URUMQI, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-two women and children in China's far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were rescued on Sunday, one week after they were trapped by avalanches, the region's disaster response authorities said.Bad weather hindered rescue efforts Saturday, but on Sunday two military helicopters managed to take off and reach a coal mining area in Nilka County, Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of Ili, where 135 people were trapped.The helicopters brought the women and children to safe areas, while the rest were left with enough food, vegetables and medicines. They will wait until the road is reopened.Rescuers also airdropped food and medicine for 29 people trapped in an iron mining area in Nilka County.

BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 4.3 percent in January from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Thursday.It quickened from 1.7 percent in December 2009 when the figure ended 12 months of decline.Analysts said the domestic price reform of major resource products and rising international commodity prices accelerated the PPI growth.In breakdown, the price of crude oil surged 70 percent, and that of raw coal was up 5.3 percent.Non-ferrous metal price rose by a quarter.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China denied on Thursday that its economic and trade exchanges with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has violated a United Nations (UN) resolution.At a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang was asked to comment on a report by Yonhap news of the Republic of Korea quoted by China Daily saying Pyongyang announced two islets adjacent to China's northernmost port city Dandong would be developed by Chinese enterprises as a free trade area."This project is purely normal economic and trade contact between the two countries. It does not go against the UN relevant resolution of sanction on the DPRK," he said.The UN Security Council last June adopted a resolution imposing tougher sanctions on the DPRK, including a tighter arms embargo and new financial restrictions, after the DPRK announced a successful nuclear test on May 25, the second since 2006.The resolution also underlined that "measures imposed by this resolution are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the DPRK."

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese central and local governments have poured money into the building of a national cultural information and resources sharing network, deemed as the base for the country's public cultural service system, the Ministry of Culture said Monday.The central government has planned to invest 2.476 billion yuan (362.6 million U.S. dollars) in the project during the country's 11th five-year (2006-2010) plan, among which 2.07 billion yuan (303 million U.S. dollars) has been allocated so far, according to the ministry.The total investment from local governments has reached 2.7 billion yuan (395 million U.S. dollars). One national service center has been established, along with 33 provincial-level centers and nearly 3,000 county-level branch centers, according to the ministry.Initiated in 2002, the project was committed to digitizing domestic cultural resources and sharing them nationwide via Internet, satellite transmission and discs.Vice Minister of Culture Zhou Heping said Monday that the project has made new progress as local governments kept innovating in ways of transmission.The project has extended to a population of 50 million people, according to Zhou.The ministry on Monday also launched a promotion scheme of county-level digital libraries, aiming at transmitting resources from the National Digital Library to nationwide county-level libraries via the cultural information and resources sharing network.The plan would be implemented in 320 counties ahead of the two-week-away Spring Festival, while by the end of this year, a total of 2,940 counties across the country would have libraries with digital library services, the ministry said.

GUIYANG, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a partial collapse of an unfinished building Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province has risen to seven, the rescue headquarters said.A mold supporting structure in the corridor between two halls at the International Conference and Exhibition Center under construction in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou, collapsed at around 11:30 a.m., burying workers working at the area, said a spokesman for the rescue headquarters.Rescuers found 26 workers who were rushed to hospital. Seven of the workers were proclaimed dead shortly upon arrival at hospital, one more seriously injured.Altogether seven remained hospitalized, and another 12 were discharged from hospital after some treatment.The police were investigating the cause of the accident.
