Qian was then president of the China Association for Science and Technology.     Being a geological expert himself, Wen had supported Qian for his strategic proposals on the development of sand industry, mathematics, and chemical industry. Wen even organized some experts to assist Qian in research projects.     In their meeting, the premier informed the scientist of the country's progress in space industry, such as the forthcoming launch of the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft, the Second Phase of the Moon-orbiting Program, and the country's ambitious plan to build large passenger aircraft.     Wen attributed China's achievements in science and technology to the decades-long efforts made by the elder generation Chinese scientists.     The premier echoed Qian that China still lags behind in many key sectors. "We have to be diligent," Wen said. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) shakes hands with He Zehui, a renowned Chinese physicist during his visit to He's home in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 2, 2008. Madame He, now 94, received Wen at her simple home in Beijing's Zhongguancun -- "China's Silicon Valley".     He, one of the oldest woman nuclear physicists in China, had collaborated with her husband to discover ternary fission and quarternary fission in the uranous nucleus.     Wen has been an old friend of the couple. When the husband was alive, Wen often visited their home. Once, Qian was invited to Zhongnanhai, the office compound of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, in central Beijing, to acknowledge Wen of the latest development of the country's nuclear industry.     Wen talked with He about her daily life and health. BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said here on Sunday that the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no traces of melamine.     It was the fourth round of tests for the industrial chemical since the breaking of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 39 batches of baby formula from 10 brands in six provinces and 133 batches of other milk powder from 45 brands in 18 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 499 batches of baby formula from 53 brands and 709 batches of other milk powder from 142 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.

BEIJING, May 28 -- China's economy can maintain a steady growth above 8 percent for a relatively long period because of a stable society, a vast market and ample capital, said Cheng Siwei, an economist and former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.    "China's economy can stay in the fast developing track if we work hard and pay enough attention to existing problems," Cheng said at a three-day forum with the theme of "Economic globalization and the choice of Asia: transition, growth and welfare" Wednesday in Shanghai.     "Social stability is crucial to economic development while China has a market of 1.3 billion people, which creates a huge consumption power," said Cheng. "Meanwhile, China's foreign reserves have reached US.68 trillion, and it has built up an ample capital pool."     China also beefed up its efforts to improve education and expand its coverage, which paved the way for sustainable economic development, he said, but added that there were problems China could not afford to ignore. File photo of Cheng Siwei    One of them was the yawning gap between the rich and the poor. The income of urban residents has tripled that of rural households while the purchasing power in cities was four times larger than that in rural areas.     China faced increasing pressure to protect the environment and in securing raw materials and resources for its economy. It also lacks a large pool of senior professionals in finance and management.     "For example, we buy a lot of the United States treasury bonds. It means appointing them (US bond managers) to manage our assets and we only gained a little bit of interest," said Cheng. "We are trying to work on such problems."     Cheng estimated China's per capita GDP can reach US,000 by 2010, US,000 by 2020 and US,000 by 2049, given its economic expansion and a stronger yuan.
