BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first seven companies applying for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-alike market in China, have got green lights from the country's securities regulator on Thursday.     They are in the fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars), from the IPOs, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     "This means the seven enterprises are eligible to list on the market, but they still have some flaws in information issuance, which need to be improved," said Jiang Xinhong, a member of the review commission.     The flaws don't hinder the listings, but these enterprises should go through some necessary procedures before getting listed, said the CSRC.     The CSRC had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10, since it started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- As typhoon Morakot gains momentum and churns toward China's mainland, provinces in coastal regions are busy bracing for its impact.     By 5 p.m. Thursday, the typhoon was located at 23.3 degrees north and 126.7 degrees east, about 780 kilometers away from Wenzhou, a major city in Zhejiang Province, meteorological authorities said. It was expected to land in the eastern Zhejiang or Fujian provinces between Saturday noon and Sunday morning. Soldiers help fishermen go to safe zone in the rain in Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, Aug. 6, 2009. It is predicted that the typhoon Morakot will land off the seashore in east China's Zhejiang Province and southeast China's Fujian Province from Saturday noon to Sunday morning. In Zhejiang province 2,076 ships had returned to harbor by 3 p.m. while passenger liner services in Wenzhou and Taizhou cities were suspended.     More than 900 Chinese and foreign tourists have been evacuated from from the resort Nanji Island, and measures taken in scenic areas near the coast to assist tourists.     Seventeen teams comprising 138 soldiers are preparing for emergencies, and working with local officials to ascertain potentially hazardous areas. In adjacent Fujian province, nearly 8.4 million short messages had been sent to mobile phone users by 5:30 p.m., warning them to prepare for the typhoon. Soldiers help fishermen transport cases of fish in Putian City of southeast China's Fujian Province, Aug. 6, 2009. Provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters ordered fishing boats and construction vessels to seek shelter in harbors before 6 p.m. Thursday.     As of 6 p.m., more than 1,200 vessels had returned to harbors and 5,242 people had been evacuated in Fujian's Ningde, Putian and Fuzhou. Sea waves as high as six meters battered fish farms.     Weather forecasters said the most severe typhoon this year would push sea waves in the coastal areas to up to nine meters high when it approaches. Fishing vessels are seen in the Shenjiamen Port to avoid typhoon in Zhoushan City, east China's Zhejiang Province, Aug. 6, 2009Local authorities have warned the public to pay attention to weather forecasts and be aware of the rainstorms and other typhoon-related disasters.     More than 180 policemen are on duty in Quanzhou city, helping those in danger areas to evacuate.     Morakot, which strengthened into typhoon Wednesday afternoon, is also expected to whip up gales in Shanghai from Saturday to Monday. Meteorological stations in the city have cautioned relevant departments to brace for emergencies. Soldiers help fishermen strengthen rafts in Wenzhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, Aug. 6, 2009.Experts in Guangdong Province say although the typhoon won't land there its impact could be great. Bilis, a 2006 typhoon landed in Fujian but tens of thousands of people in Guangdong were affected.     The experts considered Morakot might have a big influence in the eastern part of Guangdong, and soak the province in torrential rains.     The eighth tropical storm this year, Morakot was formed on the heels of Goni, which unleashed downpours in Guangdong destroying 732 houses.     "The two storms could influence each other," said Wang Zhenming, vice head of the Zhejiang provincial meteorological station. "As a result, the route of Morakot is not fully predictable."     He warned Morakot was likely to continue growing in strength and become a super typhoon.     China is frequently affected by tropical storms in summer. The most destructive one recently occurred in 2006, when super typhoon Saomai claimed more than 400 lives.

URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior government official said Friday the situation in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was under control after local residents had taken to the streets over two days to protest against hypodermic syringe attacks.     There were no major protests in the city Friday, a day after massive protests that left five people dead Thursday, said Executive Deputy Mayor Zhang Hong. Deputy Mayor of Urumqi Zhang Hong speaks during a news conference in Urumqi, capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Sept. 4, 2009. Zhang Hong said on Friday the situation was basically under control in the citySmall crowds gathered "in a few locations" Friday, but soon dispersed and nobody was killed, said Zhang.     Syringe attacks carried out since Aug. 20 have resulted in panic and resentment from the public, the official said.     Suspects were caught Wednesday when attacking members of the public. They were beaten by a angry crowd and one was seriously injured. People gather on a street in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Sept. 4, 2009. Police were exerting efforts to control the situation in Urumqi on Friday. Five people have been confirmed dead and 14 others injured and hospitalized following Thursday's protests, Zhang said.     Of the five dead, two had been confirmed as innocent civilians, while police are trying to identify the remaining three.     He said investigations showed those carrying out the syringe attacks were from the Uygur ethnic group while the attacked included Han Chinese and other ethnic groups. Residents go around at a market on Meiqi Lane in Urumqi, capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Sept. 4, 2009. By Thursday, local hospitals had dealt with 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings, 106 of whom showed obvious signs of needle attacks.     Zhang said the attacks were premeditated and organized to create terror in society.     "The 'three forces' (separatism, terrorism and extremism) at home and abroad are not willing to see ethnic unity and their failure when the July 5 violence died down quickly," he said. "So they are using 'soft violence' to disrupt social order and instigate ethnic hatred."     China's Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu arrived in Urumqi Friday to direct work to defuse ongoing unrest in the city.     Meng, also a State Councillor, urged local governments and Communist Party of China (CPC) committees at all levels in Xinjiang "to restore social order as soon as possible."     "Maintaining stability is the central task of overriding importance in Xinjiang at the present time," he said in a meeting with local officials.     Meng said the spate of syringe attacks, which were premeditated, masterminded and conducted by law-breakers and instigated by ethnic separatist forces, were a continuation of the July 5 riot in the city which left 197 people dead. He said the separatists' purpose was to undermine ethnic unity.

Nur Bekri, chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region government, holds a meeting with diplomatic envoys in Urumqi, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on Aug. 10, 2009.The Chinese central government and the local government of Xinjiang exercised great restraint during the incident and took effective measures to stop the violence, said Ama, also head of the diplomatic delegation.     He said that violence can only escalate conflicts but cannot solve any problem.     "No government in the world will tolerate the 'three evil forces' and the adherence to 'one China' policy is in the interests of all nations," he said.     "We hope we can learn more about the truth of the incident through the visit," he added.     Nur Berkri briefed the guests about the development of Xinjiang over the past several decades and stressed that the region's rapid development came from the great support of the central government.     He said that the July 5 riot, which left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 others injured, involved very few violent rioters and they cannot represent the Xinjiang people and the Muslims.     "Not a single person in the religious circle participated in the violence," he said. "Violence is not allowed in any sovereignty and law-ruled nation."

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- If education is the cornerstone for the nation's development, teachers are the cornerstone for education, said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in a speech during a visit to a high school in Beijing on Sept. 4 this year. Xinhua News Agency published the 8,000-character speech, entitled "Teachers are Fundamental to the Great Cause of Education", on Sunday.     Wen listened five classes and had lunch with students at the No. 35 Middle School, and attended a workshop with teachers of the school.     It was a way to show his tribute to teachers ahead of the Teachers Day, which falls on Sept. 10 every year, and also a way to find out the actual situation of teaching, said the outspoken premier who then gave his own comments on what he saw in class. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) meets with teacher representatives before a symposium at Beijing No. 35 Middle School in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 4, 2009. Ahead of China's 25th Teacher's Day, which falls on Sept. 10, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on teachers across the country to enhance their teaching standards and do a good job    Wen first attended a math class focusing on triangular congruence. He praised the math teacher for her heuristic teaching method when she tried to guide the students to find out the solution by themselves. Being a geologist himself, Wen suggested that students be taught a little bit more in a 40-minute class.     After listening a Chinese Language lesson, the premier advised that the teacher should give an introduction on the author of "The Reeds Marshes", one of the works of Sun Li, a well-known Chinese writer.     "The teacher was wise to let her students go through the 3,300-character a story on Anti-Japanese War silently in four minutes, in an attempt to train their fast-reading skill," said Wen, who described it a "surprise" to him, because he was never told to do so in his school days.     It also a surprise to the State leader that most of the students completed the fast reading and some students were asked to summarize the story by their own. It trained the skills of their logic thinking and summarizing ability, said the premier. He also praised the teacher for her effort in teaching his students about patriotism.     The third class was about the method of research, which is unfamiliar with the premier. "After the class, I realized that the class was designed to help students broaden their view," he said. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) talks with students at Beijing No. 35 Middle School in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 4, 2009. Ahead of China's 25th Teacher's Day, which falls on Sept. 10, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on teachers across the country to enhance their teaching standards and do a good job. What the teacher and students discussed at the class was the concept of "teaching room". The teacher asked the students to figure out what composes a "teaching room".     The premier was a little critical about this class as both the teacher and the students failed to mention the issue of safety of a "classroom", such as the occurrence of earthquake, for instance.     At the class, the teacher shunned away from a student's question about ore. The premier once again showed his geological background by suggesting that students be taught something more about the nature. "A teacher is unlikely to know everything, but he can think over the question and give a reply next time," Wen said.     After the fourth class on geography, the premier was once again surprised to learn that many of the students had traveled a lot, at home and abroad.     Wen found some errors in the geographic textbook, which gives a wrong description about China's geographic regions. "North China" should not include Shaanxi and Gansu provinces and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, which are officially regarded as part of northwest China.     The fifth and last was a music class. The teacher first let the students enjoy "We Are the World", one of the best-know works of Michael Jackson. The premier said , "I felt as if it was an artistic training class."     The class's topic of love guided the erudite leader to talk about aesthetics and the best-known Chinese aesthetician Zhu Guangqian. At the class, the premier made an improvisation on the issue of love. He also told the students about some Chinese scientists who were well-learned on other subjects such as arts, music and literature .     In a discussion with teachers, Wen said China failed to foster enough outstanding talents to meet the needs of the nation. Although the country has fostered a large number of professionals, the number of Chinese scientists who have gained an international reputation is too small, he said.     Wen quoted Czech educator John Amos Comenius (1592-1670) as saying, "Teacher is the most splendid profession under the Sun."     According to the premier, China had about 16 million teachers, including 12 million elementary and middle school teachers.     Wen called for bold reforms in the educational sector. China needs a large number of educators with a penetrating judgement on running schools, said the State leader. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) plays games with a student at Beijing No. 35 Middle School in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 4, 2009. Ahead of China's 25th Teacher's Day, which falls on Sept. 10, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on teachers across the country to enhance their teaching standards and do a good job.The premier said education must meet the requirements of its own development law; the requirements of the changes of times, the requirements of the country in building a socialism with China's own characteristics; and the requirements of the "human-based" principle.     Teachers should be an "envoy of kindness", an "avatar of sincere love", and an "excellent-character" and "very skillful" educator with a "lofty professional moral", said the premier.     He urged teachers to be full of love and loyalty to their cause, be diligent in research and be qualified for their profession, and behave themselves as a model for students.     Wen also disclosed that a student had written to him on the issue of students' suicide. The student told him that many students had turned to suicide at a very young age, asking the premier to have a dialog with students on line on Sept. 1, the day for a new academic year.     The number of suicidal students has been very small, but "it must draw great attention," Wen said.     He urged governments at all levels to support the educational sector and make concerted efforts to improve the working and living conditions of teachers.
