BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua)-- China has named its first home-made jumbo jet C919, which will take off in around eight years, its chief designer Wu Guanghui said on Friday.     "C represents China as well as COMAC, the abbreviation for Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd," said Wu, who is also the deputy general manager of COMAC, the manufacturer of C919.     "The name also reflects our determination to compete in the international market for jumbo jet. C919 comes after Airbus and Boeing, so you will have ABC in the aviation industry," said Wu, apolitical advisor who is here attending the annual session of 11thNational Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.     The first 9 in the name implies forever in Chinese culture, while 19 means the first jumbo jet produced by China will have 190seats, he said.     Wu said that his company will choose suppliers of engines, airborne equipment, and materials through international bidding, and will encourage foreign suppliers to enter into partnership with Chinese manufacturers.     "We will choose foreign-manufactured products like engines at the beginning phase, but we will also independently do the research and manufacturing work at the same time," noted Wu.     The Shanghai-based COMAC was set up in May, 2008 after approval in early 2007 by the State Council, China's Cabinet. BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China said it would raise benchmark retail prices of gasoline and diesel by 290 yuan (42.46 U.S. dollars) per tonne and 180 yuan per tonne, respectively, as of midnight Tuesday.     It is the second oil price adjustment this year. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner, cut benchmark pump prices of gasoline and diesel by 140 yuan and 160 yuan per tonne, or 2 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, on Jan. 14.     Experts said more frequent price adjustments show China can respond more quickly to international oil price changes after a new pricing mechanism took effect Jan. 1, 2009. LHASA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Five bouquets of lily and chrysanthemum, one for each of the five young women who died in the riots exactly a year ago.     "We are here today, to bring you our best regards," murmured Tang Qingyan, manager of the Yishion casual wear outlet in downtown Lhasa. "May you be happy every day in heaven."     Yishion, one of the 908 shops torched by the rioters on March 14, 2008, lost five employees, including four Han nationals and one Tibetan. The women were aged between 19 and 24.     Exactly a year after the tragedy, Tang brought six employees to mourn the dead Saturday on the exposed riverbed of the Lhasa River, whose water has, in the dry season, given way to a huge expanse of sand and cobblestones.     The place was quietly sandwiched between high mountains and the "Sun Island", Lhasa's new development project with restaurants, apartments and villas. The occasional whining chirps of aquatic birds added to people's woes.     Silently, the group laid offerings on the ground: five candles, piles of "paper money", incense sticks, and two strings of firecrackers.     "Here, we've brought you some money, too, so that you won't be short of cash," said Tang as he led four young women and two men to put the "paper money" in a little flame they lit on the ground.     The Chinese traditionally burn "paper money" for the deceased, hoping they would have enough cash in the afterlife.     "Dear sister, I've got your favorite sweater," Zeng Yaoyao sobbed as she put a white sweater in the flame. "She told me this morning she was going to mourn her friend Zhoi'gar in the Tibetan way, and at monasteries."     Towards the end of the mourning, the flames spread to burn card-boards they had carefully propped up with cobblestones to contain the fire. With all the offerings burnt, the group threw the bouquets into the river. "It's sad indeed. BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Chinese wrote to the Ministry of Education in the past month to offer advice on the education plans for the next decade, according to a ministry official on Friday.     The Ministry of Education received about 1.1 million pieces of proposals in the past month, said Tian Huisheng, said a ministry official in charge of processing the public opinions.     People sent e-mails, letters and left posts on the ministry's Web site since the draft of the long-term plan on education reform and development was announced to solicit public opinions on Jan. 7.     The plan will be the country's first education development plan in the 21st century. It will include major guidelines and policies about education before 2020.     People from various backgrounds wrote to the ministry, including teenage students, retired teachers and pedagogy experts, said Han Jin, director of the education development planning division under the ministry in charge of drafting the plan. "The ministry has never ever received so many proposals."     Han recalled a letter from a 91-year-old retired teacher.
