BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.     The oil giant had 1.67 million staff last year, which meant more than 80,000 of them would be laid-off within three years, Beijing News reported.     The move followed CNPC's earlier announcement to cut non-production spending by 10 percent from a year earlier, the paper said. The China National Petroleum Corp. BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on the country's top scientists to make more contributions to the social and economic development with more science and technology achievements. Wen made the remark while attending a meeting Tuesday for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivers a speech at the conference of the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the 9th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in Beijing, capital of China, June 24, 2008.    He highlighted the importance of science and technology for the reconstruction in quake-ravaged areas when he reported the latest situation of the relief work to the attending scientists.     Scientists and experts specializing in various of disciplines and fields of research should work closely and provide more scientific evidence and consultations to decision-making, Wen said.     He said after China experienced major disasters and incidents this year the social and economic development had been better than predicted due to Party and government endeavors. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) poses for a photo with his teacher Yang Zunyi, academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, after the conference of the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the 9th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in Beijing, capital of China, June 24, 2008.  However, he admitted there were still problems in the current economic situation that would challenge the economy's long-term, steady growth, adding the general level of the country's science and technology had not met the needs of the social and economic development.     Wen outlined science and technology research should make more achievements to reduce more energy consumption, safeguard agricultural production, prevent serious diseases and deal with climate change and disasters.     He hoped senior scientists and experts could cultivate and guide more young talents and provide more advice to the government's work.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- A high-profile meeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC) ended on Sunday by concluding that the overall situation of the country's economy was good and the dynamic of economic growth remained unchanged.     "The country's overall economic situation is good. The economy is growing quickly and the financial sector is operating steadily. The basic momentum of the country's economy remains unchanged," said a communique released at the close of the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee. Photo taken on Oct. 12, 2008, shows participants listening during the third Plenary Session of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, which was held from Oct. 9 to 12 in BeijingThe four-day meeting focused on issues concerning rural reform and development.     The communique said all Party members should strengthen awareness of crises and face up to challenges as more uncertain and unstable factors emerged in the international economic climate amid deepening financial market turmoil and the slowdown of the world economy.     In the meantime, China's domestic economy featured some notable contradictions and problems, it said. "The most important thing is to do well in the country's own business.     "We should make flexible and careful macro-economic policies. We should step up efforts to boost domestic demand, particularly domestic consumption and keep the economy, the financial sector and the capital market stable.     "We should continue keeping social stability and pushing the country's economy towards sound and fast development," it said.     The meeting also came at a time when the outlook of the world economy became increasingly grim as a result of a serious global financial crisis.     This meeting was significant because it was the third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee 30 years ago that pushed the country on to the road of its historic reform and opening-up drive.

You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you."     A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter.     She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou.     "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview.     But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital.     Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said.     He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas.     Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.
