HONG KONG, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at a welcoming banquet hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government here Monday evening, elaborating his understanding of and expectations to the HKSAR.     Xi started his toast at the dinner by extending warm greetings and best wishes to Hong Kong people on behalf of the central government and President Hu Jintao. BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities tumbled on Friday following a heavy slump overnight on Wall Street as concerns about the U.S. economic slump worsened.     The Shanghai Composite Index sank 3.29 percent, or 74.97 points, to 2,202.45. The key index has declined more than 58 percent this year and more than 63 percent from its peak in October.     In Shenzhen, the market fell 2.8 percent, or 209.4 points, to 7,264.2. Aggregate turnover expanded to 42.55 billion yuan (6.22 billion U.S. dollars) from 38.99 billion yuan on the previous trading day.     Losses outnumbered gains by 827-47 in Shanghai and 702-32 in Shenzhen.     Wall Street fell on Thursday with the Dow Jones down more than 340 points as disappointing jobless and retail data left investors doubtful of a U.S. economy recovery. The downturn partly contributed to a fall in China equities, analysts said.     Tracking the Wall Street loss, both the Hong Kong and Tokyo exchanges plunged more than 2 percent on Friday. CITIC Securities sank 3.18 percent to 18.56 yuan, Guojin Securities slumped 7.3 percent to 27.94 yuan, while Hongyuan Securities lost 4.79 percent to 13.92 yuan.     China Merchants Securities Co. Ltd. said in a prospectus released late on Thursday that it planned to issue 358.55 million A-shares on the Shanghai bourse. The application would be decided by market regulators on Monday.     If approved, it would become the second domestic brokerage IPO following Everbright Securities after a five-year suspension.

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.

TAIYUAN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers on Thursday had finished searching more than half the mud-covered areas in north China after a mud-rock slide left 128 people dead.     Shanxi Provincial Government Secretary-General Wang Qingxian said about 60 percent of the area had been combed. Altogether 2,000-plus rescuers, with the aid of more than 110 excavators, were searching for survivors.     He said Internet claims that hundreds of people were missing was mere speculation.     "The specific figure of the people missing in the disaster has not been established yet," said Wang at a news conference. "We are still evaluating the situation."     He promised timely and transparent updated casualty numbers, adding 36 people had suffered injuries.     If the weather conditions allowed, searchers would finish looking for survivors in three to five days, he said.     Relatives of the dead will get 200,000 yuan (29,215 U.S. dollars) each as compensation, according to the provincial government.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, has set up an accident investigation team, including officials from the State Administration of Work Safety, Shanxi provincial government, Supervision Ministry, Land and Resources Ministry and All China Federation of Trade Unions. Wang Jun, the State Administration of Work Safety director, was heading the team.     The government has begun examinations to more than 700 tailing ponds in the province to avoid similar accidents from happening again.     There was no epidemic at the area and the injured were receiving treatment, said Gao Guoshun, the provincial health department head, at the news conference.     The water there was not polluted after examination, Gao added.     The disaster happened when the bank of a pond holding waste oredregs of an unlicensed mine burst.     Some reports said hundreds were feared to have been buried underneath the mud, but the local government had released no figures concerning the number of missing.     Wang Qingxian said the mine was purchased and transferred to a man named Zhang Peiliang when the local government auctioned it off in 2005.     But Zhang did not apply for new licenses after its safety production license was suspended in 2006 and the mining license expired in 2007.     "It was an accident of grave responsibility after initial analysis," said Wang Dianxue, the State Administration of Work Safety deputy head and also the investigation team deputy head.     The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Monday in a pond holding waste ore dregs of the Tashan Mine in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, which was soaked by torrential rain.     In total, an area of 30.2 hectares was covered by the mud. The mud-rock flow damaged buildings, trade markets and some residences lying downstream.

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The 6.1-magnitude quake that jolted southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on Saturday has killed 32 people, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     Sichuan reported 27 deaths and the other five were in Yunnan, the ministry said Sunday night.     The quake that occurred at 4:30 p.m Saturday also injured more than 400 people.     The epicenter was at the juncture of Renhe District in Panzhihua and Huili County in Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, Sichuan. It was at a depth of 10 km, the China Earthquake Administration said.     QUAKE IMPACT AND DAMAGE     Areas affected by the quake were Panzhihua and Huili, both in Sichuan, and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali, Lijiang and Zhaotong cities, all in Yunnan Province. Kunming, the Yunnan capital, was also hit.     Most of the fatalities, however, were in Huili, Chuxiong and Panzhihua. All the three areas are on the southern end of the fault line of the May 12 quake that left more than 69,000 people dead and nearly 18,000 missing.     Another 6.0-plus magnitude quake, however, was not expected in the area in the next two weeks, said Liu Jie, chief forecaster of the Beijing-based Chinese Seismographic Information Center, on Saturday.     More than 300 aftershocks were also monitored in the quake zone as of 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to the national earthquake networks.     The networks monitored an aftershock of 5.6 magnitude in the same area of Saturday's quake at 4:31 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, more than 32,000 people were displaced.     In total, 38,425 residences suffered damage in the quake, of which 363 homes were toppled. Seven reservoirs, 22 highways and three bridges were also damaged.     The Panzhihua education authority said cracks were found on the buildings of more than 100 schools, of which 66 were in Renhe, a hard-hit district in the city.     "I am afraid these schools will not open for the new semester starting on Monday," said Shen Zhiqiang, an official with the Panzhihua City bureau of education.     "The figure (of schools affected by the quake) might go up, as damages in some primary schools based in remote mountainous villages were not reported yet due to inconvenient transport conditions," Shen said.     Further south, 600,000 people in five regions of Yunnan were affected by the quake. This included five deaths, more than 170 injured people and the destruction of 130,00 residences, said a Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs source.     The worst hit was Chuxiong where the five deaths were recorded. Destroyed were 111,448 homes, 656 school buildings and 213 buildings totaling 65,554 square meters of floor space. The direct economic loss was put at 500 million yuan (about 73 million U.S. dollars), according to the office for the quake control and relief headquarters of Chuxiong.     RELIEF OPERATION     On Saturday, China Earthquake Administration launched a level-three emergency response and dispatched an on-site working team to offer assistance after the quake struck.     In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs began a level-four emergency response mechanism at 5 p.m.. The civil affairs departments in Panzhihua and Yunnan began a class-three emergency response to cope with the aftermath of the quake.     Panzhihua government officials rushed to the quake zone to direct relief efforts. Relief materials, including water, food and300 tents, as well as emergency financial aid of 5 million yuan, were sent to the quake-affected areas.     More than 2,000 people in Huili were mobilized to join the relief operation that was hampered by heavy rain late on Saturday and early Sunday.     In total, 1,200 tents, together with about 10 tons of food and water were sent to quake zones in Huili, according to Huang Ling, the Huili County Government deputy chief.     On Sunday, Sichuan Provincial Weather Observatory issued a forecast saying the weather in the coming week would be overcast with showers or thunder showers, making the relief effort difficult.     The Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs said it had already sent relief materials including 3,200 tents, 1,000 cotton-padded quilts and 25 tons of rice to quake zones in the province. Chuxiong Prefecture had also allocated 350,000 yuan for disaster relief.     The Jet Li One Foundation, initiated by Chinese film star Jet Li, earmarked 2.5 million yuan and donated materials worth 250,000 yuan on Sunday to the affected areas in the two provinces.     RESUMPTION OF DISRUPTED SERVICES     Traffic on the north-south rail line from Chengdu, the Sichuan capital, to Kunming, which runs all the way through the quake zone, was disrupted temporarily on Saturday and resumed on Sunday.     Some stops on the 1,100 km rail line were damaged, which led to the cancellation of three freight trains, a Kunming Railways Administration source said.     "Resumption of this railway service will guarantee the delivery of relief materials to the quake zone centered on Panzhihua," saida Kunming Railways Administration official.

Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda met on Thursday with 10 representatives of Chinese students studying in Japan, delivering friendly messages before the upcoming visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Japan    Enquiring about their campus life from time to time, Fukuda encouraged the Chinese students to work hard and make due contributions to the Japan-China friendly relations.     The Japanese government and universities provide Chinese students with very favorable conditions for their study, said Li Guangzhe, a Chinese student who is also head of the Chinese students' association in Japan.     Li said that the Chinese students are determined to play a positive role in promoting China-Japan friendship while studying in Japan.     Chinese President Hu Jintao is scheduled to pay a state visit to Japan from May 6 to 10.

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for establishing a fair, open, reasonable multilateral trade system of non-discrimination in the world on Tuesday.     "We oppose protectionism in investment and trade," he said during a meeting with visiting British Finance Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, who is attending the first China-UK economic and financial dialogue.     Wen vowed to work with Britain and other countries to push the Doha round toward a comprehensive and balanced result. Alistair Darling is in Beijing to attend the first China-Britain economic and financial dialogue.    He said the international community was facing increasing opportunities and challenges as economic globalization developed.     Both China and Britain were influential countries and should strengthen their dialogue based on mutual respect, equality, and reciprocity so as to expand common ground and overcome disputes, he added.     Wen hoped China and Britain would take the economic and financial dialogue as a platform to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.     Darling, visiting China as British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's special representative, said Britain viewed relations with China from a long-term perspective.     He said Britain would like to promote dialogue with China on handling issues like economy, finance, and the environment.     He said protectionism on trade was wrong, adding that Britain supported recognizing China's complete market economy status and opposed measures boycotting Chinese commodities.     Darling arrived in Beijing on Monday afternoon. He met with Vice-Premier Wang Qishan early Tuesday.
