumping activities and government subsidies.     The ministry has received the requests and started evaluations, Yao said.     Ma Chuang, vice secretary general of China Animal Agriculture Association, said 17 member companies, along with other domestic companies, handed over the requests to the ministry.     The United States is the largest chicken products exporter to China. China imported 407,000 tonnes of chicken from overseas markets in the first half of 2009, with 359,000 tonnes, or about 90 percent from the United States.     The U.S. government last Friday imposed special tariffs on tire imports from China. In the next three years, car and light truck tires imported from China will suffer decreasingly punitive tariffs of 35 percent, 30 percent and 25 percent.     On Monday, China asked for talks with the U.S. on the tire tariff issue in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement process.     Yao said the U.S. decision to impose special tariffs on tire imports from China had brought a negative impact to the two countries' trade relationship.     China wanted to have talks and negotiations with the U.S. side on the friction and to practically promote the development of bilateral and multilateral trade relationships, said Yao.     He reiterated that China firmly opposed trade protectionism and discouraged the use of trade remedies measures.

BEIJING, July 28 -- China expressed its hope that the U.S. government will be able to cut its budget deficit in order to prevent inflation that could jeopardize the value of China's dollar-denominated assets, as the two countries wrapped up the first of two days of high-level talks here.     "We sincerely hope the U.S. fiscal deficit would be reduced, year after year," Zhu Guangyao, assistant minister of finance, told reporters after the conclusion of the first day of talks, which have been dubbed the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue.     "The Chinese government is responsible and first and foremost our responsibility is [for] the Chinese people, so of course we are concerned about the security of the Chinese [dollar] assets," Zhu said.     China holds a total of more than 800 billion U.S. dollars in U.S. treasury debt, making it America's largest foreign creditor.     As a result of recent American efforts to counter the financial crisis and stimulate the economy, U.S. government spending has soared, and is projected to reach 1.84 trillion U.S. dollars this year. That is more than four times the previous high.     Many investors and economists fear this deficit spending will lead to inflation, as the increase in the supply of dollars drives down their value, thereby also reducing the value all dollar-denominated assets, including U.S. Treasury bonds. As a result, some investors have started to buy shorter-term bonds, which they hope will not be impacted by any longer-term inflation driven by increased government spending.     U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner assured the Chinese delegation in his opening remark on Monday that U.S. has taken steps to overhaul its financial system, enhance regulation, and control the deficit.     "We are committed to taking measures to maintain greater savings and to reducing the federal deficit to a sustainable level by 2013," he said. However, Geithner did not reveal how, specifically, the United States planned to achieve its deficit-cutting goals during the dialogue.    Both American and Chinese officials, however, agreed that the economy has begun to slowly stabilize.     "We have agreed that green shoots have emerged in the international economy and financial markets," said Zhu. However, the economic foundation is far from being sound, and the current situation remains severe, Zhu warned.     China's economy has shown solid signs of recovery, with its GDP growth picking up to 7.1 percent in the first half of this year after dipping to as low as 6.1 percent in the first quarter. The country's retail sales growth was 15 percent in the first half of this year, the highest since 1985, according to Ministry of Finance figures.     The two-day talks, which are co-chaired on the Chinese side by Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo, and the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner on the U.S. side, covered a wide array of issues, including the global economy, climate change and clean energy as well as regional security issues.     At the opening ceremony on Monday, U.S. President Barack Obama emphasized his hope for closer cooperation between the two countries.     "I believe that we are poised to make steady progress on some of the most important issues of our times," he said. "The relationship between the United States and China will shape the 21st century."

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC)Central Committee Saturday congratulated the Kuomintang (KMT) plenary congress, expecting deepening trust, more exchanges and common understanding across the Taiwan Strait.     The KMT held its 18th plenary congress Saturday morning, at which Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou officially assumed the position of KMT chairman.     In a statement to the KMT Central Committee and Ma Ying-jeou, the CPC Central Committee expected the two parties to stick to the"common wish for peaceful cross-Strait development".     With the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence" as the political foundation, the two parties should deepen mutual trust, increase exchanges and expand common understanding, the statement said.     In response to the CPC statement, the KMT Central Committee said in a reply that the two parties have reached a common understanding to promote cross-Strait peaceful development.     The KMT expected to work with the CPC for improving trust and mutual benefits, in a bid to improve the welfare of people on both sides, the statement said.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated Lien Chan for maintaining the position of KMT honorary chairman and Wu Poh-hsiung for taking the position of KMT honorary chairman respectively.     The "common wish for peaceful cross-Strait development," reached by the two parties during Lien's 2005 visit to the mainland, has set a clear direction and laid the foundation for cross-Strait relations, Hu said in a statement to Lien.     "We sincerely expect Mr. Lien to continue working for the peaceful development across the Strait," he said.     In response to Hu's congratulation, Lien said in a statement that since the two sides resumed systematic talks based on the 1992 Consensus, the peace and stability across the Strait has been greatly enhanced and people's welfare improved.     "We should work even harder to strengthen the five-point common wishes," Lien said.     As the KMT chairman in the past two years, Wu had made great contribution to improving cross-Strait relations, Hu said in a statement to Wu.     Last year and this May, Wu visited the mainland twice for the KMT-CPC talks, which laid solid foundations for favorable exchanges between the two sides, he said.
