SHANGHAI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Canada would like to further economic ties with China, said visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper here on Friday.     Harper announced the launch of four new trade offices in China by the Canadian government in cooperation with the Canadian Commercial Cooperation at a welcome banquet here Friday night. During this period, Canadian exports to China have grown by more than 3 billion dollars.     The total bilateral trade is now valued at over 53 billion dollars. China is Canada's second largest merchandise trading partner and third largest export market. BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The output value of China's energy saving and environmental protection industry would hit 2.8 trillion yuan (412 billion U.S. dollars) by 2012, said Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission on Sunday.     Those sectors have become a new economic growth point and have bright prospects in China, Xie said at the fourth China-Japan Energy-saving and Environment Protection Forum which began Sunday.     He said the government will beef up investment in the construction of resource recycling projects, which will directly boost the industry development.     He noted the government will further reform the pricing system of the resource products.     Enterprises should also enhance innovation to break technological bottleneck notably in the development of clean coal transfer technology and pollutants treatment facilities.     China has been pushing for a national energy saving campaign to address the worsening conflicts between economic growth and environmental deterioration.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China should take more forward looking and preemptive measures to fight inflation expectations following this year's credit boom and runaway property prices, said a report released by a leading Chinese bank.     Bank loans should be extended at a more reasonable pace with improved structures next year and policy fine-tuning is necessary, the Bank of Communications has said in a report released by its financial research center.     The government should maintain the continuity and stability of its monetary policy and meanwhile be more targeted and flexible, it said.     The report noted an over brisk equity and property market are always prelude of inflation. Money flow should be regulated to prevent asset bubbles.     It also suggested government increase supply of land resources and affordable housing and crack down on land enclosure to curb skyrocketing property prices which gained the most in 14 months in November.     CPI, the main gauge of inflation, jumped 0.6 percent in November from a year ago, the first monthly growth since January, because of lower statistical bases and rising food prices.     The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, declined 2.1 percent in November from a year earlier.     The report expected PPI to end monthly drop in December, and the annual CPI decline to narrow to 0.8 percent.     Hyperinflation is unlikely and CPI is predicted to rise four percent next year, it said.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese mainland official on Wednesday urged media organizations across the Taiwan Strait to cover more stories on cross-Strait relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     Media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement, Jia said.     In light of the bright prospect of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, media exchanges between the two sides are facing unprecedented opportunities, he said.     Jia called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.     He encouraged the staff of the media industry to seek common ground while shelving differences.     On behalf of the SEF and the people in Taiwan, Chiang expressed gratitude for the mainland's donations and assistance after the island was hit by Typhoon Morakot in August.     Mainland's donations, which were transferred to Taiwan mainly through the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will be used for reconstruction in Taiwan, Chiang said.     Chiang also stressed the need for media at both sides to carry out further communication and cooperation.     According to Jia, the ARATS and the SEF had initially agreed to have the fourth round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung in mid or late December.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's leading steelmaker, announced on Monday its acquisition of 15 percent stake in Aquila Resources, an Australian iron ore and coal company.     The 286 million Australian dollar purchase (265 million U.S. dollars) has made Baosteel the second largest shareholder of Aquila, said the Chinese company based in Shanghai.     The transaction is an important strategy for Baosteel's overseas expansion by securing long-term supply of critical raw materials for its steel making business, said the company.     The deal will help the Australian company source low-cost financing from Chinese institutions to support its projects.     Tony Poli, executive chairman of Aquila said on the company website, "The company now looks forward to developing its relations with Baosteel to the mutual benefit of both companies."     The deal was approved on November 13 by China's top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and it was Baosteel's first large strategic investment in a foreign public company.     The two companies signed an agreement on the acquisition in August this year and got nod in October by Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), which limited Baosteel's stake in the Australian company to the utmost 19.9 percent.     Under the terms of the deal, Dai Zhihao, a vice president of Baosteel, will step in as a board member of the Australian coalminer.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China issued a directive Friday that aims to promote renovation of the substandard dwellings in the country's urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines, in a move to improve the livelihood of low-income people.     Renovation of squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories should be completed in the next fives years, according to the directive posted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on its website.     Priority should be given to "the shanty towns covering large areas and with severe safety defects," according to the ministry.     It also urged relevant departments to give full respect to the rights and interests of the people living in substandard dwellings, who are mainly low-income laid-off workers, and to ensure that renovating work be conducted in an open and fair way.     The directive put forward multiple ways to finance the renovation work, including government funds, favorable loans from financial institutions, and tax rebates.     By the end of 2008, China had 11.48 million families living in substandard housing, 7.44 million of which lived in cities, 2.38 million near state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.
