BEIJING - The crab trade across the Taiwan Strait has slowed in what should be its peak season due to picky quarantine standards put forward by the Taiwan authorities, said a Chinese mainland official here Wednesday."We hope the related non-governmental organizations from both sides will carry on negotiations so that Taiwan people can enjoy this delicacy at the right time," said Li Weiyi, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.Fresh crabs, especially those bred in East China's Jiangsu Province, have become a traditional and popular mid-autumn dish and have sold well in Taiwan.The two sides had reached an agreement on quarantine standards of crabs in July, but in August the Taiwan authorities submitted new standards requiring residues of all drugs to be undetectable, which was too picky and impractical, Li said.The mainland had exported quality and safe food, he said, adding that 99 percent of food exported to Japan and the European Union met their standards."We do expect the two sides to show sincerity and settle this problem for the benefit of consumers," he said. "We have noticed that a certain group in Taiwan is trying to discredit mainland foods. Such politically driven action will greatly harm normal trade across the Strait."In the first eight months of this year, the mainland has found 27 consignments of unqualified food imported from Taiwan. Nearly 5,000 officials were punished for squandering public funds in the first half of this year, according to the Ministry of Supervision (MOS).The government took disciplinary action ranging from warnings to dismissal against 4,866 officials from the Communist Party of China and government bodies, after an investigation found their use of funds violated rules.The joint investigation of officials suspected of using public funds for banquets, overseas tours, luxury cars or entertainment was launched earlier this year by the MOS, the Ministry of Finance, National Office of Audit, Government Offices Administration of the State Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Earlier this month, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's graft buster, slammed officials at a local procuratorate for taking an overseas tour on taxpayers' money.Xu Wenai, vice procurator-general of East China's Anhui Province, was removed from his post for wasting public funds on the trip to Finland.A delegation of 10 people from the procuratorate headed by Xu was found to have fabricated an invitation from the Finnish government in November 2006.The CCDI investigation found the delegation also tampered with business travel routes, adding a number of destination countries.The incident caused a nationwide stir, with many provinces considering tighter regulations to screen officials who plan to take overseas trips for international conferences or study.The central authorities have urged government at all levels to implement the country's anti-corruption policies and called on all Chinese officials to avoid wasting public funds.Xinhua-China Daily

XINTAI, Shandong -- Fifty million yuan (US.6 million) has been donated for miners from the two flooded collieries and their families in east China's Shandong Province by Sunday noon, according to local sources.The money shall be used for rescue work, consolation for relatives of the trapped miners, and subsidy for other miners as operation of the mines is suspended.Among the donators, the China National Coal Group Corp. was the first to offer a large amount -- one million yuan (US1,578.9). Following suit was the the adjacent Xinwen Coal mine that donated 3.2 million yuan (US1,052.6).After the accident, governments of Jinan and Qingdao, two big cities in Shandong, each donated three million yuan (US4,736.8); Jining and Laiwu, the neighboring cities of Xintai, provided two million yuan (US3,157.9) and one million yuan respectively.Individuals were also involved in the nationwide effort, among whom was Gao Runze, who donated 20,000 yuan and 10 tons of disinfectors worth about 30,000 yuan. Land authorities in six Chinese cities including Beijing have illegally charged 1.1 billion yuan (US6.7 million) on enterprises so far this year, adding fuel to the nation's soaring housing prices. This was discovered by the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top planning body, during examinations of charges on businesses in Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Jinan, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Xi'an, the Beijing News said Saturday. The amount was well beyond the total illegal charges collected by eight departments for the whole year of 2006, said Li Lei, head of NDRC's Price Supervision Department. Quoting estimates by the land authorities, which say land costs account for 20 percent to 50 percent of the housing prices, Li said the behavior of these authorities has made the runaway housing prices worse. Despite by rounds after rounds of government curbs including restrictions on housing ownership by foreigners, housing prices have rocketed in China over the last few years, to the agony of ordinary people.
