MACAO, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The year of 2008 saw China make several great achievements in various fields, which is a testimony to the nation's improving comprehensive national strength, the chief of Macao said at a reception held here on Wednesday to celebrate the 59th anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Attracting worldwide attention, the Chinese mainland successfully held the Beijing Olympics and the Paralympics in the past two months, while taking great steps in its space exploration history by accomplishing the Shenzhou VII mission that saw the first spacewalk by a Chinese astronaut, Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Special Administration Region (SAR), said when addressing over 1,000 officials and luminaries at the cocktail party.     He also pointed out that China showed profound and strong vigorand demonstrated its national spirit, when the whole nation mustered up its concerted effort to brave the challenge of massive snowstorms that swept several provinces and the powerful earthquake occurred in the Sichuan province that led to a large number of deaths.     The party was part of the annual events held on China's National Day every year. The chief executive officiated a flag-raising ceremony at the city's Lotus Flower Square early Wednesday morning, and later met more than 40 young people from the quake-hit Sichuan province, who assisted the rescue of victims in the disaster area.     Since this year will also witness the 30th anniversary of China' s reform and opening-up, Ho noted that after undergoing numerous challenges and overcoming various difficulties in the past three decades, the nation entered a new era of its development. "Being a Chinese, we all take great pride in it," he said     Regarding the nine years after the SAR's establishment, Ho concluded that behind every step of the SAR's development, there was the all-out support from the central government, and the SAR also closely kept pace with the development and construction of the mainland, in a bid to strengthen its ties with the mainland people.     Next year will not only witness the 60th founding anniversary of PRC, but the 10th anniversary of the SAR. Ho said that the SAR government will continue promoting Macao's development and progress, bettering people's lives and sharing the fruits of the development.

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The infant milk powder produced by most companies in China was safe according to the nationwide check results following the Sanlu baby formula scam, the country's State Council departments said on Tuesday.     The State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said it had tested 491 batches of baby milk powder produced by all the 109 companies in the country in a special inspection move. The infant milk powder produced by most companies in China was safe according to the nationwide check results following the Sanlu baby formula scam, the country's State Council departments said on Tuesday. 69 batches from 22 companies nationwide were found containing melamine, a chemical which had tainted Sanlu's baby formula and led to kidney stone illness of more than 1,200 infants across the country.     The number of companies with melamine-tainted milk accounted for 20.18 percent of the total of milk powder companies in China. And the number of tainted batches accounted for 14.05 percent of the total batches tested.     The melamine content in the Sanlu brand reached 2,563 mg per kg, the highest among all the samples. In other samples, the range was from 0.09 mg to 619 mg per kilogram. Every batch of products will be checked.     Sanlu, which is 43 percent owned by New Zealand dairy company Fonterra, has been ordered to halt production. The Hebei provincial government decided on Tuesday to dispatch four working teams to Sanlu Group for a thorough investigation.     So far, four milk dealers have been arrested and 22 others detained for questioning by Hebei police.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Thursday night it had launched a level-three flood control emergency response mechanism to cope with Typhoon Kalmaegi.     Tropical storm Kalmaegi escalated to typhoon level on Thursday and was expected to be reinforced and land the coast areas in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on Friday, according to the headquarters. Heavy storms are likely to hit the coast cities in Zhejiang, the provincial meteorological authority said Thursday.     It is also expected to bring heavy rain to Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in Fujian in the next two days.     The heavy rain would continue in Fujian until this weekend, according to the weather services.     Flood-control, offshore fishery and marine authorities in Fujian, Zhejiang and Shanghai have sent out warnings for early preparations against the storm. BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday pledged its support for United Nations role of safeguarding world peace and coordinating on international issues.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the UN shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will work diligently to maintain an effective and smooth communication channel with citizens who want to submit complaints, a senior Party official said here on Tuesday.     "We should try to adopt every open, convenient and easy method to guarantee the public's right to express their requests to the government," said Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a video tele-conference on government officials receiving citizens and visiting grassroots people.     In the past nine months, asked by the central government, senior officials of the city, county and district governments met with ordinary citizens in person regularly, listening to their requests and complaints and helping solve their problems. They also paid more frequent visits to grassroots people.     "Their work eased serious problems that were closely related to people's interests and threatened social stability," Zhou said. "Their visits at grassroots levels contributed to the implementation and improvement of central government policies."     The country will formulate the measures into a system and continue improving them, he said. Supervision will be tightened upon the implementation of the measures.     "Senior officials of local governments will receive serious penalty according to laws and Party disciplines if problems and conflicts worsen and linger because they ignore people's requests, harm their rights and interests, breach their duty."     Officials were also urged to well inform people about expressing their requests through legal and rational ways.     Governments at all levels should adopt a scientific and democratic way of decision making, pay more attention to public service and try to prevent new problems from emerging, Zhou said.     They should also find out the cause and solution to existing problems, he said. "They should focus on well solving people's legal requests timely."

CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Authorities said the death toll might change every hour, as they heard reports from rescuers who were seizing every minute to pull out bodies from the earthquake rubble.     The earthquake, which centered on the province's Wenchuan County at 2:28 p.m. Monday, has left the province in chaos. More than 3.46 million houses were wracked, Li said.     Li said he was deeply saddened by the super earthquake. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.
