TAIPEI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation signed deals to purchase Taiwan products worth more than 2.2 billion U.S. dollars after a four-day visit to the island, it was announced Thursday.     Orders involving 827 million dollars of products would be filled by July, and products worth of 1.4 billion dollars would be delivered by the end of this year, said Li Shuilin, head of the delegation.     On their shopping list are LCD (liquid crystal display) equipment, spare parts for mobile phones and computers, plastic and chemical products, textiles and handcrafts, he said.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     Their buying spree was seen as a symbolic step to expand trade ties between the mainland and Taiwan and to offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The mainland businesses held talks with more than 300 Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland.     They also discussed how to use their reciprocal advantages to reinforce manufacturing capacities of both the mainland and Taiwan, Li said.     Also on Thursday, telecommunication industries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait agreed to tap mobile telecommunication markets, particularly the mainland's newly-launched 3G (third generation mobile telecommunication) market.     A total of 17 telecommunication service providers and 30 equipment manufacturers of the mainland were invited to attend a forum in Taipei this week.     Datang Telecom, a mainland telecommunication equipment vendor, signed an agreement on cooperation with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). They will discuss the possibility of a pilot network in Taiwan using Datang's TD-SCDMA 3G mobile telecommunications standard.     "We see a lot of opportunities for cooperation as the mainland is fast developing its 3G market," said Liu Liqing, chairman of the China Association of Communications Enterprises.     Johnsee Lee, president of the ITRI, also said the discussions would help local equipment producers better understand the market potential and industrial standards in the mainland.

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China has called for the EU to recognize its market economy status soon, said Yao Jian, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) here Friday.     China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming will attend the 11th China-EU Summit in Prague in the Czech Republic next week, Yao said.     The summit will address China's desire to be recognized as full market economy by the EU soon, the limitation on high-tech exports to China from the EU and bilateral economic cooperation, Yao said.     China need not be recognized by any country in terms of market economy as a concept, but market economy status is a technicality that will help China receive fair treatment in anti-dumping investigations, Yao said.

The two countries will seriously carry out related resolutions of the United Nations (UN) in the hope that implementing them can help maintain peace and stability of the peninsula.     Both sides believed that the six-party talks was the only effective mechanism to resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Only within the framework of the talks, can all parties find solutions to their security concerns, the ministers said.     They said China and Russia were ready to make efforts, along with other parties, to resume the six-party talks.     Wu arrived on Thursday in Moscow to discuss the Korean nuclear crisis. BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- China unveiled Saturday credit rating standards for the sovereignty entity of a central government, the first sovereign credit rating standards in China, aiming broader participation in global credit rating.     The standards were announced by Dagong Global Credit Rating Co., Ltd, one of the first domestic rating agencies in China.     The sovereign credit rating standards would be able to evaluate the willingness and ability of a central government to repay its commercial financial debts as stipulated in contracts, said the company.     The rating results could reflect the relative possibility of a central government to default as a debtor, and the rating is based on the country's overall credit value, according to Dagong.     Elements of credit risks will include the country's political environment, economic power, fiscal status, foreign debt and liquidity, said the company, adding that it judges the credit of a sovereign entity on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of its fiscal strength and foreign reserves.     Compared with other rating agencies, Dagong pays more attention to the different economic stage of each country, and examines the features of its credit risks in a holistic and systematic view, according to Dagong.     Jiang Yong, director of the Center for Economic Security Studies under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said the financial crisis exposed a risk of the international society relying solely on the credit rating institutions of a single country, which is the largest risk of the world economy.     Luo Ping, head of the training center under China Banking Regulatory Commission, said the launch of the sovereign credit rating standards would help improve the transparency of credit rating information, and would strengthen China's position in the international financial arena.

BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended the 11th China-EU summit with European leaders in Prague on Wednesday, focusing on bilateral strategic partnership, the global financial crisis and climate change.     The two sides reached a number of consensus at the summit which will play an active role in promoting a sustainable development of bilateral relations in an in-depth and all-around way.     Premier Wen stayed in Prague for a mere of five hours, but needed a 20-hour flight to go forth and back, indicating his sincerity, responsibility and confidence in meeting with the EU leaders.     Sincerity, responsibility and confidence are crucial in pushing forward the comprehensive China-EU strategic partnership, which is the experience drawn from the past and the need of reality.     Under the complex international political and economic situation, the China-EU relations have gone beyond the bilateral scope and bears more international significance.     China and the EU enjoy a solid basis in continuing cooperation and meeting challenges jointly.     Up to now, the two sides have set up more than 50 consultation and dialogue mechanisms covering political, trade, scientific, energy and environmental areas.     It is not worthy that the China-EU trade volume exceeded 425 billion U.S. dollars in 2008 in face of global slump, representing a 19.5-percent growth over the previous year.     At a time when the raging financial storm hit the world, the major tune for bilateral ties should be mutual support.     Just as what EU Commission President Jose Barroso described, China is a "crucial partner" in international efforts to counter global challenges, such as the economic and financial crisis and climate change.     Challenge also generates opportunities while posing danger to the world. When the financial crisis is raging, it also serves as a opportunity for both sides to forge stronger ties.     During the just concluded 11th China-EU summit in Prague, the two sides signed three agreements on cooperation in clean energy, science and technology, and small and medium-sized enterprises.     Wen also announced at the summit that China will send another buying mission to the EU to increase imports from Europe, a pragmatic action of China to fight against protectionism. It also signals Beijing's confidence to jointly tackle the global financial crisis with EU partners.     As the world's largest developing country and the largest bloc of developed nations respectively, China and EU need to develop steadily by clearing obstacles first, thanks to the fact that both sides enjoy huge potential and broad prospects for further cooperation.     EU should recognize China's market economy status as soon as possible, loosen its control over export restrictions on high-techproducts and lift its arms embargo to China, measures which will be conducive to nurturing new growth engines for trade and economic cooperation and expanding fields of cooperation.     Since the first China-EU summit in 1998, the international political and economic situation has experienced profound changes. In this context, the strategic and mutually beneficial partnership between the two sides has been expanded rapidly, further deepened and consolidated.     As the China-EU Summit enters a new decade, it is believed that the China-EU relations will constantly move ahead as long as both sides work together in a forward-looking manner, adhere to the principle of mutual respect, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, take into consideration of each other's core concerns and properly handle sensitive issues to refrain from harming bilateral ties by individual incidents.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said.     Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.
