BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The 11th China-European Union (EU) summit, after being postponed from December in France due to well-known reasons, will be held on Wednesday in the Czech capital of Prague.     The resumption within half a year shows that China and the EU can endure all kinds of difficulties and tests, and shows the common desire of both sides to consolidate and develop the bilateral relationship, and indicates that the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership is at a new historical threshold.     At the beginning of China's Lunar New Year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made a "journey of confidence" to the EU headquarters and four European countries, which hugely promoted the two sides' confidence of cooperation.     During his visit, Wen agreed with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that enhanced China-EU cooperation bears significance for the world and the China-EU summit would be held as soon as possible in 2009.     Besides, as the relationship between China and France gradually improved, conditions for the summit were ripe.     The upcoming summit will take place when the international situation is much different from earlier in the year. Both sides have common economic interests and have a broad range of global issues to cooperate on. Therefore, a healthy and stable relationship serves the core interests of both sides. Leaders from both sides need to strengthen dialogue and exchange of contacts from a global strategic perspective on the basis of equality and mutual respect.     In the face of the ongoing global financial crisis, the Prague China-EU summit is expected to push forward bilateral trade and economic cooperation which remains a key element of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.     Last year, the bilateral trade volume exceeded 400 billion U.S. dollars for the first time. The EU remains China's biggest trade partner and largest export market. Recently, the EU became China's largest source of imports while China remains the EU's second largest trade partner. China's steadily growing market presents great opportunities for European enterprises.     However, since the beginning of this year, China-EU trade has been increasingly affected by the financial meltdown. Both sides are facing a key task to strengthen trade and economic cooperation and join hands to tide over the crisis.     Sound cooperation between China and Europe, including participation in each other's stimulus plans, will help both sides fight trade and investment protectionism, boost confidence, and promote early recovery of the global economy.     In December, the UN Climate Chance Conference will be held in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and various parties are still negotiating on a final deal. The Prague summit will help China and Europe to better understand each other's position on the issue and carry out practical cooperation.     In fact, China and the EU have huge potential in cooperating in the fight against climate change. Both sides may expand cooperation in developing new energy and energy saving technologies, promoting a low-carbon economy, and making environment-friendly industries new economic growth sectors.     There is a famous Chinese saying: people should see and tackle their issues from a long-term perspective with an open eye. URUMQI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Xinjiang branch of China Charity Federation said Saturday it had received 2.03 million yuan (297,218 U.S. dollars) in donation from all walks of life for victims in the Urumqi riot.     The single largest donation is 200,000 yuan from the Xinjiang company of China Pacific Life Insurance Co., Ltd., said the federation.     Wu Jie, an employee of the insurance company, said she would like to do something for the dead and injured people. "We need to comfort the families of the dead and help the people who need medical treatment."     Maolaxifu Rishat, a businessman of the Tartar ethnic group who was the first to propose a comfort fund for riot victims, donated 5,200 yuan on behalf of 14 donators from 14 different ethnic groups.     "We pray for national unity in Xinjiang, so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious environment," he said.     Urumqi Public Transport Group, which suffered 37.6 million yuan as hundreds of its buses were torched or smashed, received 3.38 million yuan in donation from enterprises in the city. Five bus drivers of the group were killed by mobs and 57 others injured.     The riot in Xinjiang on July 5, the worst in six decades, caused a severe shortage of blood at local hospitals where more than 1,000 injured people were rushed in.     Shortly after the shortage was reported, many citizens rolled up their sleeves to donate blood.     On Friday, Urumqi's blood center announced the shortage had been eased, but donors continued to pour in.     A total of 1,315 people from 13 ethnic groups had come to the blood collection stations to donate 400,000 milliliters of blood as of 10 p.m. Friday. More than 1,000 other people have made appointments with blood collection centers to donate blood in the coming days.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's national college entrance exam saw a decrease in candidates for the first time in the past seven years, said the Ministry of Education Tuesday.     About 10.2 million people registered to attend the upcoming exam, down 3.8 percent year on year, according to the ministry.     In contrast, candidates for the exam saw a continuous increase from 2002 to 2008, jumping from 5.27 million in 2002 to 10.5 million in 2008.     This year's examinees would have more opportunities to enter colleges as they would compete for 6.29 million seats in China's universities and colleges, up four percent from last year, the ministry's figure showed.     About half of the country's provinces and regions earlier reported a decrease in candidate number. Some media reports came to the conclusion that greater employment pressure caused by the international economic downturn led to the drop.     "I don't agree with this view," said Jiang Gang, deputy director of the ministry's college students office.     "The drop of candidate number is mainly due to the decline of senior high school graduates," he said.     Jiang, however, admitted the financial crisis did inflict great pressure the country's job market.     In China, most of the candidates for higher education are students finishing three-year study in senior high schools.     Figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showed the number of senior high school graduates decreased from 8.49 million last year to 8.34 million this year. It is estimated to be 8.03 million in 2010.     College graduates are having a hard time finding jobs this year as posts are being axed due to the economic slowdown.     China has 6.11 million college students due to graduate this year, and one million from last year are still looking for jobs, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.     Known as "gao kao" in Chinese, the national college entrance exam, which falls on June 7 to 9 each year, is the largest examination in the world. The exam can change the candidates' lives in a fiercely competitive society.
