BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday pledged to increase cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).     Wen told visiting UNDP Administrator Helen Clark that the Chinese government applauded the UNDP's assistance and support.     Hailing the UNDP's efforts in global development and poverty reduction, Wen spoke highly of the UNDP's positive role in the progress toward achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     Clark expressed her appreciation for China's achievements in its social and economic development, hoping to work with the country to expand cooperation to jointly cope with challenges.     Clark was here on a visit at the invitation of the Ministry of Commerce of China.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The annual per capita GDP in Beijing was expected to top 10,000 U.S. dollars in 2009 as the national capital expected an over 9.5 percent economic growth for the same year, said an official with the municipal economic planning agency Thursday.     Beijing expected to rake in financial revenue totaling 202.7 billion yuan (about 29.8 billion U.S. dollars), up 10.3 percent year on year, said Zhang Gong, head of the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Committee.     The income of urban and rural residents were estimated to rise by 9 percent and 12 percent respectively in 2009 compared to 2008 figures, said Zhang.     Government policies and investment had helped boost local industries amid the global downturn, Zhang said. The city's industrial added value was expected to grow by about 8 percent and the service sector by more than 10.5 percent in 2009, accounting for 73.5 percent of Beijing overall economic strength.     Beijing also strengthened infrastructure construction in 2009 to raise its capability for sustained development, Zhang said. The length of highways and track traffic lines in operation reached 884 kilometers and 228 kilometers respectively currently. The city still has 276.7 kilometers of track traffic line under construction, he said.     The annual per capita GDP in Beijing was more than 9,075 U.S. dollars in 2008 and the figure was 7,370 U.S. dollars in 2007.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Monday asked auditors to keep a close eye on public investment projects to help avoid embezzlement and waste of public funds.     Jerry-built projects and vanity projects should be strictly forbidden with the help of closer follow-up scrutiny of public funds, said the premier in a meeting with participants at a national auditing conference.     The National Audit Office (NAO) statistics showed that altogether 234.7 billion yuan (34.51 billion U.S. dollars) of public funds have been misappropriated and 16.3 billion yuan wasted during the first 11 months this year. PARIS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The preparation for the 2010 Shanghai Expo has proceeded into exhibits arrangements and service operation as site constructions are mostly completed, China's representatives of Executive Committee of the Shanghai Expo announced here Tuesday in its last report of progress in the 146thGeneral Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibition (BIE).     With less than six months ahead of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, all preparation on construction and operation are underway smoothly as scheduled, said Yang Xiong, the deputy director of the executive committee for Shanghai Expo and vice mayor of Shanghai.     Transportation infrastructures inside and outside the Expo site will basically finished by the year end and put into use by the end of next March. Supporting public utilities such as medical treatment, drinking water and communication are also steadily in progress, the report said.     Five permanent structures, namely China Pavilion, Performance Center, Expo Center Theme Pavilion and Expo Boulevard will be completed by the year ends. Twenty-six out of the 42 self-built pavilions of foreign participants have completed their structure and 37 out of 42 rented pavilions were accomplished. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The United States and China, the world's first and third largest economies, have pledged to rebalance each other's economy and move in tandem on forward-looking monetary polices for a strong and durable global economic recovery, according to a China-U.S. joint statement released here on Tuesday.     The statement, issued after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, has climaxed the latter's first China trip since he took office in January.     "China will continue to implement the policies to adjust economic structure, raise household incomes, expand domestic demand to increase contribution of consumption to GDP growth and reform its social security system," said the statement.     The United States, in return, will take measures to increase national saving as a share of GDP and promote sustainable non-inflationary growth.     "To achieve this, the United States is committed to returning the federal budget deficit to a sustainable path and pursuing measures to encourage private saving," it said.     President Obama made it clear at an earlier press conference Tuesday afternoon that the rebalancing strategy would require America to save more, reduce consumption and reduce long-term debts.     The statement also said that both sides will pursue forward-looking monetary policies and have "due" regard for the ramifications of those policies for the international economy.     The two also agreed to expedite negotiation on a bilateral investment treaty, and work proactively to resolve bilateral trade and investment disputes in a constructive, cooperative and mutually beneficial manner.     Recognizing the importance of open trade and investment to their domestic and the global economies, the two are committed to jointly fight protectionism in all its manifestations.     "We both agreed to properly handle trade frictions between the two countries through negotiations on an equal basis, and to make concerted efforts to boost bilateral trade and economic ties in a healthy and steady way," said President Hu.     "I stressed to President Obama that under the current situation, both China and the United States should oppose and reject protectionism in all forms in an even stronger stand," he said.     The two sides also reiterated that they would continue to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on macro-economic policies and pledged to honor all commitments made at the first round of the Sino-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue last July, the Group of 20 summits, and the recently concluded APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Singapore.     The statement said that both sides commended the important role of the three G20 summits in tackling the global financial crisis, and were committed to work with other members of the G20 to enhance the G20's effectiveness as the premier forum for international economic cooperation.     China and the United States also agreed to work through a cooperative process on mutual assessment to make the G20 Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth a success.     The statement said that both sides welcomed recent agreements by the G20 to ensure that the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) have sufficient resources and to reform their governance structures.     "The two sides stressed the need to follow through on the quantified targets for the reform of quota and voting shares of IFIs as soon as possible, increasing the voice and representation of emerging markets and developing countries in these institutions consistent with the Pittsburgh Summit Leaders Statement," it said.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's National Audit Office (NAO)announced on Saturday that, in 2009, no serious violations were found in the management of reconstruction funds for regions hit by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.     Auditors, however, did find some problems in the implementation of post-quake rebuilding plans, distribution of relief funds and management of reconstruction projects, said the NAO.     The NAO has transfered one violation case to the procuratorial organ in 2009. Two people responsible for the violation were arrested and another 11 people were in custody.     The NAO said it and its local offices have already released the auditing results to the public.     Liu Jiayi, chief auditor of the NAO said earlier that they would, in 2010, continue to keep a close eye on the whole process of post-quake rebuilding.
