HANOI, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi attended the 9th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Asia-Europe Meeting here on Monday and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.     Yang said with deepening globalization, the destinies of Asia and Europe have been tied together. Countries must intensify cooperation, deepen mutual trust and build a new and closer Asia-Europe partnership.     To build such a partnership, Yang said countries should enhance mutual understanding through dialogue on an equal footing. Countries should promote development through intensified cooperation. Countries should advocate mutual tolerance through expanded exchanges. Countries should strengthen its institution building to ensure the vitality.     Yang made several suggestions to cope with the ongoing financial and economic crisis and other global challenges.     First, Yang said countries should strengthen confidence and strive for economic recovery and growth. CHONGQING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers on Sunday recovered seven bodies from the debris of Friday's landslide site in southwest China, as the search continued to find the 65 people still missing.     The seven bodies, including five men and two women, were yet to be identified, according to the rescue headquarters.     A brief farewell ceremony was held for the deceased.     Rescuers carried out a second explosion at 11 a.m. Sunday to enable the drilling of holes to send food and air to 27 trapped miners who could still be alive after the massive landslide in Chongqing Municipality. The second blasting was carried out at around 1:00 p.m. Sunday to enable the drilling of a hole 40 meters deep to send food and air to 27 trapped miners who could still be alive after Friday's massive landslide.Three drilling machines were working and staff were setting up a fourth, said Ai Yang, spokesman for the Chongqing municipal government.     More than 400 experts, technicians and rescuers had joined the search and rescue operation at the headquarters, said Ai.     Eighty-five people whose homes were threatened by a barrier lake formed by the landslide would be relocated, said Ai. Those in the affected area downstream of the lake had already been evacuated.     The two entrances of the Jiwei Mountain mine were both buried under rocks when the landslide happened at around 3 p.m. Friday. It also buried an iron ore plant and 12 houses in Tiekuang Township, Wulong County, about 170 kilometers southeast of central Chongqing.     Eight people -- three of them seriously injured -- were rescued late Friday. But 21 residents, the 27 trapped miners and 18 miners who worked above ground, two telecommunications company workers and four passers-by, went missing.     With sniffer dogs and life detectors, hundreds of rescuers found no signs of life on the debris on Saturday, said a spokesman with the rescue headquarters.     The 27 miners are about 150 to 200 meters below ground. The air and a small amount of water in the mine could support them for five to seven days. Water is believed to exist in the shafts as Jiwei Mountain mainly comprised limestone, said the spokesman.     Early Sunday, rescuers completed a 28-km road to the site for large machinery such as excavators and bulldozers. Previously, there was only a simple village road.     "We will do our best and use every second to rescue them," said the spokesman, but the mountain was still quite unstable and the rescue operation was dangerous.     On the basis of aerial photos, experts estimated the volume of the landslide debris at about 12 million cubic meters, said Ai Yang.     "Under such circumstances, every step forward in rescue will need unimaginable caution, manpower and material resources," he said.     "The rock debris just covered the entrance, but there are water channels in the shaft. I believe my husband is still alive," said Chen Yuanmei, a woman at the site.     Chen said she was tending her garden in Hongbao Village, when she saw the rocks slide down, throwing up black dust clouds. The dust lingered around 10 minutes and covered her yard, which is 2 km from the mountain.     She felt something bad had happened and immediately called the mine authorities, but failed to reach them.     The Chongqing Land, Resources and Housing Administration has issued an emergency circular urging districts and counties to organize professional teams to launch a thorough inspection of geological disaster-prone areas.     Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang inspected the site early Saturday, asking rescuers to try their best while avoiding secondary disasters. Experts have been asked to investigate the cause of the landslide.     The Ministry of Civil Affairs has earmarked 6 million yuan (870,000 U.S. dollars) to the county for relief work.     The money would be mainly used as benefits for the victims' families and relocation of residents, said Ai.     A large helicopter would also join the rescue work to help carry in equipment and personnel early on Monday, he said. 

DAMASCUS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- During his Middle East tour, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday put out a five-point proposal to push forward the Middle East peace process and common development.     Yang, who has visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that China has been closely following the situation in the Middle East and he has made in-depth exchanges of views with concerned parties on various issues of the region during his Middle East visit. Under such circumstances, Yang put the five-point proposal, which includes:     First, the concerned parties should adhere to the peace talks, and firmly promote the peace process on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the "land for peace" principle, the "Road Map" plan, and the Arab peace initiative, Yang said.     Second, the parties should take positive measures to restore stability and accumulate mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the development of peace process.     Third, China believes the two-state solution should be maintained and calls for an early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the two countries of Palestine and Israeli live in harmony.     "This is the ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue, which can give guarantee to the Middle East peace and security," Yang said.     Fourth, the international community should continue to pay due attention to the Middle East issue, and deliver its supports to the peace talks, the inner-Palestinian unity and economic growth.     Fifth, the peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel, Syria and Israel, Lebanon and Israel should advance in a coordinated way in order to achieve comprehensive peace across the Middle East region, Yang said.     "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with parties concerned to play a constructive role in pushing for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Middle East issue," Yang added.     He said he has enunciated China's position on current Middle East issues during the trip. BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- For the first time in more than one year, China reduced its holding of U.S. Treasury bonds, and experts told Xinhua Tuesday that move reflected concern over the safety of U.S.-dollar-linked assets.     Data from the U.S. Treasury showed China pared its stake in Treasury bonds by 4.4 billion U.S. dollars, to 763.5 billion U.S. dollars, as of the end of April compared with March.     Tan Yaling, an expert at the China Institute for Financial Derivatives at Peking University, told Xinhua that the move might reflect activity by China's institutional investors. "It was a rather small amount compared with the holdings of more than 700 billion U.S. dollars."     "It is unclear whether the reduction will continue because the amount is so small. But the cut signals caution of governments or institutions toward U.S. Treasury bonds," Zhang Bin, researcher with the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government think tank, told Xinhua.     He added that the weakening U.S. dollar posed a threat to the holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds.     The U.S. government began to increase currency supply through purchases of Treasury bonds and other bonds in March, which raised concern among investors about the creditworthiness of U.S. Treasury bonds. The move also dented investor confidence in the U.S. dollar and dollar-linked assets.     China, the biggest holder of U.S. Treasury bonds, is highly exposed. In March, Premier Wen Jiabao called on the United States "to guarantee the safety of China's assets."     China is not the only nation that trimmed holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds in April: Japan, Russian and Brazil did likewise, to reduce their reliance on the U.S. dollar.     However, Tan said that U.S. Treasury bonds were still a good investment choice.     Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, said in March that U.S. Treasury bonds played a very important role in China's investment of its foreign exchange reserves. China would continue to buy the bonds while keeping an eye on fluctuations.     Zhang said it would take months to see if China would lower its stake. Even so, any reduction would not be large, or international financial markets would be shaken, he said.     Wang Yuanlong, researcher with the Bank of China, said the root of the problem was the years of trade surpluses, which created the huge amount of foreign exchange reserves in China. It left China's assets tethered to the U.S. dollar, he said.     He said making the Renminbi a global currency would cut China's demand for the U.S. dollar and reduce its proportion in the trade surplus.

Later, he became a member of the CPC-led Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and played an important role in strategic battles and maneuvers of the Red Army.     During the Long March, Li supported Zhu De and other senior leaders in resolute struggle against the splittist activities of Zhang Guotao.     In China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and the Liberation War (1946-49) against the Kuomintang Regime, Li became a ranking officer in the CPC-led armed forces and fought a large number of major battles and established several revolutionary bases.     After 1949, the year the People's Republic of China was founded, Li served as vice premier for 26 years and played a big role in managing the economy. He was wrongly criticized and persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).     Starting in the late 1970s, as a core member of the second-generation of CPC leadership headed by Deng Xiaoping, Li assisted Deng in ushering in and carrying on the reform and opening-up drive.     In his final years in service, Li held top-level Party and state roles, including vice chairman of the CPC Central Committee, a Standing Committee member of the Political bureau of the CPC Central Committee, state president, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

ROME, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's forthcoming visit to Italy ahead of the G8 summit paves the way for stronger bilateral ties, an Italian expert told Xinhua in an interview.     Luca La Bella, a China analyst with Rome's International Studies Center, said that in the past decades, political, economic and cultural relations between Italy and China have improved. "Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Italy will reinforce this strategic collaboration," he said.     Hu will attend a meeting between the leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) and emerging economies from July 8 to 10 in L'Aquila.     Before the G8 summit, he will pay a state visit to Italy from July 5 to 8 at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. After the G8 meeting, the Chinese leader will visit Portugal from July 10 to 11.     China-Italy ties have maintained a sound momentum of rapid development, especially since 2004, when the two countries forged the first all-round strategic partnership to boost political and economic cooperation, La Bella said.     "The Italian Culture Year in China of 2006 was very successful," La Bella said. BRUSSELS, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China should work together to ward off potential surge of protectionism amid the global economic slump, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Thursday.     "China and the EU should stand firm against any form of protectionism for the sake of a global economic recovery," Wang said in an opening remark at a high-level economic and trade dialogue between the EU and China, two major trading powers in the world.     The EU is now China's largest trading partner, while China is the second largest of the EU. Trade volume between them grew to 425.58 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, an increase of 19.5 percent over the previous year despite the impact of the financial crisis, according to figures from China's customs authorities.     Wang said the two sides have every reason to avoid protectionism, either for the urgent need to work out of the current crisis or due to the irreversible trend of globalization. We have common interest to maintain openness, especially moving forward the Doha Round of world trade talks," she said.     Her view was echoed by Wang, who called for joint efforts with the EU to help the world economy recover.     "The urgent task now is to take decisive measures to kick-start the world economy," Wang said. "The EU is the world's largest economy, while China is the largest developing country. The economic and financial situation in the EU and China has a direct impact on the world economic recovery and financial stability."     The high-level economic and trade dialogue, which is held annually between the EU and China, kicked off in Brussels on Thursday. The two-dialogue brought together key policy makers from both sides, including Wang and EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton.     A further eight EU Commissioners and a total of 12 Chinese ministers or vice-ministers are participating in the far-reaching talks, which cover a series of topics, such as trade, investment, small and medium-sized companies, customs cooperation, sustainable development, product safety and intellectual property rights.     It is the second time that the EU and China hold the high-level economic and trade dialogue, which was agreed at a Sino-EU summit in November 2007. The first meeting was held in Beijing in April 2008.
