UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, met with Susan Rice, the new U.S. ambassador to the world body, here on Monday afternoon, and they exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations and other world and regional issues of common concern, diplomatic sources said here Tuesday.     During the meeting, Rice briefed Zhang on the key points of the foreign policy of the Barack Obama administration, the sources said.     The two sides also exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations, and other international and regional issues of common concern. They agreed to strengthen their consultation on and cooperation in the affairs of the United Nations, the sources said.     The new U.S. ambassador made her UN debut on Monday by presenting her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council unveiled a long-awaited support package for the auto and steel sectors Wednesday to boost the two "pillar industries".     Under the plan, the government will lower the purchase tax on cars under 1.6 liters from 10 percent to 5 percent from Jan. 20 to Dec. 31 in a bid to stimulate sales.     It will also allocate 5 billion yuan (730 million U.S. dollars) to provide one-off allowances to farmers to upgrade their three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks to mini-trucks or purchase new mini-vans under 1.3 liters from March 1 to Dec. 31. It will also increase subsidies for people to scrap their old cars and will straighten out and cancel regulations that restrict car purchase.     The plan encourages large auto companies, as well as major auto-part makers to expand through mergers and acquisitions so as to optimize resources and improve their competitiveness on the international market.     In the next three years, the central government will earmark 10 billion yuan as a special fund to support auto companies to upgrade technologies, and develop new engines that use alternative energies. The government will offer financial support to promoting the use of energy-saving autos and those fueled by new energies, and support automakers to develop independent brands and build auto and parts export bases.     The plan also urges improvements in the credit system for car purchase loans. More than 93 percent of Chinese vehicles are sold in the domestic market, but less than 10 percent are purchased on credit.     It also requires accelerated upgrading of the steel sector, transforming "big" industry competitors into "strong" international players.     It said the industry needed to eliminate outdated technology, and must not establish new projects that merely add to steel output.     China also needed to increase domestic demand for steel and adopt a more flexible tax rebate policy to keep international markets.     Special funds will be allocated from the central budget to promote technological advancement of the sector, readjustment of products mix and improvements of product quality, according to the plan.

LIMA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Sunday that China and Russia should strengthen strategic coordination at a time when the global political and economic structures are undergoing the most profound changes since the end of the Cold War.     Hu made the remarks at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on the sidelines of the 16th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, Peru.     China and Russia should make concerted efforts to overcome the impact of the ongoing global financial crisis, maintain the sound momentum of their economic growth, and push ahead with reforms of the international financial system, the Chinese president said. BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese industry faced a grim situation, as the global financial crisis would have a deep impact on the industrial and information technology sectors, a senior official warned on Wednesday.     Zhu Hongren, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the country needed to increase investment in key areas and weak points of the industrial economy. The government should maintain a reasonable investment scale and step up technical innovation.     He said the imbalance between weakening demand and expanding capacity would become more problematic as the crisis spread. Labor-intensive and export-oriented businesses would be hurt as prices of energy and raw materials would continue fluctuating.     Among others, the electricity, textile and non-ferrous metal industries had already sustained heavy losses, with 18.3 percent of large industrial companies losing money during the first eight months of the year.     Industrial output growth fell to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest since April 2002. Power generation and oil production grew a mere 3.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, while steel output fell 9.1 percent year-on-year.     In the first three quarters, the value of industrial exports rose 15.7 percent, which was 6.1 percentage points less than a year earlier.
