BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- After successfully carrying out its first escort mission, the Chinese Navy prepares to cover another 11 domestic merchant vessels planning to travel around Somalia this week.     "We will actively provide information and necessary rescue services for those merchant ships passing through the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters," said He Jianzhong, spokesman with Ministry of Transport (MOT). They are still being held by pirates.     The MOT announced Chinese merchant ships may ask for protection by applying to the China Shipowners' Association (CSA) and China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC).     According to the commander of the Chinese Naval expedition, Real-Admiral Du Jingchen, the main task for the warships is to dispel pirates with their presence.     "We have started our escort mission and will conduct careful deployment and close contact with the vessels to secure their safety by strictly abiding by the U.N. resolutions and international laws," said Real-Admiral Du.     The fleet is carrying about 800 crew members including 70 soldiers from the Navy's special forces along with weapons such as missiles, canons and helicopters.     For the first phase of the escort mission, the fleet will patrol the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters for about three months, followed by possible replacement warships as needed.

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Taxi driver Qu waited patiently in the December night chill as a gas station boy changed the price tag, which indicated China's unified fuel price cut effective early Friday morning.     The country slashed the benchmark prices for fuel from 6.37 yuan (0.93 U.S. dollar) per litre to 5.46 yuan starting Friday morning, which was earlier than the long-awaited government scheme on fuel taxation and pricing slated for Jan. 1 next year.     "The price cut of 0.91 yuan per litre means a monthly saving of900 yuan for a taxi driver," said Qu, waiting in Thursday's midnight dark for the clock to turn zero.     The government distributed the news of the price cut via all major media and short messages to cell phone users on Thursday evening.     Nevertheless, there was no queuing-up at the gas station in the early morning hour. BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said on Saturday the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no trace of melamine.     It was the seventh round of tests for the industrial chemical since the report of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 105 batches of baby formula from 20 brands in 10 provinces and 161 batches of other milk powder from 52 brands in 15 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 804 batches of baby formula from 66 brands and 1,126 batches of other milk powder from 161 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine.     Earlier on Friday, the agency said the 12th round of tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine.     So far, the quality watchdog had conducted sample tests on 5,797 batches of liquid dairy products manufactured after Sept. 14from 136 brands and found all safely under the limit.     Last week, the government set temporary melamine content limits in dairy products of a maximum of 1 mg per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products that contained at least 15 percent milk.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.
