BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor has called for seriously studying the essence of the third plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which is ushering in a new round of rural reforms in the country.     Great efforts should be made to push forward the rural reforms, so as to consolidate and develop the country's general situation featuring a stable and fast economic development and a harmonious and stable society, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.     Jia, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made a study tour in Jilin Province on Oct. 18-22 in the company of Jilin's Party chief Wang Min and Governor Han Changfu.     During his stay, he visited local factories, villages, schools, research institutions and construction sites, and heard reports by local officials to learn about the real situation in this northeastern province. ATHENS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that China hopes to push its ties with Greece to a higher level.     The Chinese government has attached great importance to its relations with Greece and has been viewing the bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, Hu said during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.     China hopes to expand the scope of shared interests with Greece and push forward bilateral cooperation in various sectors, the Chinese president said.     He suggested that the two sides set up a guideline for long-term economic cooperation and establish a more effective communication platform for enterprises on both sides. He had earlier attended a financial summit in Washington and paid state visits to Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru, where he also attended the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- China had "unprecedented dynamic interaction" with the rest of the world in 2008, receiving some 180 heads of state or government, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when addressing a new year reception in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan on Wednesday signed more than 10 deals ranging from trade and minerals to agriculture and satellites.     The package of agreements came out of a two-hour summit at Beijing's Great Hall of the People as China rolled out the red carpet for Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who is on his first state visit to the country since taking office in September. Zardari was welcomed by President Hu Jintao and received a 21-gun military salute at the Tian'anmen Square, festooned with the national flags of China and Pakistan.     During the meeting, Hu reviewed the close bilateral ties, particularly the days of the Bhutto family.     "Your entire family are old friends of the Chinese people," Hu told Zardari. "We will never forget the outstanding contribution Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had made to boosting ties with China." "China and Pakistan should vigorously boost border trade so as to bring more substantive benefits to their citizens."     Zardari said the two should carry out big projects and work more closely in infrastructure, transport, environmental protection and finance, among others.     The two leaders agreed to step up people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, health and journalism.     Hu thanked Pakistan for its support on issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet. He also appreciated Pakistani efforts in backing Beijing's hosting of the Olympic Games.     Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan's adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's peaceful reunification,     They also agreed on enhancing coordination and collaboration on international and regional issues, cooperating on addressing global challenges and ensuring peace, stability and development in the world.     As part of his four-day trip, Zardari is also scheduled to meet with other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and top advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged the promotion of stable agricultural and rural economic development and said issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers should continue to be the top priority of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday. Attendees at the meeting studied the means to promote agricultural modernization with Chinese characteristics.     Maintaining stable agricultural and rural economic development was more important under current circumstance, Hu said.     Agricultural production was the basic support to stimulate economic growth; rural areas had the potential to boost domestic demand; and to improve farmers' living standards was a major task and also a difficult job, he said.     He called for more efforts on three major tasks of agricultural work.     First, greater importance should be laid on ensuring the country's grain security and supplies of major agricultural products.     The country should stick to the most strict system to protect and save farming land as well as stabilize the grain sowing area, Hu said.     He said the government should increase subsidies for agricultural production and continue to raise the minimum state purchasing prices for grain.     In the latest move to protect farmers' interests and boost grain output, the National Development and Reform Commission said Saturday it would raise the minimum state purchasing prices for rice in major rice-producing areas by as much as 16.9 percent this year.     Hu also stressed the quality supervision and monitoring of agricultural products to ensure food safety.     Second, more importance should be attached to promote rural infrastructure construction as well as improve social welfare and living standard of farmers, he said.     He urged increasing capital input in infrastructure construction and rural social welfare and said greater efforts should be made to improve rural education, medical services and poverty alleviation.     Third, an array of measures should be taken to promote the growth of farmers' income and expand the rural market, Hu said.     He urged more efforts to discover new measures and channels to boost farmers' income and improve the commodity circulation network in rural areas.     The program of subsidized home appliance, autos and motorcycles should be promoted, he said.     He also urged quality authorities to make best efforts to protect farmers' interests and avoid fake and shabby products flowing in to rural markets.     Speaking of rural workers employment, Hu said governments should encourage enterprises to be more responsible and employ more rural workers.     The governments could also provide more job opportunities for rural workers by letting them work on the infrastructure projects amid the country's efforts to boost domestic demand, he said.     More support should be given to migrant workers who returned because of employment difficulty in cities and encourage them to start their own businesses, Hu said.     He also suggested Party leaders and governments at all levels should apply the scientific outlook on development to their work to deal with the emerging problems and challenges facing agricultural and rural economic development, and contribute more to promoting rural reform, development and stability.

The Shenzhen index was down 1.19 percent, or 70.33 points, to close at 5,839.33 points.     The combined turnover was 35.23 billion yuan (5.03 billion U.S.dollars), compared with 49.35 billion yuan on the previous trading day. Losses outnumbered gains by 656 to 199 in Shanghai and 576 to151 in Shenzhen.     Almost all sectors fell except industries related to aircraft making after the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. (CACC) announced Chinese indigenous regional jets would be sold to the United States, analysts said. CACC is not a publicly traded company.     Coal companies suffered the most losses. Kailuan Clean Coal Co.lost 7.21 percent to 10.3 yuan. Taiyuan Coal Gasification Company fell 4.34 percent to 7.50 yuan.     "I don't think the fall was related to recent mine accidents. It was a reflection of diminishing global energy demand," said Alex Xue, analyst with JL McGregor & Company.     The finance sector also dropped by an average of 3 percent. CITIC securities lost 2.46 percent to 17.84 yuan. Bank of Communications fell 4.20 percent to 4.33 yuan.     According to estimates from Friday's China Securities News, third-quarter profits of the country's 1,466 listed companies would fall 10.17 percent from the same period a year ago and 18.41 percent from the previous month to 206.09 billion yuan.     Operating net cash flow fell 51.75 percent to 827.4 billion yuan in the first three quarters. Analysts said rising material costs and weakening demand led to slumping profits.     The country's industrial output value growth slowed to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest rate since April 2002, the National Development and Reform Commission said on Thursday.     Despite the latest rate cut, which was viewed as helpful to stabilizing the stock market, analysts said the market could possibly continue falling. The long-term affects from the rate cut are yet to been seen.

BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Four U.S. ambassadors in Beijing on Sunday eyed a continued China policy under the Obama administration.     "I am optimistic that U.S-China ties will continue to improve and remain steady in the years ahead. In fact, they are getting better," former U.S. ambassador to China James Sasser told reporters on the sidelines of a reception marking the 30th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.     Sasser was one of about 200 personages from the two countries attending Sunday's reception, held in the U.S. new embassy in Beijing.     Sasser, who served as ambassador from 1996 to 1999, said he didn't see "significant tensions" in current bilateral relations and believed there would be more improvements in the years ahead.     Echoing Sasser's view, another former U.S. ambassador to Beijing Winston Lord said, "Overall, the American policy with China will remain essentially the same under the Obama administration."     "If you look at what Obama has been saying about U.S.-China relations, look at what type of people he has been appointing to key foreign policy positions, these suggest great continuity," said Lord, who was one-time aide to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and part of the U.S. delegation during Richard Nixon's ground-breaking visit to China in 1972.     "We had 7 presidents since President Nixon, both democratics and republicans. All of them have pursued essentially the same policy with respect to China," said Lord, who served as ambassador to China between 1985and 1989.     "It doesn't mean we won't have problems. But I think interests are much bigger than our problems," he said.     Stapleton Roy, who served as ambassador in Beijing from 1991 to 1996, said the Obama administration would continue to cooperate with China. "There are so many issues the two countries have to deal with in the world. The have to work together."     Looking to the future, Roy said the most serious issue the two countries have to deal with is the economic crisis. He called for the two countries to work more closely and take concerted actions.     "In 1979, who among us would have thought that 30 years later the United States and China would be meeting regularly on regional hot spots in third countries or they would be working together to deal with the world financial crisis," current U.S. Ambassador in Beijing Clark Randt told the reception.     As a metric of the development of bilateral relations, Randt said there were 36 Americans working in the U.S. embassy in Beijing in 1979.     "In October 2008, when we moved to this new building, we had a staff of 1,100, the second biggest U.S. embassy in the world," Randt said.     "The new embassy itself was a tangible expression to the importance of the development of U.S.-China relations, the most important bilateral relationship in the world."     As the world gets more complicated, Randt said interdependence and complementariness between the two countries would become even more important and the relationship would continue to get better.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A food company in east China's Shandong Province has been allowed to resume export of bean stuffing to Japan following earlier suspicion of food poisoning, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said Friday.     In a brief statement posted on its Web site, the GAQSIQ said the Japanese authorities could not conclude that the food-poisoning symptoms of two Japanese people resulted from consumption of the bean stuffing from Qingdao Fushijia Food Co., Ltd. in Shandong.     According to the GAQSIQ, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare said Dec. 17 that Japan decided to lift import ban on Fushijia's products since the Chinese side had found no quality problem with Fushijia's bean stuffing. The Japanese side had also not discovered any harmful chemical substance in imported products.     Japan banned the import of Fushijia's bean stuffing in September after two employees of a Japanese food producer importing Fushijia's products became ill.

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official called on the country's lawyers to serve their clients wholeheartedly and be a guard for the legal rights and interests of their clients, at Saturday's opening of the Seventh National Lawyers Congress.     The congress will last through October 27.     He urged Chinese lawyers to strictly abide by the principle of "making facts as the base and law as the yardstick" and follow their code of conduct and disciplines.     Lawyers "should take the safeguarding of social fairness and justice as the fundamental pursuit of value in their practice," said Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau and the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee (CPLAC).     Under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, China's lawyer system has been gradually improving, while the lawyers' number has kept on increasing and their role has become increasingly clear, according to the senior official.     Zhou urged Chinese lawyers to give top priority to the cause of the Party, the interests of the people, and the Constitution and law, and be an adamantine constructor and guard for socialism with China's own characteristics.     Chinese lawyers should become a promoter for social harmony, he said, noting that the All-China Lawyers Association (ACLA) should bring into full play of its role as a bridge and ligament between Chinese lawyers and the Party and the government.     Present at the opening session were Meng Jianzhu, minister of public security, state councilor and deputy secretary of the CPLAC, Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People's Court, and Cao Jianming, procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.     According to official website of the ACLA, the congress is its highest governing body.
