BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. He urged Beijingers to support the Green Olympics initiative and make the city greener and more beautiful before athletes from worldwide come in August. However, many have acknowledged that the city has done much to improve its air quality.     This is the fifth time since 2001 for top leaders to take part in planting at the park, where nearly 500,000 trees have been planted.     Hu said voluntary tree planting is an effective way to get everyone involved in improving the environment. "For every tree we plant today, we gain another spot of green in the future," he said.     About 2 million Beijingers took part in planting activities in the capital on Saturday, which is Beijing's 24th voluntary tree planting day. 

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- An executive meeting of the State Council (cabinet), presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, on Wednesday decided to launch national comprehensive tests of dairy products and reform the dairy industry.     According to the meeting, the incident involving the tainted Sanlu milk powder reflected chaotic industry conditions, as well as loopholes in the supervision and management of the industry.     It is necessary to learn lessons, properly deal with the incident, improve the inspection and supervision system and strengthen the management of the dairy industry, the meeting said.     The meeting also reached six other decisions and ordered governments at all levels to implement them. These decisions include: Saleswomen check the returned Sanlu brand milk powders in a supermarket in Yinchuan, capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Sept. 17, 2008.providing the best and free medical care to those sickened by melamine-contaminated milk powder,     -- confiscating and destroying all sub-standard products,     -- strictly supervising the production of dairy companies with on-site inspectors,     -- revising regulations on the supervision and management of the industry,     -- subsidizing dairy farmers and encouraging more production by those enterprises with higher-quality products and,     -- finding the cause of the incident and punishing those responsible.     The Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in the northern Hebei Province, admitted last week that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material. It issued an immediate recall of milk formula made before Aug. 6.     Three infants have died so far. There are at least 6,244 infant victims of the contaminated milk powder, of whom 158, or 2.5 percent, have acute kidney failure, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

 GUANGZHOU, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Three people were confirmed dead in mud flows and strong winds caused by Typhoon Neoguri in south China's Guangdong Province, said the provincial flood-control headquarters on Sunday.     The typhoon claimed two lives in Shenzhen City, when a mud flow inundated a section of road under construction. One person was hit and killed by an aluminum sheet blown off a stadium roof by strong gales in Zhuhai City, according a headquarters official.     The headquarters did not identify the victims. LHASA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake followed by some 1,000 aftershocks has affected more than 60,000 people in the Tibet Autonomous Region this week, the local government said in a news conference Saturday.     Since Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake struck Damxung County in Lhasa, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been monitored, including one that measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, said Gong Puguang, vice president of the regional government.     61,231 people in the region's capital have been affected and 989 houses collapsed, said Gong.     More than 4,800 people have been relocated out of the quake zone.     The quake-hit areas include Lhasa, Xigaze and Shannan regions, where 28 km of road and 11 bridges were damaged.     So far, ten people have been confirmed dead. 54 others sustained injuries, one third of those injuries are serious.     The central government allocated 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars), 11,000 tents, quilts, and other quake relief materials to the affected area.     The items were being distributed as traffic and telecommunication resumed in the area.     The local government is evaluating economic losses from the disaster.     Seismologists predict more aftershocks will hit the county but the force is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators in the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue reached a "principled consensus" here on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a Chinese official said Friday.     The top negotiators discussed the specific principles of setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK, the Chinese delegation's spokesman Qin Gang told reporters. The 34 injured, four seriously, were being treated in hospital.     An initial investigation showed that factors leading to the accident included the production and building of the pond was in violation of regulations. The mine also lacked a security checkup, failed to implement the orders for straightening up operations, in addition to the loose supervision of concerned safety departments.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, has ordered a nationwide safety check at similar production sites to root out hidden risks following the deadly accident.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China senior political advisors gathered here Wednesday, to learn about the country's economic situation and developments in the earthquake relief and reconstruction campaign.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presided over the inaugural session of the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.     Jia praised CPPCC members for their participation in the earthquake relief campaign.     The relief situation remained serious and the tasks were still very heavy, Jia said. The CPPCC was responsible and duty-bound to contribute to the relief and reconstruction work.
