HONG KONG, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the sole Renminbi (RMB) clearing bank in Hong Kong, announced here Saturday that it will launch RMB clearing services for trade settlement starting from Monday.     BOCHK said it had singed a clearing agreement with the People's Bank of China in relation to RMB business, and will invite banks and other financial institutions participating in trade settlement to sign a new clearing and settlement agreement.     On Wednesday, the People's Bank of China and other departments on the mainland jointly announced the "Administrative Rules on Pilot Program of Renminbi Settlement of Cross-Border Trade Transactions", allowing RMB settlement of cross-border trade transactions for the first time.     "The initiation of the Pilot Program is of particular significance. It will increase the source channels and the usage of RMB funds," said He Guangbei, vice chairman and chief executive of BOCHK.     Under the Pilot Program, enterprises will also have greater flexibility in selecting the settlement currency of cross-border trade transactions as well as increasing their capability to hedge exchange risk, minimize costs, and boost the efficiency and profitability of cross-border trade transactions, he said.     BOCHK, as a participating bank of RMB business, will take the lead in launching a wide spectrum of RMB trade settlement and finance services for its corporate customers to conduct RMB- denominated trade transactions such as remittances, collections and L/C services between Hong Kong and Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai, said the vice chairman.

SHANGHAI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Sunday mourned the death of Dong Yinchu, honorary chairman of the China Zhi Gong Party central committee, who died of illness on Tuesday at the age of 95.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended Dong's funeral in Shanghai with Yu Zhengsheng, Communist Party chief of the city, and expressed condolences to Dong's family. BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said.     Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.

GUANGZHOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province reported one suspected A/H1N1 flu case late Saturday.     The case involved a 23-year-old Chinese Venezuelan. The female college student left Venezuela Tuesday and flied to Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, Wednesday via Paris, and her relative drove her home in Foshan City, the provincial health department said.     She took a rest at home after showing flu symptoms Thursday and was sent to Foshan No.1 People's Hospital Friday.     Early Saturday, the woman was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu by the Foshan Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The Provincial Center of Disease Control and Prevention reexamined Saturday noon and the result was also positive. The case needs further testing.     China Saturday reported three new influenza A/H1N1 cases, bringing to 24 the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland.     The one in the southeastern province of Fujian involved a local who studied in Canada. The other two in Beijing involved a Chinese American and a Chinese student who studied in the United States.     All the cases but one on the mainland were found shortly after they came from countries hard hit by the A/H1N1 flu epidemic. Seven were in Beijing, four in Shanghai, six in Guangdong, three in Fujian, and one each in Sichuan, Shandong, Zhejiang and Hunan.     Eight cases have been discharged from hospital by Saturday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).     China raised vigilance against influenza A/H1N1 Friday after a patient in southern Guangdong Province was declared the first case of local transmission on the mainland. Medical experts are investigating into and analyzing the local transmission.     The patient, a 24-year-old woman living in Guangdong's capital city of Guangzhou, was believed to be infected by a man from New York on Monday. Guangdong provincial department of health confirmed both as A/H1N1 flu cases Friday noon.     Her flu symptoms have eased, Yin Zhibiao, deputy president of the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital, said Saturday. But as the mainland's first case of local transmission, she would likely stay longer in hospital, Yin added.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Monday called on local governments and government agencies to improve production safety and crack down on illegal practices.     The number of accidents and casualties had fallen this year, Zhang said in a teleconference aimed to improve production safety.     However, some industries still had potential dangers, he said.     Zhang urged authorities to enhance work safety supervision and remove hidden dangers at work places to avoid accidents.     Any illegalities, especially in major industries such as coal mining, construction, and fireworks production, must be eliminated.

BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China released a detailed three-year plan to stimulate its nonferrous metal industry focused on industrial restructuring and technology innovation, the State Council, or the country's Cabinet, said here on Monday.     The nonferrous metal sector should keep a steady operation in 2009, and achieve a sustainable development by 2011, according to the plan.     The country would encourage regrouping among nonferrous metal companies to sharpen the competitive edge of the whole industry, the plan said.     Three-to-five nonferrous metal corporation would be formed out of industrial reconstructing by 2011 with advanced production capacity and technology innovation capability.     Combined copper output of top 10 domestic producers should take up 90 percent of the country's total by 2011, aluminum output 70 percent, lead 60 percent, and zinc 60 percent, according to the State Council.     The government would also encourage the exploitation of nonferrous metals both at home and abroad, supporting companies to invest in mines overseas -- either on their own or with foreign parties.     The country would help with capital injection and foreign reserve application concerning overseas projects.     The export rebate policy would be a "proper" and "flexible" one to encourage nonferrous products with high technology and high added values, according to the plan.     The State Council also laid out guidelines to eliminate obsolete capacity and digest over capacity. No new project to develop electrolytic aluminum will be allowed in the next three years, the plan said.     The country would put strict control on the production of copper, lead, zinc, titanium and magnesium.     At the same time, China aims to save 1.7 million tonnes of coal and 6 billion KWh of electricity per year, as well as reduce sulfur dioxide by 850,000 tonnes annually as part of industrial upgrading for the nonferrous metallurgy sector.     China was the largest producer and consumer of nonferrous metals with total output of ten major nonferrous metals reaching 25.2 million tonnes and total consumption at 25.17 million tonnes in 2008.     The country's nonferrous metal industry received a severe blow from the global economic downturn after keeping high-speed growth for nearly a decade.     Statistics released by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association showed aggregate profit of China's nonferrous metal producers fell 45 percent last year to 80 billion yuan (11.73 billion U.S. dollars).     Along with the support plan for the nonferrous metal sector, the State Council has unveiled stimulus packages for 10 industries since January, such as machinery-manufacturing, electronics and information industries, the light industry and petrochemical sectors.
