“We believe that Uber Eats has grown to be the largest meal delivery platform in the world outside of China based on gross bookings,” Uber wrote in its IPO filing. “We believe that our scale enables the average delivery time for Uber Eats to be faster than the average delivery time for our competitors.”
“This use of Amazon’s market power to extract incentives from local and state governments is rent-seeking and anticompetitive,” the petition says. “It is in the public interest to resist such behavior and not play into or enable it. We urge you the mayors, governors, and other elected officials, as well as economic developers and community leaders, of Amazon HQ2 finalist cities, to put an end to such an imprudent policy.”
“We are asking for racial equity assessments and community agreements to make sure that the community is supported in this, that it’s good for the community — and there’s nothing like that right now,” Costa said. She guessed that Amazon would counter that it’s providing jobs to residents.
“There really isn’t a secret,” he said. “They talk about it all the time. It’s customer focus, innovation, and thinking about the long term.”
“We don’t talk about the specifics of how much business we are doing, but we feel like it is going along in the right way,” he said.
“This means the world to me,” he said. “This opportunity provides a future for my family, for my daughters.”
