BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit concluded its first closed session here Friday evening, with the global financial crisis topping the agenda.     Leaders and representatives of the 45 ASEM members attended the meeting which lasted two hours.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the meeting and made the leading speech.     Wen called on Asian and European nations to make concerted effort in response to the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Wen said the international financial and economic situation is an issue linked up with the direct interests of all ASEM members, and that is why the issue was listed the top subject for discussion.     "Asian and European nations are an important force to safeguard international financial stability and promote world economic growth," Wen said. "We should make concerted effort to show the world our confidence, unity and cooperation," he added.     He said relevant countries and organizations have taken measures in response to the global financial crisis, and China hopes these measures would achieve the desired results soon.     He also called for global action to jointly respond to the crisis.     The leaders present at the meeting had an "enthusiastic and in-depth" discussion on how to tackle the crisis, as well as how to promote Asia-Europe trade and investment, the Foreign Ministry said, giving no further details.     The seventh ASEM summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will all together have four closed sessions.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Friday he hoped the United States and China would deepen mutually beneficial financial interdependence.     Carter said the financial crisis enabled closer ties between the United States and China and he hoped China would continue to buy U.S. government debt.     Carter, in China to attend events to mark the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. diplomatic ties, conveyed President-elect Barack Obama's message of his resolve to maintain sound bilateral relations.     Although China and the U.S. had different cultures, histories and political systems, they had much more in common, said Carter at a symposium marking the anniversary.     The United States attached great importance to U.S.-China relations, especially in coping with the challenge of global climate change and the financial crisis, he said.     He believed bilateral relations would continue to develop and improve in the next 30 years.     In Shanghai, Carter also attended the opening of a photo exhibition which showcased the 30-year course of China-U.S. relations.     The former president also voiced his confidence in the strong U.S. participation in the Shanghai World Expo to be held in 2010.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Thursday started to review a draft law on food safety, which sets stricter food quality standards and demands greater government responsibility.     The draft, which was revised after the recent contaminated dairy products scandal, would ban all chemicals and materials other than authorized additives in food production.     Health authorities are responsible for assessing and approving food additives and setting their usage. "Only those proved to be safe and necessary in food production are allowed to be listed as food additives," the draft says.     Food producers must strictly stick to the food additives and their usage approved by authorities, according to the draft     In the tainted dairy products scandal, melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make protein levels appear higher. At least three infants died and more than 50,000 were sickened after drinking the contaminated milk.     The draft also prohibits food safety supervision authorities from issuing inspection exemptions to food producers.     China began exempting companies producing globally-competitive products from quality inspections in 2000 to help them avoid repeated examinations and reduce their burden.     The practice encountered severe criticism when it was discovered that many of the companies producing and selling melamine-tainted dairy products had national inspection exemption qualifications.     The draft was tabled to lawmakers at a bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).

BEIJING, Jan. 19 -- Air China Ltd, the nation's largest international carrier, expects to report its first annual loss in at least eight years on waning travel demand and wrong-way bets on fuel prices.     The carrier made paper losses of 6.8 billion yuan (994.5 million U.S. dollars) on fuel-hedging in 2008, it said on Friday in a Hong Kong stock exchange statement. The hedging contracts "will have a considerable effect on the financial results for the year."     The airline is also able to hedge a greater proportion of its fuel needs than rivals, as Chinese carriers are barred from hedging purchases of fuels for domestic flights. That has previously enabled Air China to limit the effect of increasing fuel prices.     The airline's passenger numbers fell 1.7 percent in 2008 to 34.2 million, the first decline in five years. BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), announced on Wednesday it would cut benchmark interest rates by 0.27 percent to spur economic growth as of Oct. 30.     The benchmark one-year deposit rate would drop to 3.60 percent from 3.87 percent, while the benchmark one-year lending rate would fall from 6.93 percent to 6.66 percent.     This is the second such move in less than one month, highlighted the government's rising concern over the slowing economy and slumping capital market.     The previous was on Oct. 8, when the PBOC announced to cut deposit and lending rates was lowered by 0.27 percentage points and decided to cut the reserve-requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points from Oct. 15.     "It reflects that the government is worried about a cooling down economy and other domestic problems, amid a deepening U.S.-originated world credit crisis, " said Tang Min, China Development Research Foundation deputy secretary.     China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew to 20.16 trillion yuan (2.96 trillion U.S. dollars) in the first three quarters of this year, up 9.9 percent from the same period of last year.     The growth rate was 2.3 percentage points lower than the same period of last year, and half a percentage point lower than the first half.     "This was also a timely response to the rate cuts by other central banks worldwide and part of a coordinated effort to stem the global financial crisis, " said Tang.     The recent intensification of the financial crisis has augmented the downside risks to growth and thus has diminished further the upside risks to price stability, experts say.     Tang added, the easing in inflation has given room for the authorities to loosen monetary policy. Inflation is no longer a threat with the declining commodities prices.     China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose 4.6 percent in September over the same period last year, off from the 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     "A lower interest rate will help domestic enterprises to cut business costs, and boost economic development. This is in line with the country's expectation," Tang noted.     Zhuang Jian, senior economist with Asia Development Bank echoed with Tang, saying a relaxed credit and financing environment is a key factor to enlarging domestic demand and boost consumption.     "Maintaining a fast and sound economic development is the government's top priority currently," Zhuang added.     However, Zhuang noted, monetary policy alone was not enough to boost domestic economy in the long term. Other fiscal policies were also very important.     Guo Tianyong, director of banking research center with Central University of Finance and Economics said, this move was also contribute to rebuilding people's confidence over the poorly-performing domestic stock market and real estate market.     China's stock market dropped more than 66 percent from its peak last October, while real estate prices continue to fall in recent months.     Last week, China announced an array of policies, including tax exemption and mortgage deposits reduction, to boost the falling real estate sector amid the global economic slowdown.     The interest rates on a mortgage for first time home buyers was cut by 0.27 percentage points as of Oct. 27.
