BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Taxi driver Qu waited patiently in the December night chill as a gas station boy changed the price tag, which indicated China's unified fuel price cut effective early Friday morning.     The country slashed the benchmark prices for fuel from 6.37 yuan (0.93 U.S. dollar) per litre to 5.46 yuan starting Friday morning, which was earlier than the long-awaited government scheme on fuel taxation and pricing slated for Jan. 1 next year.     "The price cut of 0.91 yuan per litre means a monthly saving of900 yuan for a taxi driver," said Qu, waiting in Thursday's midnight dark for the clock to turn zero.     The government distributed the news of the price cut via all major media and short messages to cell phone users on Thursday evening.     Nevertheless, there was no queuing-up at the gas station in the early morning hour. Consumers would benefit from it," said Xu Kunlin, another NDRC official.     Zhou Dadi, an energy researcher, said his calculation showed the factory gate fuel price would drop by 2,000 yuan per tonne and the pre-tax retail price would be down by 1.7 yuan per liter after the price cut.     A fuel trader said there might be a hoard purchase before the fuel taxation effective on Jan. 1 next year.     Bai Chongen, an economist from Tsinghua University, said the post-tax retail price would remain unchanged next year as fuel producers would lower the factory gate price again to offset the tax.     But for fuel producers, the price cut reduced their sales profit. "It will have a short-term impact on our profit, but we expect the global prices to rise in future. This will secure the long-term profit," said Shu Zhaoxia, a researcher with Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner.     Experts said the country's first fuel price cut in almost two years would help revitalize companies and factories eking out in a slowed-down economy.     Among industry beneficiaries, the aviation sector would see an immediate effect because the benchmark prices for jet fuel was slashed by a bigger margin of more than 30 percent, or 2,400 yuan, to 5,050 yuan per tonne.     An Air China spokesman said the cut would definitely boost the aviation industry as the drop was beyond airliners' expectation.     A Guojin Securities analyst said based on the forecast 2009 jet fuel consumption of 11.47 million tonnes, the price cut would lead to a cost reduction of 27.5 billion yuan for the country's aviation industry.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A food company in east China's Shandong Province has been allowed to resume export of bean stuffing to Japan following earlier suspicion of food poisoning, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said Friday.     In a brief statement posted on its Web site, the GAQSIQ said the Japanese authorities could not conclude that the food-poisoning symptoms of two Japanese people resulted from consumption of the bean stuffing from Qingdao Fushijia Food Co., Ltd. in Shandong.     According to the GAQSIQ, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare said Dec. 17 that Japan decided to lift import ban on Fushijia's products since the Chinese side had found no quality problem with Fushijia's bean stuffing. The Japanese side had also not discovered any harmful chemical substance in imported products.     Japan banned the import of Fushijia's bean stuffing in September after two employees of a Japanese food producer importing Fushijia's products became ill.

No dichlorvos were found in other packaged beans.     Informed of this case, China immediately contacted with the Japanese embassy to China to size up situation, China's quality inspection authorities immediately went to Yantai to conduct investigation in the company, and local governments also set up a special group to assist the investigation, according to Qin.     Now the investigation is well under way, he noted.     According to the current result of the tests, the company's production facilities were normal, all production records were in order, and no hidden trouble was found in quality or safety, Qin said.     The management of the company conformed to the standards, he noted.     Moreover, this batch of products exported to Japan had passed tests before exportation and no pesticide residue, such as the dichlorvos or methamidophos, was detected.     Qin said the Chinese quality inspection department Wednesday once again tested the retention samples of the exported beans and found no pesticide residues.     He said the Chinese side has reported the initial investigation results to the Japanese side and made arrangement for the officials with the Japanese embassy to visit Yantai on Thursday tofind out relevant situation.     Qin also disclosed some information provided by the Japanese side which said relevant Japanese organization only found residue of dichlorvos in one bag of beans but found no such pesticide residues in other products of the same batch.     He said he has noted that the Japanese police and media recently both believed there is little possibility that the beans were polluted during the producing process, and that the case might not be a food safety incident but a man-made poisoning case.     The Japanese police has placed the case on file for investigation, he added.     He stressed that the Chinese government is ready to keep close contacts and cooperation with the Japanese side to find out the truth as soon as possible.

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is in good shape despite the changing economic environment, and it will maintain stable and relatively fast growth, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) chief Ma Jiantang told Xinhua on Sunday.     "The fundamentals of China's economy remain unchanged despite the changing world economic environment," the new NBS director said. "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook."     The world's fastest economic growth rate, successful commodity price controls, increasing foreign exchange reserves and good employment rates were the factors to support the economic fundamentals, said Ma.     The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, eased to 4.6 percent in September from the same period last year. It hit a 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.9 percent in the first three quarters, 2.3 percentage points down from the same period last year.     The slowdown was a result of combined effects, including the global financial crisis, the world economic downturn and severe domestic natural disasters, Ma said.     However, he said, "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook." The country had rich resource reserves, great market potential, vigorous enterprises and the government had strong macro-control abilities.     The government had made a series of macro-economic policy adjustments against the changing economic environment, which would guarantee a steady and sound economic development, he said.
