KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe.     In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation.     Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China."     China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum.     Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better.     "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. And its influence keeps growing." he said.     Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said.     Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe.     The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said.     "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said.     The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.

BUDAPEST, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, head of China's top political advisory body, on Thursday met with Hungary's parliament speaker and put forward a package of proposals for further expanding friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held talks with Szili Katalin, speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest Thursday morning.     During the meeting, Jia suggested that the two countries should maintain high-level contact so as to deepen political trust. The two countries should also expand trade and economic cooperation in a bid to promote common development. China will continue to encourage well-established companies to invest in Hungary. It will also adopt effective measures to increase imports from Hungary and encourage enterprises from both countries to carry out active and concrete cooperation, Jia said. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's securities supervisor said on Friday that the heavy slump on the country's equities market was caused by a combination of factors, both domestic and foreign.     These included a need for internal correction, increasing uncertainties on the global markets and frequent natural disasters, China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) spokesman said at a press conference.     The unsound mechanism and structure of the country's equities market worsened the situation and widened the range of the correction, he said.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.56 percent to 2,450.61 points on Friday, closing out the week slightly higher after five days of losses. The key index has tumbled nearly 60 percent from its peak in October.     However, the trend of a steady and healthy performance would remain unchanged, he said, as the country's economy maintained steady and fast growth.     CSRC would study the emerging problems, promote the improvement of basic systems and optimize the structure of fund raising, he said.     CSRC would also adjust new share supply in line with market demand, enhancing the market mechanism in regulation.     The commission has slowed new share issues this year in an effort to brake the steep index declines as any mention of new share offering would cause a sharp plunge in the index.     From January to July, CSRC only approved the new offering (at least 100 million shares) of four companies, which raised a combined 64.32 billion yuan (9.38 billion U.S. dollars). Both the frequency and amount decreased, by 64 percent and 49 percent respectively, compared with the same 2007 period.     The commission would join with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission to set up a real-time monitoring system to supervise transfer of the state-owned shares.

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday denounced the U.S. government's decision to sell arms worth of about 6.5 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said the Chinese government and people firmly opposed this action which seriously damaged China's interests and the Sino-U.S. relations.     The U.S. government, in spite of China's repeated solemn representations, on Friday notified the Congress about its plan to sell arms to Taiwan, including Patriot III anti-missile system, E-2T airborne early warning aircraft upgrade system, Apache helicopters and other equipment.     Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei has summoned the charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy to China to raise strong protest against the U.S. move, according to spokesman.     China firmly opposes to arms sales by the United States to Taiwan, said Liu, noting that this has been a consistent and clear stance of China.     The U.S. government's agreement on arms sale to Taiwan severely violated the principles set in the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the communique on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan signed on Aug. 17, 1982, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, endangered Chinese national security, and disturbed the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Liu stressed.     "It is only natural that this move would stir up strong indignation of the Chinese government and people," he said.     "We sternly warn the United States that there is only one China in the world, and that Taiwan is a part of China," Liu said.     He said nobody could shake the strong will of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose external interference, and nobody could stop the efforts to promote cross Strait exchanges and opening a new chapter of peace in cross Strait relations.     China urged the United States to recognize that it is seriously harmful to sell arms to Taiwan, Liu said, noting that the United States should honor its commitment to stick to one-China policy, abide by the three China-U.S joint communiques, and oppose the so-called "Taiwan independence".     Liu said the United States should immediately take actions to correct its mistakes, cancel the proposed arms sale, stop military links with Taiwan, and stop disturbing the peaceful development of cross Strait relations, so as to prevent further damage to the Sino-U.S. relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.     China reserved the right for taking further measures, he noted.     The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC),China's top legislature, and the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, on Saturday also express strong indignation over the U.S. arms sale plan.     The foreign affairs committee of the NPC Standing Committee and that of the CPPCC National Committee each issued a statement, stressing that people of all walks of life in China were firmly opposed to the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.     "We firmly support our government's solemn stances over this issue," the statements said.     The statements said the cross Strait relations have recently witnessed sound momentum, which accords with the interests of both Chinese and U.S. peoples. The U.S. proposed arms sale to Taiwan actually was a move disturbing the improvement of the cross Strait relations.     The statements called for the United States to immediately correct its wrongdoing, and refrain from any further moves that will damage the Sino-U.S. relations and the world peace.     China's Defense Ministry also issued a statement Saturday, condemning the U.S. move.     Defense Ministry spokesman Hu Changming said the U.S. decision has ruined the good atmosphere of cooperation that had existed between the two armed forces over recent years.     The statement also warned China reserves the right of making further reactions.

GUANGZHOU, June 16 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province was facing the threat of serious flooding as two swollen rivers converged in the Pearl River Delta on Monday, resulting in a flood equivalent to a worst in 50 years.     The runoff in Xijiang River was 46,800 cubic meters per second and in Beijiang River 15,200 cubic meters per second before they met each other in Foshan City, according to the Guangdong provincial headquarters of flood control and drought relief, which said this was far higher than normal.     The danger of serious flooding is made worse by the pull from the moon, which is rising to its most powerful point in the month on Wednesday, posing a threat for river embankments across the delta, experts said.     More rains were forecast in the upstream areas of Xijiang and Beijiang Rivers in next two days. They should continue to give a full play to the role of their joint economic commission, encourage and support their companies to increase contact and explore new ways and methods of cooperation.     Thirdly, the two countries should deepen cultural and humanitarian exchanges. HONG KONG, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Mainland-based telecommunications giants China Unicom and China Netcom, both listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, announced Monday that each share of Netcom will be exchanged for 1.508 Unicom shares in a proposed merger. The rate was based on the price of China Netcom shares on the Hong Kong mainboard before their suspension from trading on May 23, with a 3 percent premium, said Tong Jilu, executive director and chief financial officer of China Unicom.     Chang Xiaobing, chairman and chief executive officer of China Unicom, also said each American depository share of China Netcom will be exchanged for 3.016 American depository shares of the new China Unicom, subject to shareholders' approval. China Unicom also said it reached a framework agreement with China Telecom under which China Telecom will buy CDMA business and CDMA network from China Unicom Group.     The merger is expected to be completed in October this year after the shareholders' conferences in September if everything went ahead smoothly, Tong said.     The merged group, possibly bearing the name of China Unicom, will have an enlarged capital of 23.76 billion shares, worth a total of 439.17 billion yuan (63.28 billion U.S. dollars). It is expected to be a provider of integrated services including mobile and fixed-line telecommunications, broadband, data and value-added services.     "The merger is in line with the trend of convergence of fixed- line and mobile networks, and is expected to enable the merged group to set clear strategy," Chang said, referring to the direction for the company to pursue 3G strength.     China Unicom, currently one of the telecommunications giants in the Chinese mainland, is a far second to the largest mobile carrier China Mobile, while China Netcom is a provider of fixed line telecommunications and broadband services.     The merger was currently between the Hong Kong-listed China Unicom Limited and the China Netcom Group Corporation (Hong Kong) Limited, but not a merger between their mother companies, Chang told a press conference held in Hong Kong.     China Netcom will cease to exist as a listed firm after the merger, subject to approval from the shareholders at the company's annual conference, which is expected in September, said Zuo Xunsheng, chairman and chief executive officer of China Netcom.     Shares of both companies will resume trading on Hong Kong exchange on Tuesday.     The merger was part of a major regrouping in the Chinese telecom industry aimed at more competition by forming three providers of integrated services after regrouping.     State authorities issued an announcement on May 24, saying that they "encouraged" a regrouping of the telecom corporations to form three providers of integrated services to increase market competition. China Mobile has recently announced a proposal to buy fixed-line operator China Tietong, or Railway Telecommunications.     At a separate press conference in Hong Kong on Monday, the HongKong listed China Telecom announced that it has reached an agreement to buy the CDMA services of China Unicom, thus making it one of the three integrated services providers, too.     China Unicom also announced at the conference that it will sell its CDMA services at 43.8 billion yuan (6.31 billion U.S. dollars)and that its mother firm China Unicom Group will sell its CDMA network at 66.2 billion yuan (9.54 billion U.S. dollars) to China Telecommunications Corporation, the mother firm of China Telecom.     Speaking at a separate press conference in Hong Kong, Wang Xiaochu, chairman and chief executive officer of China Telecom, said that the deal is expected to be completed in October, subject to shareholder approval at annual conferences in September.     China Telecom will pay for the transaction in cash, Wang said, adding that he expected the CDMA part to contribute net profit as early as 2012, although the deal could impact the earnings record of the company in short term.     The regrouping will result in three separate providers of integrated services, with most of the analysts saying that they expected China Unicom to benefit the most from the regrouping whereas the strength of China Mobile could be reduced.     Others, however, said they expected China Mobile to remain the giant among the giants and retain most of its power in the mainland telecom industry.     Chang, head of China Unicom, also warned against "over optimism" about the increased strength of the merged company, saying it required long-term effort.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.
