MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- As the special guests of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, 50 students from China's quake-hit Sichuan province Wednesday visited the glittering Andrew Hall of the Kremlin, and had a joyous time with the Russian president.     "I hope that you will make friends with more Russian children during your rehabilitation in our country," Medvedev said in his speech, describing the students as "little heroes" in the relief work following the devastating earthquake.     These middle and primary school students, who were recuperating in a rehabilitation center in southwest Russia's coastal city of Tuapse before coming to Moscow, are the representatives of some 1,000 children who would arrive in Russia for further recovery in 2008. Medvedev asked as he walked in the crowd with a smile on his face.     "Beautiful!" "Enthusiastic!" "Hospitable!" the children strived to answer.     "Have you swum in the Black Sea? Is the water cold?" the president went on to ask.     "It's not cold!" they consented with one voice. I will certainly read it, with the help of a translator," he said.     The children presented Medvedev with some Chinese calligraphy works and embroidery as gifts. BEIJING, April 25 -- The key mainland stock index yesterday soared 9.29 percent, the biggest one-day jump in six years, as investor sentiment was boosted by the government lowering of stamp duty.     The slashing of trading tax from 0.3 percent to 0.1 percent, effective yesterday, was widely seen as another government effort to lift the stock market from the doldrums it has been in for six months.     It followed the introduction of trading rules last Sunday to mitigate the impact of an expected flood of previously non-tradable shares after the lock-in period, which could greatly depress the market. Investors look over information at a stock exchange at a stock trading hall in Beijing, April 24, 2008. Equities trading tax cut, which is widely believed as policy boost by government to stem the recent slump, sends Chinese shares 9.29 percent higher on Thursday, the biggest gain since Oct 23, 2001    The Shanghai Composite Index yesterday surged 304.7 points to close at 3583.03.     In yesterday's trading, gainers outnumbered losers by 853 to 1. The Shenzhen Component index jumped 9.59 percent, or 1130.61 points to close at 12914.76. Total market capitalization swelled 9.2 percent to 22.94 trillion yuan (.3 trillion).     Turnover on the two bourses more than doubled from the day before to 261 billion yuan ( billion), the highest this year.     Analysts said the reduction in the stamp duty and restrictions on the sale of unlocked shares showed that the market has fallen as low as the government would like to see.     "The timing of the stamp duty cut suggests that the 3000 point may be a psychological bottom line for policymakers," said Peng Cheng, an economist at Citi China.     "The government had been patient in waiting until the market correction was more than 50 percent before taking action," Peng added.     Xu Wei, an analyst at Sinolink Securities, estimated that the cut in stamp duty saves investors up to 102 billion yuan (.7 billion) a year.     In addition, "the relatively lower A-share valuation and the more stable performance of overseas stock markets have combined to help investors regain confidence," said Rui Kun, a fund manager at China international Fund Management Co Ltd.     Security companies, especially those focusing on brokerage services, will benefit from the increasingly active trading because of the stamp tax cut, analysts said.     Shanghai-based Haitong Securities, Sinolink Securities and Guoyuan Securities soared to the daily limit of 10 percent.     However, some market insiders said that weak fundamentals and unfavorable China economic growth data are likely to outweigh the positive impact of the government move, and the rebound may not last long.     "It is doubtful that such administrative measures can have a sustained effect on shares when earnings face significant challenges in the periods ahead," said Peng at Citi China.     "The cumulative effect of tightening policies and rising input costs, along with shrinking demand, could cut profits more deeply than what is currently evident," Peng added.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. At least 10 people were killed. An armed police soldier help a villager dress her wound in Damxung County, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Oct. 7, 2008. More than 350 armed police officials and soldiers were dispatched to attend the quake-relief work immediately after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Damxung County near Lhasa at 4:30 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Monday.    Cars were shaken for a few seconds in Yangyi Village, the worst-hit area in the first quake, but no major damage was reported in the county, according to Zhu Quan, head of the Tibet earthquake bureau.     However, Lhasa residents felt the aftershock and poured into the streets carrying food, drinking water and blankets. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Thursday the country is fully confident and capable of overcoming the current economic difficulties, vowing to work closely with other countries to safeguard stability of the global financial market.     Wang, in his meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, said China has already taken relevant measures to face up to the turbulences of the international financial market.     As the largest developing country and a rising market, China's priority is to well handle its own problems, he said.     He believes China has great potential in domestic market and economic growth, adding the country would continue to take measures to maintain the stable and relatively fast economic development.     "The Chinese government is to strengthen coordination with other countries to face up to the global crisis and promote the stability of the global economic and financial market," Wang told Schroeder.     He appreciated the former German Chancellor's contribution to cementing bilateral ties. Regarding both countries as important trade, investment and technical cooperation partners, Wang said to further facilitate bilateral trade cooperation complies with the fundamental interests of both sides.     Schroeder extended congratulations to China's full success in holding the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. He hopes the two countries to step up cooperation in various areas to push forward bilateral ties.

BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- China's military would increase cooperation with foreign armed forces in order to contribute more to common development, Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said on Thursday.     At a reception at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to mark the 81st anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Liang said, "China will take the road of peaceful development, unswervingly, and carry out an independent and self-reliant, peaceful diplomatic policy and a defensive defense policy, no matter how the international situation changes."     A member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and a state councilor, Liang stressed the fundamental necessity of the Army's acceptance of "the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC)". A reception is held by the Denfense Ministry of China to celebrate the 81st Army Day which will fall on August 1, 2008 in Beijing, China, on July 31, 2008. China would never take to hegemonism and expansionism and posed no threat to any other country, Liang said.     He noted the "positive changes" regarding the situation across the Taiwan Straits, while pointing out that pro-independence forces in Taiwan had never abandon their activities.     "We are strongly determined to oppose and curb the separatist activities of 'Taiwan independence' forces," he said.     The mainland would show its utmost sincerity and exert its greatest efforts for the welfare of Chinese compatriots on both sides of the Straits, to seek peace, safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. A reception is held by the Denfense Ministry of China to celebrate the 81st Army Day which will fall on August 1, 2008 in Beijing, China, on July 31, 2008. Military officers of Foreign Embassies in China and their wives also attend the reception. Liang also praised the efforts of the armed forces during the severe winter weather chaos at the start of the year and after the May 12 earthquake.     The reception was attended by other CMC members, including Chen Bingde, Li Jinai, Liao Xilong, Jing Zhiyuan, Wu Shengli and Xu Qiliang, as well as foreign military attaches.     In August 1927, the CPC-led armed forces held an uprising against warlords, which is regarded as the founding day of the services. reception is held by the Denfense Ministry of China to celebrate the 81st Army Day which will fall on August 1, 2008 in Beijing, China, on July 31, 2008. BEIJING, May 28 -- China's economy can maintain a steady growth above 8 percent for a relatively long period because of a stable society, a vast market and ample capital, said Cheng Siwei, an economist and former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.    "China's economy can stay in the fast developing track if we work hard and pay enough attention to existing problems," Cheng said at a three-day forum with the theme of "Economic globalization and the choice of Asia: transition, growth and welfare" Wednesday in Shanghai.     "Social stability is crucial to economic development while China has a market of 1.3 billion people, which creates a huge consumption power," said Cheng. "Meanwhile, China's foreign reserves have reached US.68 trillion, and it has built up an ample capital pool."     China also beefed up its efforts to improve education and expand its coverage, which paved the way for sustainable economic development, he said, but added that there were problems China could not afford to ignore. File photo of Cheng Siwei    One of them was the yawning gap between the rich and the poor. The income of urban residents has tripled that of rural households while the purchasing power in cities was four times larger than that in rural areas.     China faced increasing pressure to protect the environment and in securing raw materials and resources for its economy. It also lacks a large pool of senior professionals in finance and management.     "For example, we buy a lot of the United States treasury bonds. It means appointing them (US bond managers) to manage our assets and we only gained a little bit of interest," said Cheng. "We are trying to work on such problems."     Cheng estimated China's per capita GDP can reach US,000 by 2010, US,000 by 2020 and US,000 by 2049, given its economic expansion and a stronger yuan.

ROME, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Food security in China is guaranteed despite the recent major earthquake and heavy snowfalls earlier this year, China's Agriculture Minister Sun Zhengcai said in an interview with Xinhua.     "The earthquake will not change the nation-wide situation of agricultural production this year since local output of the affected area is quite small compared to that of the whole country," Sun said, who was attending a world summit here on soaring food prices, hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).     An 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern China in May, with its epicenter in Wenchuan County, a mountainous area of Sichuan province, with the death toll currently at over 70,000 people and causing massive economic loss.     Sun acknowledged local agricultural production was in no way immune from damage. A farmer harvests wheat in the Hailing District of Taizhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, June 3, 2008. The harvest season for nearly 19,000 hectares of wheat in Taizhou started on June 3.    "The damage was mainly to planted crops and livestock," he said, adding an urgent harvesting and planting effort has helped minimize the impact and which had no national implications.     The devastating earthquake struck following severe snow and ice storms that swept southern China early this year, giving rise to concerns about food shortages in the world's most populous country.     However, Sun said food security remains guaranteed because of sufficient stockpiles and a big harvest ahead.     "This year, China's agriculture has prevailed over disasters of snow and ice storms and the extremely severe earthquake, and our summer grains and oilseeds are set to harvest good crops," he said.     Since 2004, food production in China has increased for four consecutive years and the total grain output exceeded 500 million tons last year.     Sun said China's grain reserves are currently abundant and there is enough supply of major farm products to offset the effects of the two natural disasters.     If there are no more major disasters, China is expected to have a big summer harvest this year, with grain output set to rise for the fifth consecutive year. Even in southern China, oilseeds, which had been feared to drop due to the snowfalls, would reverse the declining trend in the previous three years.     Sun said as a huge, developing country with 1.3 billion people, China has always paid great attention to food and agricultural development.     The Chinese government will continue to adhere to the food security policy of basic self-sufficiency, complemented by imports and exports to readjust surplus and shortfalls, he said.
