BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator said Wednesday that China will promote social exchanges with Myanmar to boost bilateral ties.     "We attach importance to and support friendly exchanges and cooperation between social groups and organizations in China and Myanmar, which will contribute to the development of bilateral ties," said Zhou Tienong, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a meeting with a delegation from a government-supported organization from Myanmar.     Zhou, also president of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, briefed the eight-member delegation on China's political and economic situation, its measures in tackling the global downturn and pledged to boost economic and trade cooperation with the international community, including Myanmar. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) issued a statement late Monday saying it would approve U.S. automaker General Motors Co.'s (GM) plan to buy part of parts supplier Delphi Corp, but set conditions on the deal to avoid restricting competition.     The approval came after an anti-monopoly probe by the MOC into the deal last week and negotiations with the two companies over the deal conditions, aimed to avoid exclusion or restriction of competition, according to the statement.     The conditions include a ban on GM and Delphi exchanging trade secrets on Delphi's other Chinese customers, to prevent GM from getting confidential and competitive information.     Delphi should also maintain the timeliness and quality of supplies indiscriminately to the other domestic automakers, at market prices.     The ministry said it had discussed with the two companies its concerns on competition, and GM and Delphi had come up with solutions.     According to a Dow Jones report Monday night, authorities in the U.S. and E.U. had earlier given their approval for the deal, after Delphi, GM's former parts division, received approval from a U.S. court to sell assets to its lender and GM.     The report said this would clear the way for the auto-parts supplier, which operates 17 wholly-owned entities and joint ventures in China and 21 manufacturing sites, to end its four-year stay in bankruptcy.     Under China's anti-monopoly law, mergers and acquisitions that could impact the domestic market must undergo an anti-monopoly review.

BEIJING, Aug. 21 -- China Mobile Thursday reported its first drop in net profit since 1999 because of rising competition from rivals China Telecom and China Unicom and its weak 3G performance.    The world's biggest telco posted a net profit of 30.1 billion yuan (US.42 billion) in the second quarter, compared with 30.6 billion yuan a year ago.     Analysts had previously forecast a net profit of 31.4 billion yuan for the period.     "A macro-economic slowdown, a rising mobile communications penetration rate and changes in the competitive environment of the telecommunications industry in China have posed challenges to the development of the business in the first half," China Mobile said in a statement.     In the first six months, China Mobile posted a net profit of 55.3 billion yuan, a 1.4 percent annual growth. Its revenue totaled 212.9 billion yuan, an 8.9 percent rise from a year ago.     China Mobile's monthly average revenue per user, a key index of the industry to monitor a telco's profitability, was 75 yuan in the first half, about 10 percent less than a year ago.     China Mobile added 35.87 million users in the first half to total 493 million by the end of June. The telco had 957,000 3G users since it started a trial 3G service in April.     In the first half, China Mobile took 66 percent of the total new additional mobile users, compared with 85 percent a year ago, due to the "changed competitive landscape," the company said.     "The gap between China Mobile and other rivals will become narrow but it will still dominate the market for about two years," said Wu Wenzhao, a telecommunications analyst of Analysys International.     In January, China issued 3G licenses to China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Said Sunday that it signed a deal with Telefonica, the Spanish telecom operator, to enhance their alliance by spending 1 billion U.S. dollars each on share purchase.     China Unicom would acquire shares equal to about between 0.885 percent to 0.892 percent of stake in Telefonica, according to the company's statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     Telefonica would increase its stake in China Unicom from 5.38 percent to 8.06 percent, the statement said.     Their cooperation would focus on infrastructure and equipment purchase, mobile service platforms, research and development, and service provision to multinational clients, according to the deal.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A grand evening gala to celebrate New China's 60th founding anniversary started Thursday evening at the Tian'anmen Square when 60 birthday-candle-shaped fireworks exploded into the sky and lit up the vast square. Red, pink, white and orange fireworks shot up into the night sky, lighting up the Tian'anmen Rostrum and 56 giant decorative columns, which were set up on the square to represent China's 56 ethnic groups. Fireworks are seen in the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 1, 2009    That was the beginning of a 33-minute fireworks feast in the evening.
