BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 150 disabled people were honored in Beijing Friday as national models for self-reliance.     They were the fourth batch of such honorees since China began in 1991 to honor disabled citizens for their unyielding spirits in the face of adversity.     "I'm very happy and proud of myself," said 32-year-old Ma Yunli, one of the medal receivers.     A native in Yanan in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the mentally-challenged girl was winner of several medals of Paralympic Games.     "Through years' efforts, I can basically take care of myself and can even do some simple things for my family members," she said.  Chinese President Hu Jintao (R, front) shakes hands with representatives before a national meeting in Beijing, capital of China, July 3, 2009. I also want them to achieve success."     According to the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF), the honored disabled this year aged from 19 to 72. Some of them are workers, farmers, students, and others come from various sectors including education, medical service, law, culture and science.     Among them, 97 suffer from limb disabilities, 32 are sight-disabled, 18 have hearing problems, two are mentally-impaired, one suffers from more than one kind of disability.     Also at Friday's conference, 200 institutions and 150 individuals were honored for the great help they had given to the disabled.     China has more than 83 million people with various kinds of disabilities, accounting for 6.34 percent of the total population.     Chinese leaders including Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang met the delegates of the conference before it started.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said while addressing the meeting that the government should "speed up the establishment of social security and service systems for the disabled to create equal and better environment for them to participate in social affairs and for their all-round development."     Activities to help this group of people should be "more professional" and "standardized," said Hui, also director of the disabled working committee of the State Council, or Cabinet.     The CDPF's Chairwoman Zhang Haidi, a wheelchair-bound writer, presided over the conference.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Kuwait signed five agreements here on Sunday in an effort to further the bilateral relations to a higher level.     The agreements covered fields of energy, finance, telecommunication, transportation and education, according a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- For the first time in more than one year, China reduced its holding of U.S. Treasury bonds, and experts told Xinhua Tuesday that move reflected concern over the safety of U.S.-dollar-linked assets.     Data from the U.S. Treasury showed China pared its stake in Treasury bonds by 4.4 billion U.S. dollars, to 763.5 billion U.S. dollars, as of the end of April compared with March.     Tan Yaling, an expert at the China Institute for Financial Derivatives at Peking University, told Xinhua that the move might reflect activity by China's institutional investors. "It was a rather small amount compared with the holdings of more than 700 billion U.S. dollars."     "It is unclear whether the reduction will continue because the amount is so small. But the cut signals caution of governments or institutions toward U.S. Treasury bonds," Zhang Bin, researcher with the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government think tank, told Xinhua.     He added that the weakening U.S. dollar posed a threat to the holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds.     The U.S. government began to increase currency supply through purchases of Treasury bonds and other bonds in March, which raised concern among investors about the creditworthiness of U.S. Treasury bonds. The move also dented investor confidence in the U.S. dollar and dollar-linked assets.     China, the biggest holder of U.S. Treasury bonds, is highly exposed. In March, Premier Wen Jiabao called on the United States "to guarantee the safety of China's assets."     China is not the only nation that trimmed holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds in April: Japan, Russian and Brazil did likewise, to reduce their reliance on the U.S. dollar.     However, Tan said that U.S. Treasury bonds were still a good investment choice.     Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, said in March that U.S. Treasury bonds played a very important role in China's investment of its foreign exchange reserves. China would continue to buy the bonds while keeping an eye on fluctuations.     Zhang said it would take months to see if China would lower its stake. Even so, any reduction would not be large, or international financial markets would be shaken, he said.     Wang Yuanlong, researcher with the Bank of China, said the root of the problem was the years of trade surpluses, which created the huge amount of foreign exchange reserves in China. It left China's assets tethered to the U.S. dollar, he said.     He said making the Renminbi a global currency would cut China's demand for the U.S. dollar and reduce its proportion in the trade surplus.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China would like to join with Myanmar to promote comprehensive, stable and lasting relations, Vice President Xi Jinping said Tuesday.     During talks with Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Vice-Chairman Maung Aye, Xi said China valued good-neighborly relations with Myanmar.     He said Myanmar was among the first group of countries that forged diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China, and Sino-Myanmar relations had maintained good momentum. BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China did not lose its advantages in foreign trade despite global downturn and could retain foreign trade level above the global average once global economy recovered, a senior Chinese official said Saturday.     Yi Xiaozhun, vice commerce minister, was speaking at the Global Think Tank Summit that ended Saturday in Beijing.     Though China's foreign trade would not rise sharply as it did in the past few years, the country did not lose its foreign trade advantages thanks to policies to stimulate domestic demands, Yi said.     He said China had been diversifying foreign trade and reported increased trade with countries in Africa, Middle East, middle Asia and Latin America.     Yi also called for halt on protectionism, saying that protectionism had been picking up and about 40 percent of anti-dumping cases and 70 percent of anti-subsidy cases targeted China.     He called for pushing forward the Doha round negotiation, which he believed was key in fighting against protectionism.

ANSHAN, Liaoning, June 16 (Xinhua) -- An official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Tuesday that the proposed alliance of Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton had a "strong monopolistic color" and Chinese firms would watch it closely and find ways to cope with it.     Last year, China imported 440 million tonnes of iron ore, half of the world's total, so any slight market changes would affect Chinese steel makers. China's anti-monopoly law should apply in the proposed deal, said Chen Yanhai, head of the raw material department of MIIT at an industry meeting held in the northeastern city of Anshan, Liaoning Province.     If the tie-up proved to be monopolistic, "we have to seek new policies and regulations to allow Chinese companies have a bigger say in iron ore pricing," said Chen without elaborating.     Rio Tinto scrapped a proposed 19.5-billion-U.S.-dollar investment by Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, on June 5, and turned to rival BHP Billiton, which would pay Rio Tinto 5.8 billion U.S. dollars to set up a joint venture to run the iron ore resources of both companies in west Australia.     On Monday, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce Yao Jian said if the revenue of the joint venture reached "a certain amount," China's anti-monopoly law would apply.     That law requires a company to get government approval before consolidation if its global revenue exceeds 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) and its revenue in China exceeds 2 billion yuan.     An anti-monopoly review is also necessary if two or more parties in the company had more than 400 million yuan of revenue in China in the previous fiscal year.     In the year ended 30 June, BHP Billiton's revenue in China was 11.7 billion U.S. dollars, while that for Rio Tinto was 10.8 billion U.S. dollars, according to the companies' websites.     It was unclear what actions China would take if the case was determined to be covered by the Chinese anti-monopoly law.     At the meeting Tuesday, Chen also said domestic steel makers should beef up technology and innovation to cut energy consumption and raise efficiency. Also, he said, China "should increase exploration of domestic mines to reduce reliance on imports."
