SINGAPORE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The first informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Six-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue concluded here on Wednesday with "very meaningful results", Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said.     In a news briefing after the close-door talks on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, Yang said that the Six-Party Talks have "very meaningful results", adding that they exchanged views and deepened understanding and expressed the will of continued pushing forward the Six-Party Talks further.     Yang said, "with joint efforts, the six parties agreed that the initial success has been achieved" and the informal talks "made useful preparation for the formal Six-Party Ministerial Talks in early day".     The Chinese foreign minister said the six parties reaffirmed they will earnestly fulfill their commitment to the signed joint statements and related documents.     Yang said all agreed the Six-Party Talks are an important platform for exchanging views and enhancing understanding, adding that the six parties should continue to enhance their exchanges so as to "achieve mutual benefit and win-win progress". Chief delegates of the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue ended talks on July 12, agreeing to establish a verification mechanism for denuclearization.

KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation. Those delayed within two hours of departure and without accommodation would get 100 yuan. Those delayed within eight hours of departure would get 200 yuan, said an official with the Yunnan branch of the carrier on Tuesday.     The compensation was set according to a guideline notice released by the general Administration of Civil Aviation, the official said.     From March 31 to April 1, 21 flights returned to their departure points in Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, leaving more than 1,000 passengers stranded at Kunming Airport, the capital of Yunnan.     "The time and energy we have wasted could never be compensated by 400 yuan," said Yu Xiaoyan, a tourist from the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Yu planned to take the MU5793 flight at 9:50 a.m. on March 31 from Kunming to Xishuangbanna. The plane never came after waiting for seven hours at the airport.     She was offered a ticket change at 4 p.m. on April 1 and received 400 yuan compensation.     CEA finally admitted on Monday that some pilots on the 21 flights deliberately turned their aircraft around while in flight.     It originally said the incidents were due to poor weather. However flights with other airlines flying the same routes landed on schedule during the same period.     The airline has suspended the pilots. Further probing is underway, said an announcement on the company's website.

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) urged local governments to strengthen flood control at a meeting here on Thursday.     Water resources authorities should double check the preparation work for the incoming flood season, strengthen monitoring systems and ensure the safety of major rivers and large- and medium-sized reservoirs, it said.     It also asked relevant authorities in quake zones to pay special attention to flood control and protect earthquake victims from fresh dangers.     Flood control precautions and safe water supplies in cities holding competitions for the 2008 Olympic Games in August should be ensured. It added that drought prevention work should also be listed on the agenda.     The SFDH initiated a level-three emergency response to the torrential rains that hit China over the past week causing 57 deaths.

XIANGFEN, Shanxi, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers continued to search for the missing in last Monday's fatal mud-rock flow in north China's Shanxi Province that killed 254 people and injured 34 to date.     No new bodies were found from 6 p.m. on Sunday to 6 p.m. on Monday. Rescuers were continuing to search in areas designated by the family members of the missing, according to Lian Zhendong, the rescue operation's chief.     "We will not stop the rescue work in a short time," he said. "We will do our best to make the family members of the missing see their relatives." Rescue workers work on the ruins at the key spot of the mud-rock flow in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, north China's Shanxi Province, Sept. 15, 2008A rain-triggered mud-rock flow happened around 7:50 a.m. on Sept. 8 when the bank of a pond holding waste ore dregs burst at the Tashan Mine in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, destroying buildings, trade markets and residences lying about 500 meters downstream.     The death toll has risen to 254, 151 of whom have been identified. The 34 injured, four seriously, were being treated in hospital.     An initial investigation showed that factors leading to the accident included the production and building of the pond was in violation of regulations. The mine also lacked a security checkup, failed to implement the orders for straightening up operations, in addition to the loose supervision of concerned safety departments.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, has ordered a nationwide safety check at similar production sites to root out hidden risks following the deadly accident.

I feel deeply sorry for those dead brothers," said Pu Taihua, a rescuer in Beichuan, tears mixing with sweat on his face.     Although rescuers are being challenged by the rugged terrain and aftershocks in Sichuan, more than 100,000 soldiers and rescuers are still battling to search for buried survivors.     The quake victims, who are clinging to hope that their relatives have somehow survived, also took time to join the mourning.     In Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in Sichuan, surviving students, wearing white T-shirts, stood with their heads deeply bowed. Some of them had been orphaned by the earthquake.     In Anxian County, also hit hard, more than 1,800 homeless residents gathered on open ground for the remembrance. Peng Hao, a boy who lost his father, wrapped himself in his dad's blanket and wailed plaintively with his mother.     In the Tianpeng Middle School in Pengzhou City, Sichuan, thousands of people gathered on the playground. An eerie silence was broken by cries from the crowd after a baby, Dong Chengyuan, began to wail in the arms of his grandmother.     The baby, whose grandfather died in the quake, wore a black armband that read "mourning" in Chinese.     Baby Dong's mother, Chen Jiao, said the family had cried all their tears. "When I found my dad, he was crushed by two beams, one on his neck and another on his feet. His body was almost disfigured," said Chen.     After the memorial, residents wandered around the playground, reluctant to leave.     WOUNDS WILL HEAL     From herdsmen and hearing-impaired children to elderly survivors of the deadly 1976 Tangshan earthquake, from bus drivers in Beijing to barter traders along the China-Russia border in Manzhouli, grieving Chinese are rallying against the disaster.     "My best friend died in the earthquake, but wounds will heal, homes will be rebuilt and everything will be all right," said Zhang Xiaomei, a student in the Yinghua Middle School in Deyang City.     On Monday, a downtown square in Chengdu was crammed with thousands of people who shouted "Go, Sichuan!" "Go China!" amid tears.     "The people in Sichuan are not alone. The whole China of is supporting them," said Ma Guoxi, a student in Ningxia University.     Mark Hancock, an Australian teacher in Qinghai, joined hundreds of Chinese mourners in a downtown square in Xining, capital of Qinghai Province.     "It's been a terrible catastrophe for China, for the Chinese people," he said, struggling to hold back tears. "It's a time for China to demonstrate its enormous strength to overcome the tragedy, and people all over the world are with them and supporting them," he added.     "The earthquake took away people's lives, but it will not frighten the brave Chinese people into retreat. We will get over the hardships and a stronger China will have a better future," said He Bin, a police officer of the Anhui Provincial Public Security Department. President Hu Jintao, standing atop the rubble amid aftershocks on Sunday, said through loudspeakers to the soldiers in the quake-hit Shifang City: "I truly believe that the heroic Chinese people will not yield to any difficulty!"

MIANYANG, Sichuan, 23 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao continued his second trip around the quake disaster zone on Friday, visiting surviving students in Mianyang, one of the worst-hit cities in the May 12 quake.     In a tent school, where more than 500 students from the destroyed Beichuan Middle School were studying, Wen encouraged them to study harder following the calamity.     "Let us not forget the earthquake," he told the students in a tender voice. "Then you will know what life is all about -- it is bumpy, as the roads are."     "Today, people save us and take good care of us. In the future, we will help them in return," the premier added.     "Trials and tribulations serve only to revitalize the nation," he wrote on the blackboard to encourage them. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will stick to an economic policy that focuses on curbing inflation for the rest of the year, a senior official on Wednesday told China's top legislature, as slowing output and rising prices loom over the post-Games economy.     Economic planners would exert themselves to increase supplies of necessities, closely track key prices and make price controls more effective, National Development and Reform Commission deputy chief Zhu Zhixin told the fourth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress.     "A lot of factors can drive prices up," said Zhu. "There is a strong demand for primary products, with prices hovering high on international markets, while more expensive land and labor at home will add to costs."     His statements came after China's main inflation indicator showed a deceleration in July and as the world wondered where the already slowing economy would head after the glitz of the Games.     The consumer price index was up 6.3 percent last month over July last year, lower than the 7.1 percent in June and 7.7 percent in May, as tighter monetary policies adopted last year seemed to bite.     Meanwhile, the country's economic output in the first half was 10.4 percent higher, compared with 10.6 percent in the first quarter and 12.2 percent in the first half last year.     Zhu said the output slowdown was "a moderate correction from a high level".     "The national economy is heading in the direction expected by the macro-control policy."     Zhu cited the pressures on some industries and enterprises as one of the major conflicts in the economy, saying it would take time for the latest supportive policies to show an effect and for companies to adjust.     He told the top legislature the government would continue to seek a balance between fighting inflation and maintaining growth.     Tasks for the rest of the year included improving the contribution of domestic consumption to economic growth, boosting agricultural output and increasing aid to small enterprises, he said.     The government had been focusing on preventing the economy from overheating before changing the goal to "keeping steady, rapid growth" in July.     Many analysts foresaw a loosening of the tight monetary policy to provide liquidity for enterprises, especially exporters, that were squeezed by weakening demand, credit controls and rising costs.     Earlier this month, administrators raised the export tax rebate rates for some textiles and garments, while the central bank allowed more credit to small and medium-sized enterprises.     "The fiscal and monetary policies are likely to be eased, if the current trend is a guide," said CITIC Securities analyst Zhu Jianfang. "The central bank is not expected to come up with any big tightening moves after the Olympics."
