OTTAWA, March 9 (Xinhua) -- China and Canada have officially kicked off a series of celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. As one of the opening events, the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra (CBCO) staged a 2010 Spring Festival Gala Concert on Monday night at Southam Hall of the National Arts Center in Ottawa. The grand show, which featured over 30 different kinds of traditional Chinese musical instruments, attracted an audience of around 2,000, among whom were senior Canadian officials and Chinese Ambassador to Canada Lan Lijun.Chinese Ambassador to Canada Lan Lijun (C) and President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Stockwell Day (R) cut the ribbon for an exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of the Sino-Canadian relation ties in Ottawa, capital of Canada, March 9, 2010Addressing a reception before the show, Ambassador Lan said that the China-Canada diplomatic ties, which were forged on Oct. 13, 1970, have moved forward thanks to the personal commitment of leaders of several generations and concerted efforts of people from various sectors in both countries. "Our exchanges and cooperation in all fields have been growing steadily and exchanges at the top and other levels have increased, " Lan noted. He said that China stands ready to work with Canada, with a strategic and long-term perspective, to seize the opportunity brought by the 40th anniversary to review the past and plan for the future, and jointly forge an even better future. On the same occasion, Canadian Speaker of the Senate Noel Kinsella said it is encouraging to see the two countries continuing to work together in a constructive and cooperative manner."The fact that we were able to put aside our differences at the height of the Cold War and work together for a better future makes me believe that our partnership can withstand the most difficult challenges that might come our way," he said. The Speaker also praised the hard-working Chinese immigrants who endured difficult conditions long before the two countries established diplomatic ties, as they helped build the Canadian Pacific Railway, which played a critical role in history. On the eve of the concert, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also sent a greeting message, saying that the wonderful evening of beautiful music was a great opportunity to share Chinese culture with Canadians as more than a billion people around the world welcomed the Year of the Tiger."It is a time of great expectations and an occasion to recognize the significant contributions of Chinese Canadians," Harper added.Established in 1957, the CBCO has performed at Konzerthaus Berlin, Lincoln Center, John F. Kennedy Center and Moscow Tchaikovsky Concert Hall over the past five decades. Its world- class Chinese New Year Concert has also become a classic event at the Golden Hall of Vienna since 2003. This is the Orchestra's first visit to Canada.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 -- The government is considering evacuating all Chinese nationals from the Haiti disaster zone, Foreign Ministry officials said Monday. If local conditions become too difficult and no country can offer shelter to the Chinese living in Haiti, the government is prepared to evacuate all nationals, Wei Wei, director of the ministry's consular department, said.Apart from the Chinese in Haiti on governmental or other business, Wei said he believed there are about 10 other nationals in Haiti - mainly working for mainland companies or at local Chinese restaurants - as well as about 20 illegal immigrants.Amid the ongoing relief efforts following the 7.0-magnitude quake, the capital Port-au-Prince has been hit by sporadic violence and looting. However, Wei said that all Chinese nationals there have been safely accommodated.A chartered flight took 11 staff of ZTE, a Chinese communications technology company, to neighboring Dominican Republic on Friday. There are also about 30 Taiwan residents in Haiti and, although Wei had no specific details, he said the government would provide help to anyone who requested it. One Taiwan resident has asked for help, he said without elaborating.About 230 Chinese were in Haiti at the time of the disaster. Most are safe but eight Chinese police officers on a peacekeeping mission died in a collapsed United Nations building. Their bodies were being flown home last night on a chartered flight.More than 50,000 people have died in the aftermath of the quake, and the final death toll could be as high as 200,000, according to Paul Antoine Bien-Aime, the nation's interior minister. And while the disaster last Tuesday may have happened on the other side of the world, the shock has been felt deeply in China, especially in Sichuan province, where residents are still recovering from the 8-magnitude quake that struck there on May 12, 2008, and killed more than 69,000."Hearing about this disaster in Haiti, although it is far away, it is as if the cracks beneath our feet have opened up again. It has all come rushing back for us," said Li Yong, a farmer in Beichuan, the county worst hit by the 2008 quake. The horrific disaster brings back bad memories for the people who lived through the Wenchuan earthquake. Huang Zhiling in Chengdu, Guo Anfei in Kunming and Wang Shanshan in Beijing reportLi Yong's family lost their home in the 2008 disaster and now live in a shabby temporary home built with wooden boards. His 18-year-old son, Li Anqiang, also had both legs amputated after being pulled from the rubble of the collapsed Beichuan Middle School. Many of his classmates were killed.Apart from what they make selling potatoes, the family survives on a monthly government subsidy of just 800 yuan (0), which is paid to them to help care for Li Anqiang. But despite the family's struggles, Li Yong said they are desperate to help those left in similar situations by the 7.3-magnitude quake in Haiti."We heard about the deaths through our neighbors. The people in Haiti are much poorer than we are, and we really want to help them. I hope that we can do something for them," he said. "Our life is good. After what we have gone through, we really feel sorry for the people in Haiti."Many in Sichuan, particularly children, are still in too much trauma to hear the word "earthquake", said Wang Zhihang, 53, a volunteer who tours schools in the area offering emotional support to victims."Those children who have been able to face the reality of the disaster in Haiti have shown real concern for the victims. Most have already joined in with fundraising events at schools across the province," said Wang, who is based in the provincial capital, Chengdu. The people in Sichuan understand full well the kind of relief operation that is now under way in Haiti. For those who were close to the epicenter in 2008, such as 20-year-old student Wang Li, they will also be able to understand the true terror of being trapped for hours by rubble.Wang was attending class at her middle school in Xiaode when the disaster struck - and was on the fourth floor when the building collapsed."The disaster in Haiti reminds me of the hours I was trapped in the dark. I was there for one day and one night," she said. "I passed out immediately when the building fell, but when I regained consciousness I could see I was buried under rock with two classmates. I knew one of them was dead. I called her name but she didn't respond. I reached out and checked her pulse, but her heart had already stopped beating."Wang lost her left leg in the disaster and had to take the national college entrance exam in a hospital ward during her recovery. She now studies at Chongqing Electronic and Engineering College."As I am a student, I cannot help out the Haitians financially but I feel their agony. All I can do is to pray for them," she said.Wei Min, 18, also lost a leg in the Sichuan earthquake. She was so moved by the kindness shown by strangers during her treatment in Chongqing, she has set her heart on a career in social work as a way to repay some of the compassion she experienced."With international aid, I believe Haiti will recover, although the process of recovering from an earthquake is lengthy," said Wei, who is from a poor farming family in Leigu, Beichuan county.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The threat of inflation to China's economy is less worrisome compared with asset bubble, economists said Saturday at the China Development Forum 2010.China's economy is facing a new round of growth in the coming two years, but the risks of inflation and asset bubble remain, said Fan Gang, secretary general of the China Reform Foundation.Compared with inflation, tackling asset bubble is of greater importance because asset bubble, as one of the causes for this round of global financial crisis, is more dangerous, Fan said. He expected the country's economy to grow 8 to 9 percent this year in a "normal growth."Growth in China's property prices is accelerating and approaching an alarming level, said Nomura Holdings Inc. chairman Junichi Ujiie.Despite government measures to curb property prices, China's property market grew at its fastest pace in 20 months in February, with housing prices in 70 major cities rising 10.7 percent from a year ago.

BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang Thursday called for efforts to ensure the nation's sound development and stability, to ensure the safe operation of the economy.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks after hearing reports from government departments and major enterprises in the transportation and power supply sectors. He stressed the significance of the adjustment of the economic development mode, saying the adjustment would help improve the sectors' development quality and expand their space for development."Our country is still in a stage where conflicts are likely to arise," he said.He asked relevant authorities to handle conflicts and disputes properly, and to boost efforts to prevent them from taking root in the first place by balancing interests and relations between different groups of people. He also called for an "all-out" effort to ensure sound operation during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday and the two national sessions of the country's top legislative and advisory bodies. He asked relevant authorities and companies to guard against workplace and public security accidents, and to ensure supplies of coal, electricity, oil, and gas during the festive period. The Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year begins Sunday this year and the holiday lasts for a week. The annual sessions of the country's legislative and advisory bodies, the National People's Congress (NPC) and the the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), to be held in March, are China's two most important political gatherings

LOS ANGELES, March 9 (Xinhua) -- A China automaker has made headlines in California as it is considering locating its U.S. office and assembly line in the state, local media reported on Tuesday. The office and assembly line are expected to create high-paying jobs in a state hard-hit by the recent recession. The Chinese automaker BYD, or Build Your Dreams, may really build a dream in California after it has teamed up with German automaking giant Daimler-Benz to manufacture an A-class electric vehicle.China's BYD F6DM, powered by electric motors and gasoline engine, is displayed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), in Detroit, the United States, JaN. 11, 2009.As one of the world's largest rechargeable battery and consumer electronics makers, BYD entered the U.S. market this year with its electric car model BYD e6 through the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The first batch of such cars is to hit markets in Europe, the United States and China as early as next year.Morale-boosted by the BYD intention, local authorities from both the Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City reportedly met BYD executives to woo the firm to locate its office and assembly line on their premises.Several other places including Long Beach and Lancaster have also joined the race to attract the attention of China's fourth biggest carmaker."It would be a tremendous boost to our economy and economic growth and prosperity," said Tony Bell, spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich. As the largest auto market in the United States, California has recently seen a mushrooming of so-called "green tech" firms involved in the research and production of electric and other alternative energy vehicles.BYD is expected to produce better versions of electric cars by adding its long-life rechargeable battery to Benz chassis and transmission. The e6's, an all-electric crossover car, already are claimed to reach a range of 400 kilometers per charge.Though local pundits claim that California is the right place for BYD to locate its U.S. office and assembly line, BYD executives remained silent on the issue.Local authorities have made wooing BYD to open business in California their top priority, hoping the addition of the Chinese electric car maker would help create in California a new and greener Detroit.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's education authorities have banned employment of new substitute teachers, but denied a deadline for dismissing those still at work."Governments at all levels must ensure the inflow of qualified teachers and prohibit any school from taking on more substitute teachers," said Lu Yugang, deputy director of the personnel department of the Ministry of Education.Longtime employment of substitute teachers would not only impair the interests of students but also be unfair for the teachers as they are usually low paid, Lu said. However, the role of substitute teachers played and the contribution they made should not be forgotten, Lu said. "We cannot just tell them to leave the school and go home."Discussions about the future of substitute teachers have been featured prominently in newspapers and on websites in recent days, as it was reported all the substitute teachers would be dismissed in 2010.Substitute teachers are more often seen in poor places, mostly rural villages, as local governments could not afford to employ enough licensed teachers.By the end of 2008, China had about 311,000 substitute teachers, according to the ministry.Lu said the substitute teachers qualified for the job should be given opportunity to be formally recruited while those who were dismissed should be compensated. In recent years, substitute teachers have been gradually replaced by graduates from normal universities as the government invested more in the education in rural areas.
